Pletnev is definitely one of the giants of the piano and a prominent icon for music-making in the 20th century. The work performed here is really versatile and does not obey a certain point of view or interpretation. Hence, highly subjective performances are available in the library of Chopin through studio recordings or live events. but here we almost got some inconsistency and mannerism in most of the numbers, but after all, it is Pletnev on the stage..Bravissimo maestro

A very truthful interpretation but without too much fascination. Better: Jörg Demus 1976, Nelson Freire 1983, Claudio Arrau 1966. If you want something in the _"true to the text"_ school, try Perahia New York 1986. Avoid the psychotic frenzy of Trifonov 2023, this here is much better.

A great pianist is a great pianist! His impeccable technique says it all. But he chose to focus on a repertoire later that speaks to him. And we have all to gain from it.

Even with regards to some musical works, which might appear technically less complex and therefore solvable compared to others, such as this Mozart Fantasia, as usual the great Pogorelélic offers a great interpretation. I can't understand how some people can question this.

Ein Klangbett von Daniil Trifonov bereitet, wie es sich ein Sänger wie der wundervolle Matthias Goerne nur wünschen kann. Auch wenn Daniil kein Deutsch spricht, er kennt und erfasst die Texte ganz genau. Zwei ebenbürtige Partner die mir grosse Freude bereiten. 💐💐 Ein Dankeschön an Maestro Corner !
Ein Dankeschün auch DIR, Elisabeth; für diesen iebevollen Kommentar - dem Sänger und Pianist aber voll gerecht werden. Die Auffühhrung übetrifft ganze Historien der Darbietung dieses Hauptwerks deutscher Romantik bei weitem an Elan und Feisinn, vor allem Daniil Trifonov spielt diese Liedr in bisher nie gehörte Ausdrucksweiten. Er lässt die Rolle eines Begleiters weit hinter sich: So wie Heinrich Heine und Robert Schumann bildet er mit Matthias Goerne eine ungeahnte künstlerische Einheit. - Herzlichen Gruß in die Schwyz - W.

Pogorelich is perhaps the one great pianist with a not-so-reliable memory. He always had this trait - even in his 20s. Richter also used the score in classical works but I'm sure this was an idiosyncrasy rather than a practical safety net.
Not exactly. There are several video/films on RUclips of the the young Pogp performing difficult solo works from memory - and at a more rapid tempo, as well as video/films of him during that early period performing piano concertos, all without a score.

Pogo is practically the only pianist alive today who plays in the 19th century tradition of personally interpreting each piece.
I think Sokolov, Volodos, Pletnev, Vladimir Viardo, and the late, great Fuzjko Hemming belong in that conversation. Of the younger generation, I'm partial to Andrey Ponochevny, Vadym Kholodenko, and Evgeni Bozhanov.

Actually, it's beyond YOU. It was standard practice for piano recitalists to perform with the score until Liszt came along and played in public from memory.
@excelsior999 nothing to do with playing from the score, the interpretation is ridiculous. No one cares if a pianist plays from the score, I played this piece as a ten year old. It is an elementary piece, but he plays like a madman.

There are very beautiful moments, and there are very ugly and bizarre moments. Well, thats Pogo now, there is a reason he plays only in obscure places, and that's unfortunate given how extraordinary he was.

I would have preferred Steven Isserlis to play the second cello part in Schubert. I don't know this guy Blendulf, but I find the faces he makes quite stupid, and also the way he tries to get the other musicians to agree. Someone should tell this guy that there is only one Mr. Bean.

I really don't understand why they play diminuendo in the final note of the quintet. I can well imagine who came up with that idea. 🙄 There is no autograph of D.956 and it's true that in some cases Schubert wrote the accents so large that it was difficult to understand if he intended an accent or a diminuendo, but it is completely absurd to include it in the final note. Nobody plays it like that.
