I was born and raised in Eureka. Lived there for 40 years. A couple of things you said that aren't true. The grass is not green year round. And people do have sprinklers. In the summer, it does not rain so most people's lawns turn brown. Normally people will have brown lawns and dandelions in the summer. If you see green lawns in the summer, it's because they have sprinklers. I know because that's what I did. Also, Eureka has been shrinking population wise. When I grew up it was around 30,000 people but now it's down to around 25 or 26,000 people. The reason is that the job market is not good there so people leave when the can. I know because that's what I did. I got out as soon as I was able. When I was a kid, Eureka was way nicer than it is now. Lots of lumber industry jobs and fishing jobs. The environmentalist took care of that. Now it's mostly a retirement/tourist town with service jobs that don't pay much. Also Eureka has one of the highest drug problems/ crimerates per capita in the state. Not a good place to try a raise a family. Used to be though.

Thank you for the nice review. I moved here in 1990 and absolutely love it. I, too, was thrilled to see all the steeples. You should see the inside of some of them! I lived in So. Cal. for 15 years after moving west from Massachusetts. Eureka HAS SIDEWALKS!!!! It is a pseudo New England with all the Victorians and love of things OLD! I still miss the train coming along First Street. Oh, and hearing helicopters.....that would be the Coast Guard at work! Was voted the "Small Town Art Community" in the US. Ocean, Bay, rivers, redwoods and lots of wildlife!
