NFL AFC Playoff Race - 2024/25 Week 11 - Dolphins and Patriots refuse to go away
Analysis of the NFL AFC playoff picture focusing on advantages teams have in tiebreaker records and the nuances of the remaining schedule. Mathematical odds, win targets, way too much nerdy data, and an occasional attempt at humor, but no bias for or against the supposed “good” and “bad” teams other than what the actual results show.

Thanks for the video
It looks like you have put a lot of effort into this video. It deserves more views. I thought it was very succinct. I'm from New Zealand so i don't know too much about American Football. But i do know we are coming to the business end of the competition. This video is very helpful for someone like me. The trouble is i don't know what team to support. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the kind words. That depends if you like chaos, the villian, or the feel good story to root for. The Detroit Lions, and maybe the Cleveland Browns are the feel good stories of the year as they have been so bad for so long. The Atlanta Falcons' head coach is the villian of the year for his utter disdain for a large group of people that make up the NFL's revenue. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be contenders for chaos as you never know what you are going to get from those teams.
@PlayoffComputer I'm leaning towards the Detroit Lions as I know they have not had much success in the past, and the city is one of the poorest in the states I believe. I would also like to see the Bengals do well as they had high hopes last year. Who are you rooting for?
@@stevenbissett The Lions would be a good one to root for as their head coach seems like a decent dude (last week's whining notwithstanding). I don't have any favorites, just like the drama, although I have a soft spot for the underdogs (Texans, Colts, Vikings, etc..)
best
For your Intra-Conference Games slide, regarding NYJ versus MIA, I'm guessing that regarding other teams favoring MIA to win, you are considering something like tie-breakers, but for some reason discounting that - given that MIA has not yet clinched a playoff spot, and that it is far more likely MIA will miss a wildcard spot (say, in the case the Bills win their division) than that the Jets will secure one, and that the wildcard race is red-hot............... *every AFC team* except for MIA is actually rooting for the Jets this week, and would continue to favor NYJ winning over MIA each week (if they had to choose one each week, hypothetically), until such time as NYJ became more - or equally - competitive than MIA for a wildcard spot, which is unlikely to happen *at any point*. This isn't even taking into account playoff *Seeding*, for which, every team that can hope to win a division - out of the ones you listed as rooting for MIA, that's realistically DEN, CLE(?) - are certainly rooting against their potential *seeding opponent* in whoever is leading another division, which currently includes MIA! Even more absurd is any other AFC team being helped more by KCC over NEP this week... NEP is eliminated from playoff contention. How is any team helped by KCC winning over NEP - in terms of playoff contention, or seeding?
Last question first, I believe the audio had cut out by then, but I had said basically yeah it likely doesn't matter. The program, when things get this late into the season and with these games that involve teams that are clinched or eliminated it looks at each possible outcome, if one helps a team out it lists it, if it really doesn't matter it just chooses the first outcome. But because it does figure things like tiebreakers it becomes impossible to know whether out of the billion scenarios whether it picked an outcome because it really mattered or not. But even though it seems unlikely that anyone is helped by KC winning over NE, it cannot be ruled out as KC getting in may make it easier for someone to win a tiebreaker e.g. wins a two team tiebreaker against another team that they would have lost had it been a three team tiebreaker including KC. Probably a related answer to NYJ-MIA, the program doesn't concern itself with seeds or even division winners for that part, just whether which outcome betwen NYJ-MIA improves their odds to make the playoffs. And tiebreakers, especially, this year, will play a big part of that. And the difference between one outcome over another might be 0.0000001% or something ridiculous to a point that, again, it likely doesn't matter, but again, there is no way (easily) to disprove what the program spits out on these. I thank you for staying to the end of these poorly produced productions!
