I ride bikes, and talk about riding bikes....mainly adventure bikes - but I also have a few classic 2 stroke triples thrown in, and the odd trail-ride now and again. And once in a blue moon I say something vaguely useful :)
Flinders Ranges, Birdsville and Cameron Corner Trip 2024 Part Seven. Moralana Scenic Drive :)
Join us on an epic 15-day 6,000 km adventure as we ride our adventure bikes from Brisbane to Birdsville, tackling the famous Big Red sand dune (and a dozen dunes to do 1% of the 1190 dunes of a full crossing) before Phil heads back to Brisbane. With Neil and me continuing south through to the stunning Flinders and rugged Gammon Ranges - we take on as many dirt roads as we can find, exploring iconic Australian outback locations.
From camping to navigating the remote trails around Cameron Corner, this journey is filled with unforgettable moments, breathtaking landscapes, and the true spirit of adventure riding.

@@Phl_b two dives, lol....
have you got a power plate on your bike?
@@itscraigg72 yep, I carry a couple of spare prefilters for a 6,000km trip in a ziplock bag. Works well.
Yeeaaahhhh boooiiiiiss! So cool to re-live the action 👌
@@Phl_b it'll be a couple of weeks for the next one...away riding the high country :)
Glad to see that mono shot made it in mate 😉
Can I ask what tyres the three of you are running?
@@Skuffy1969 we all run tubed Pirelli Scorpion Rally fronts and for a 6,000km ride tubed 140/80 Motoz Tractionator Adventure rears (when we can get them) and Motoz Rallz rears for shorter rides. Cheers
@@890RallyAdventureR Thank you.
id rather have hemorrhoids than do that trip on a bike--- how uncomfortable---no thanks, thats what 4wds are for lol
I didn't even vaguely get a sore butt...and in places we went where no 4wd could go - that's all part of the beauty of outback Australia - and what makes adventure riding suit some people and 4wd's suit others....it's all good either way. Main thing is to get out there and enjoy what we have, eh, no matter how :) Thanks for watching and commenting
Cool trip any chance I can pinch the GPX FILE FROM YOU ??
Thanks - we only have a file for the bit Neil mapped out from Aratula to Windorah if that is the part you want? After that you could draw our route on a single piece of paper (spoiler alert)...head from Windorah to Birdsville (out to Big Red while there) then down the Birdsville track to the Flinders Ranges, then cruise up to Arkaroola, then we blatt up to Cameron Corner, and then we head home via the one ton post. Cheers
@@890RallyAdventureR yeah mate anything would be a great help.. thanks
I'm glad that the camera was off for the accident. I wouldn't want to see that.
It is possible to restart , sometimes.
Hey sonny! What you call flamed out, has been a stalled engine for more than a century. Generally a result of an incompetent driver. Though it can happen simply due to a handling mistake. Flamed out is an air force term which affects jets.😅
Stalling and flaming out are to different things , it’s common in the world of motocross , not stalling but flaming out
Cool cool....I didn't see, or hear, or notice the actual incident in fact - as I was headed over to a Unimog a couple of mates had had an issue with to see if they needed a hand. When I saw all the commotion and the damaged vehicle I started recording again. At one point the commentator with the microphone talked to the driver who was the one who said 'it flamed out' (not me). So I'm just telling ya what I heard and saw, and the end result of whatever it was :) Cheers
George is the biggest con artist around. Do not trust or believe a word he says. Nothing will be in his name. There is always a fall guy...

Some cool riding there mate 👌
For sure - good times to be had in many parts of this great big country eh

Yep - great to get out and about in this big country of ours eh :) Cheers
Such a good video is this. Ive never seen anything like this before. Can you do some more with different bikes please
@@peterbennpan7288 I'd love to...but only KTM will let me ride their bikes off-road, sorry
Nice tracks indeed, thanks for sharing. Does Neil use DMD2 to create the GPX files? I've used Gaia, which is ok, but DMD2 seems specific to dirt-oriented adventure riding (or so the website indicates). Ride safe, cheers.
I use dmd2 and find it a great tool.
@@roam5984 hi...we didnt have a route file sorry (or I'd have seen the turnoff, lol). Neil works out where we are going using Hema maps, and we are supposed to wait at any turn off and re-group. For trips we have a route it's created in Garmin explore (I think). Hope this helps, cheers
@@890RallyAdventureR Very helpful, thank you.
@@roam5984 cheers, hope you can find the roads we rode on, they're great!
Such a good ride!
