Defend kizami Zuki (jab) different ways
You should have more than one way to defend Kizami Zuki, and one reason is not to let opponent read your patterns and make strategy.

Follow the breath not the hands & feet

When the attack is 2 techniques in one breath or one foot action, treat it as one action, follow the breath and not the external action.
Store energy (Tameru) & release for optimal power with least effort
Просмотров 56114 дней назад
In karate technique our goal is to use the whole body for maximum power with least effort, and at the same time not given space when we start technique and in the transition between techniques. Sensei Nishiyama used the word Tameru (saving) to refer to storing energy using the breath, inside muscles and interaction of feet, legs and torso with ground reaction, in the kamae (ready posture) and m...
Defending the hook punch

We have many techniques in kata that due to competition rules are ignored in training. Such as knees, elbows, Ura Zuki, Kage Zuki, Mawashi Zuki. A karate person should be able to defend any type of attack.

Form - what do we mean when we talk about form

Form - there are many aspects to form, such as precise line of energy, trajectory of technique, structure including stance, posture and technique itself & the inside condition of the body.
Counter attack fighting - make opponent attack on your terms

Opponent's attack is your chance if you know how to use the space that is being created within the attack. But it is more optimal if you can dictate when opponent attacks, put pressure to make opponent track on your term.
Coaching Sen (intercept) key points

Sen (intercept, being ahead) timing is the base of Oji Waza (response timing). Here I coach Philip with most basic concepts, such as breath reaction, foot first.

Feet initiate techniques using external force, creating chain reaction from the ground up. At the same time your feet control the distance of your technique, when you punch do not think of your fist reaching the target, rather understand where the feet should be for proper distance of each technique. Here is a simple drill to develop the feet adjusting to distance, while still coordinating feet...
Don't choose "style" over "principles" & function.
Просмотров 958Месяц назад
Kata & kumite are the same as far as principles, of course the form in kumite is adaptable & flexible, yet principles should not be violated. Kata & kumite are same, the kata was created for kumite, therefore adhere to combat principles when doing kata.

Examples of using Fumi Ashi (step) in Kumite
Просмотров 608Месяц назад
Fumi Ashi (step) is very common in the kata, but not used as much in Kumite. One explanation is that the kata was designed for fighting against weapon mostly, which requires covering more distance. But there are many scenarios which Fumi Ashi can be used in Kumite.
Kata according to one's skill level
Просмотров 660Месяц назад
As a beginner certain actions in kata are exaggerated, in order to help develop specific skills, such as connecting body center to elbow, or learn to internally load the body center. As those skills are acquired, kata can be adjusted, extra actions can be removed. Yet when teaching the kata, teach the original way.

Yes, you can do the beginning of heian yondan with fast expansion/contraction like heian nidan. The reason we do it slow is to understand the coordination, interaction of breath, ground reaction, muscle action and dynamics. It is done slow, for developing the ability to do it fast with same coordination.

Dear Mr. Avi Rokah. Yes very important movements. Just a minute explanation is missing, namely to explain the difference what comes first body or leg. The first part is about defencše and in defensive action the centre of the body movess first and the legs jus folloew. THe second part was about using sidestep or pivotin as paert o an attacking action. In that case the legs come first and body follow. Best regards. Paul, ret. instructor.

**Kyo Jitsu** - “The art of combat lies in striking when your opponent is vulnerable and evading when they are strong.” Our body, mind, energy, and reflexes work in harmony to shape our perception. The true mastery of this art involves deceiving an opponent's perception. Imagine a fighter moving effortlessly, appearing as if they’re merely strolling. Their muscles are relaxed, and the energy they exude suggests they are unprepared to engage. In this moment of feigned vulnerability, they are subtly luring their opponent into a trap, while their adversary waits for the slightest indication of an impending attack. The essence of Kyo Jitsu is to manipulate this dynamic, turning the tables in an exhilarating dance of strategy and instinct.

Hi Sensei Rokah, beautiful video! But what is the difference between hiraki ashi and ashi sabaki/tai sabaki? I ask this because I have not been able to find in the terminology of Kendo, Aikido, or Judo the specific type of movement you described which is very common in Karate, that is, moving to the closed side of the opponent, or from the side of our back foot without changing Kamae. Many of the Taisabaki refer to the classic pivots on the front support leg, or if it is the rear support leg that makes the pivot and takes the angle mentioned, this happens by changing Kamae afterwards. Only "Kaiten" tai sabaki seems similar. Let me explain better, I have Kamae with my left leg in front and my opponent in front of me also has kamae with his left leg in front and attacks with a kizami tsuki. One possibility would be for me, in defending myself from his Kizami tsuki, to move to my right, moving first the right foot and then the left which however always remains frontal, and my Kamae always facing towards him, therefore rotating my torso in his direction . So, starting with the left leg in front, my feet described a semicircle in an anti-clockwise direction, instead of clockwise as in the classic pivot, without then changing Kamae, or guard side. Is this passage hikiri ashi? While pivoting is Tai Sabaki? Or is this Kaiten Tai Sabaki? Thanks!!!!

    • @avirokah9294
      @avirokah9294 Месяц назад

Thank you for great question, Tai Sabaki is a general term for body shifting. Hiraki Ashi (to open foot) & Mawashi Ashi (foot circle, pivoting) are part of Tai Sabaki (body shifting) or Unsoku (footwork). I will make a video explaining the difference between Mawashi Ashi and Hiraki Ashi).