@@PlayoffComputer Thanks for responding, and sorry to be argumentative. You say, "the program doesn't concern itself with seeds or even division winners... just whether which outcome... improves their odds to make the playoffs." But if that's the case, then again the KCC-NEP is blatantly incorrect; every AFC team that is not yet eliminated or clinched is competing for a spot with every other AFC team that is not yet eliminated or clinched - and is NOT competing with teams that have been eliminated. Every AFC team other than KCC (and probably including NEP for draft reasons) is helped more by an NEP win than a KCC win. Period.
That would be incorrect. Take JAC for example. One of the many many scenarios that "could" happen is that JAC doesn't win the AFC South but ends up competing for the last wildcard (possibly unlikely, but it could happen). Of the many many scenarios that exist where JAC is competing for the last wildcard, there are some scenarios in which KC wins the AFC West and a few in which DEN wins the AFC West, and the other ends up being the team that competes with JAC for the wildcard. KC beat JAC, JAC probably would win the tiebreaker over DEN. So it most definitely is in JAC's best interest that KC wins the AFC West and that they don't have to worry about competing against KC for a wildcard spot (again, seeding is another can of worms, this is just for getting into the playoff), and a KC win over NEP erases one or a couple scenarios from the board in which JAC doesn't make the playoffs because of them, while a NEP victory over KC only opens the door wider for some of these wacky scenarios to happen and leave JAC with their pants undone. Hope that was clearer than mud.
...FWIW I took the time using the ESPN playoff machine to verify this. With MIA/BAL/HOU winning divisions, CLE & BUF at 10-6 taking the first two wildcard spots, JAC at 10-7 tied with one of the AFC West teams, all others at 9-8 or worse, and it 100% mattered which AFC West team they were tied with. A KC win makes it more unlikely than it already is that JAC would end up tied for them for the last wildcard spot and missing the playoffs.
Right, let's take for granted that either KCC or DEN will win their division. I understand how JAX can prefer one over the other - namely the one against whom their tiebreakers are worse (in case the non-division winner is in wildcard contention with the same record as JAX). However, I still feel it is more or less silly to suggest at this stage that an AFC team would be rooting for another team with a record close to theirs - especially JAX and KCC, two current division leaders - over an eliminated team, because seeding *is* a critical consideration for teams planning to make the playoffs. While JAX is not guaranteed in yet, HOU (with Stroud injured) and IND (who aren't actually good and have benefited from a soft schedule until their wake-up call last week) are running out of time to pull ahead. Most importantly, nor is DEN remotely guaranteed to be in Wildcard contention. Thus, again... seeding. It's kind of silly imo to frame the question of "which teams prefer which outcome" when imposing an artificial extra condition such as "ignoring seeding considerations", which division leaders tend to care about greatly at this stage. Ask Dallas, Miami, Baltimore, San Francisco, KCC, Philadelphia, and especially Detroit.
Audio cut out at the 13 minute mark for some reason. Thus, the last segment is read-only.
This is awesome!!
Thanks!
is there a way to split up the wildcard playoff spots by division? i have 2 divisions and both get 2 wildcards each
Unfortunately to fix other issues I had to remove the abilitiy to do what you are asking. You basically have to treat it as two separate leagues.
This app is awesome! Great job!
Thank you for the kind words.
There are never too many puns in one sentence. Also enjoying the statistical projections to fill the middle of my week that is so desperately lacking in football.
Thank you, appreciated! Yeah I don't know what is worse, the time between MNF and TNF or the time between TNF and Sunday.
This app is great! Thank you for all your efforts and hard work! Really hoping that RTSports will soon allow you the access you need to import league data.
At this point, if you are a customer of RTS, it may be more helpful to ask them to contact me as I've not heard back from them after repeated attempts.
@@PlayoffComputer I mentioned it to them in their discord and this was the response from Christopher, he's an admin on there "We'll check them out. There's literally hundreds of little sites out there that have add-ons like this, so it's hard to keep up with them all. They'd just need a key to get access to our api though."
@@just-baseball Thanks for the attempt.