@@Phl_b yup :)
Sorry Id rather listen to the instructions to change the clutch instead of your adventures
I've included putting them back together correctly in most of my bike reviews...the only tricky part is the last plate is offset from the rest to make the slipper clutch work correctly. The rest only goes in one way. Cheers
Yeeaaahhhh boooiiiii 👌👌
Thought you'd enjoy this one mate :)
Haha that cam comment! Brace brace 😂
Lol....yup
Man that bike sounds sweet. Are you running the Akro and cat delete ? Also what tyres are you running? I've dented the $hit out my standard 890R front wheel all ready and am planning to go the DirtStar rally rims. Cheers for sharing 🍻🍻
@@glennaltschwager5234 Hi, I still have my cat, just have a Delkevic pipe with the baffle removed, so it sounds good but the bike still runs well. Yeah my original rims were badly dented, I run the Pirelli Scorpion Rally Desert Race 90/90-21 tube type...great tyres. Cheers
Just FYI re cat delete - Phil tried it all, including different maps for his ecu and he could never get his bike to run as well as mine...and his fuel economy suffered badly! (He switched back to a cat, and now his bike goes better and his fuel economy is back). Cheers
@890RallyAdventureR thanks mate, the feed back is greatly appreciated. Do you run a heat shield to protect the rear shock from the cat heat?
Looks like a fun route. Can I ask what size tyres you’re running on the narrower rims? Thanks in advance. 👍🏻
Hi - yeah it's a fun route - I run the Rallz 140/80-18 rear which is slightly taller than a 150/70 and gives a nicer sidewall height with more squish for off-road at lower pressures, keeping the rim up 6 or so mm higher (re rocks). 90/90 Scorpion Rally Race front. Tube types both ends obviously. Cheers
@@890RallyAdventureR Great thanks for that.
63 is the new 53. Keep riding.
Pre 6 am getting up for the ride I felt every one of those 63 years, but - once I hit the dirt I feel decades younger...love it!
Great to here! I just bought a 790 a month ago and absolutely love the bike. I bought it despite all ive heard about the problems. It just checked all the boxes for me that other bikes like the T7 didnt. Im thinking cat delete to have the bike run cooler and not put so much heat on that rear shock. Have you done that mod on your 890?
Nice one...glad to hear that re getting a 790....the T7's are a bit flat feeling and top heavy by comparison eh. I've only heard of people having problems with rear shocks in the early part of ownership, and personally run the cats on both bikes (since they run better with them installed) and have much more open exhausts, which seems a good compromise to keep the computer happy but still sound fun :) Enjoy :)
Bloody Hell what a cluster fuk! You must be a patient man! 😉👍🏼
Great channel mate! Just about to get back into the dirt after around 10 years away. I'm looking at 2nd hand 790's with around 20k on them.....I've heard that the cams are a worry on these....?
Great bikes....I'm doing a ride on my old 790 this weekend actually. It has 45,000km on it, my 890 has 36,500 on it - between both of them only one shim has had to be changed to make one valve clearance correct....you can't get much better than that in my opinion! Of course if you've seen my videos I do have oiled pre-filters from Rotweiler on both bikes, and oiled Twin Air filters with two different foam elements, and I am pedantic about maintaining them on rides, and between rides. Grab one - they're awesome bikes!
Going too fast boys
Phil on that one corner? Yep. The rest I'm just sitting cruising along filming. I think the camera angle makes it look a bit faster since I sit low and slouch.
Very nice ride Mate!
Glad you enjoyed it :)
All these roads a well graded now, unlike a few years back. How are the cams on the 890?
The roads change season to season, yep. My bike had it's major 32,000km service a couple of thousand ks ago, only 1 valve needed a shim change, and all looked good in there. My 790 has 45,000k and no dramas either. Good air filters and maintenance and they're no drama.
How many KMs on the 890? Are they as unreliable as the internet says?
36,500 on the 890, 44,000 on my 790...I get them serviced every 15,000km and change the oil and filter in between at 7,500km (Motorex). Out of both bikes only 1 shim has ever been changed...super reliable as long as you are meticulous with pre-filters and air filters (see my post Flinders video to see how clean they stay). Biggest issue is keeping bugs out of my teeth from grinning!
Stupid mistake - rookie error! We were hustling though☝️
It happens to us all...good pace, for sure :)
You took a wallop from the standing position onto concrete and rocks! Shook it off like a 20 year old. Tough bugger!
Nice ride video mate👍 Is that the Puig clip on screen or th KTM powerparts one. I just picked up a new 890R this week and I'm looking to go that way with the screen. Cheers for sharing🍻🍻
Ta mate, that clip on is just the cheap $23 ebay ones. I drill an extra hole and lower the plastic deflector, and paint it black. Works well. Enjoy the 890 :)
@890RallyAdventureR thanks for the reply. So you drill a hole in the clip on screen to make it lower? Where the screen clips onto your 890 screen, do you do anything special or just clip on as intended. I like the way it looks sturdy as in all your ride videos.
@@glennaltschwager5234 yes, I lower the clipon...it's there to get the airflow a bit more laminar (pushes nice clean air above my peak). I'm short and have the low seat...taller riders struggle more than me (the only 'benefit' of being short on a tall bike, lol).
@890RallyAdventureR yeah mate, I'm hearing ya. I'm a short arse as well. I would struggle with the extra height of the rally. I got the 890R at a pretty good price, so I'm considering the cone valve suspension and tractive shock but in the 240mm version.
@890RallyAdventureR another question mate. Those mirrors you run, what brand are they? I've run the double takes before and don't really like how bulky they are. The ones you run look good and don't seem to flop around like some I've seen.
It’s a KTM mate , you’re lucky it lasted that long.
my 790R is still on it's original clutch at nearly 50,000km....and since then I've done the Simpson desert, Fraser Island twice and two Flinders trips - still nothing but smiles and wheelies :)
@@890RallyAdventureR my 2019 with 9000 kms or 5592 miles clutch just burned to the ground. apparently there is a jet that oils the clutch for cooling that might be restricted but the guy at my local ktm says there is no jet 🤷🏻♂ it is a 3mm hole some people change it for a .5 mm but i cant even find the jet online i just purchased a new clutch but this might happen again if this jet oil flow is actually restricted.
@@robertomariscal hi, yes there is a jet you can unscrew in the middle of the clutch basket (with a perfect screwdriver, it is loctited in!). Some people's jet has blocked...it will cause problems. At major services they check them. Good luck...please use the right screwdriver
@@890RallyAdventureR Yep I saw the jet did not use a perfect screw driver and couldn't remove it. It is a bit stripped now😲 the ktm mechanic insists there is no jet lol. I dont have an impact driver and the area is to small for a propper fitting one since it is threadlocked in, a smaller one wont do the job so not sure how to remove it to inspect or change it.
@@robertomariscal I assure you there is a jet there....removing it may take a little heat from a heatgun to loosen the loctite now maybe....(but before that I'd buy a new one and get the perfect bit, and replace it with the undamaged one just to be pedantic)...may the force be with you!
I like your way of thinking
Seemed to make sense at the time....needs a real engineer to do it for real though :)
Thank you, your content is still current. I appreciated you showing the SIDI failure point. Would be good to see you do a follow up. EDIT: ruclips.net/video/dP2Ugw1Ep3E/видео.html found it.
Hi, thanks....yes they didn't hold up terribly well eh...but did get a lot of use (unlike my new boots that I haven't really tried in anger yet). Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for sharing another great video. I have added The Green to my New England itinerary. I was wondering though, what is the make/model of Neil's helmet?
Hi, yes - The Green is worth the ride :) Neil's new lid is the Klim Krios Pro, the newest Klim carbon fibre enduro helmet, very nice...an updated version.
I've almost been waiting for my clutch to go out, so i have an excuse to put in a ceramic bearing shift kit. Lol
Hi, yeah I hear ya...I've seen those kits...mine shifts smooth as butter (much nicer than my 790) so I'm not sure I need to do it. Let me know if you do it :)
What was the police saying there?
Telling us we were going too fast...10kph speed limit there...we might have been a little faster than that just to stay upright, but not much faster...
Would you have any idea where the White Swamp Cemetery Koreelah is? I have grand relatives there and plan to visit the area soon.
Hi, I've seen the sign for Koreelah as we went past - so it's definitely the right area....and a quick google showed the cemetery not far off our usual path through there (White Swamp Rd), so I'd say you should be able to find the cemetery easy enough if you save the exact point to your chosen GPS (before you lose cell signal in there), cheers...
Thanks so much for replying. After doing lots of research I now know the exact location.
The older model and Italian made Alpinestar boots were brilliant and last for years. My last pair of Alpine tech 7 boots ( not italian made) were stuffed in 6 months, trail riding every weekend. I have changed over to Gaerne boots. They are still made in Italy. Showing wear after 2 years but still going strong, with every weekend trail riding and also adventure riding thrown in. It'll be interesting to see how your drystar Alpines last. Cheers for sharing 🍻
Thanks, yes Neil got the Gaernes and rates them...my drystars are currently drying out, lol...so I'm not super confident they will be waterproof eh (made in Thailand, it seems) Cheers
Never get tired of watching this stuff. Has Spirabo Forest Way been graded the entire length? When we rode it last Xmas the southern and middle sections were quite stoney and eroded in some places.
Hi, yes we just did this again a couple of weekends ago...and once up and past the lookout the track has been smoothed and widened - I'm guessing in preparation of fire season. Once at the next intersection both directions are so good you could paint a white line down the middle and call it state highway 1!
Can never be too sure about comms in a remote ride - point well made☝️ What a great ride though, loved that day👌😍
Yep, for sure...great riding in that part of the country, eh?
When you turned the screw counterclockwise did you turn it as far as it would go?
Hi, no just to take up the slack, then tightened it. If you do it as far as it will go your clutch will be disengaged....you won't be able to get any slack.
i just burnt mine up at 11.5k miles dragging a 800 lb elk a quarter mile down a gravel road now im here to learn how to replace it lol
Worth it for the Elk meat I reckon! Now I try to just dump the clutch and let the back tyre bear the traction issue (where possible) but I'm guessing you'd be wheelstanding with an 800lb Elk tied to the bike lol. Enjoy :)
Such great riding, good to watch it back over again - except for seeing that hideous top box on my bike! :-0
You and me both!
'Bugger'! :-P
It happens....that's part of the adventure :)
Mate, what tyres do you use on these trips?
I have the skinnier Haan wheels with tubes, run the Pirelli Scorpion Rally front, Motoz Rallz 140/80 rear, both around 28psi for this trip. Great grip, and both ends are well matched.
@890RallyAdventureR Thanks for the reply mate, I use same wheels. What kinda mileage you get from the rear?
Nice...I just did a 3 day 2 night gentle tear down to camp the last few nights in the high country before it gets too hot, and took it fairly easy (but not nursing the tyres like I do the Tractionator Adventures on a 6,000km Flinders trip)....and the rear has another 2 day overnighter left in it then it'll be toast. I ride on TC3 mostly and was trying not to skid too much, but still have fun. I barely got 3 days out of them on the KTM Rallye last year...but that was being fairly aggressive with them lairing up with my mate on my old 790R.....cheers
@890RallyAdventureR thanks again mate. Not sure that setup will cut it. I have 1k kms on tarmac to the Ferry in France then 4k km off road in the Sahara then 1k kms back home again. I was gonna put a E09 Dakar or the new Mitas Enduro Trail XT+ Dakar, no idea about the longevity of those, however if they have the same compound as the E07 I should be okay. It's all a bit of crap shoot to be honest, I did it last year on a 1290 SAR with Tractionator Adventure and they had another 3k kms in them but the gravel stability from the Dual Venture front was sketchy at best. Not another tyre thread 🤪. Thinking out loud. Take care and thanks again.
@@cummomoto for my Flinders ride the Tractionator is my pick. Enjoy :)
Enjoying the series👍🏻👍🏻 I got back from Innamincka 3 wks ago...not sure when you guys were there but the Cooper Creek crossing was pretty well empty.

Hahahah UFO sighting! 🤣🤣 Such an enjoyable ride - a new favourite ADV riding region!
It really is! Great variety down there eh...
Thanks for this real long term review my friend! Really interesting. Long live the bike! I had a coulple of your country fellows over her in Scandinavia last month and one of them, Steve, He joined me and our frien Thomas to Latvia in Balticum for a ADV Festival. That was awesome, ride all the way thru Asia to get a coffee in the woods 😂💪🤠🔥🙌, Cool guys!
I get jealous when I hear about the interesting countries that you Europeans (and visitors from here) can visit! Thanks, yes I'm slowing down the rides here this time of year - it starts to get too hot to camp! Cheers
I gather from your video and comments there were no hard facing wearing issues on the cams?
Hi, yes no problems at all...I asked for a photo of them if they were anything but shiny, and asked the tech and he said they'd settled in well and he didn't expect them to need any further adjustment from here on out - they only barely went down the minimum size so he did them because he was in there. He also noted the clean intake and said that I obviously did my filters as needed. (I have several videos on both the filter and pre-filter I use to keep inside there clean, and on a recent one inside it after a 6,000km Flinders trip). Cheers
Thanks for the reply
great review, thank you for making it - I just ordered these on an Amazon Prime Day deal. I’ve been contemplating between the RhinoWalk and these but ultimately chose these because they land squarely between the 24 and 48 liter size that RhinoWalk offers. For my needs, 36 liters is perfect and exactly what I was looking for. great video!!
The size and durability match the price point well, eh. Cheers
