Thanks so much for this favorite online classes. you are the best teacher
Your videos are very helpful. I’m trying to decide between a raspberry pi 5 and the N100. Are you going to do a comparison video between the two? Just from watching the individual videos you have on both devices it seems as though the N100 runs things like N64 and Game Cube games better. Would you agree?
Thank you! The n100 is certainly more capable and out of the box comes more complete. N64 and especially GameCube are much better on the n100. N100 is less work overall to build a finished console. You can save a little bit of money with a raspberry pi 5 setup but it's not much. What the Pi has going for it is it's a project (if you're into that kind of thing). You have to put it all together, find or build a case, and make it your own. If you're looking for even more power, at about twice the price of an n100 the Beelink SER 5 pro/max are really good. They are an AMD chip and will get you into PS3 and Xbox 360 if that's your thing.
I want to get started with a Pi5 and use is for mediacenter and retro gaming, is it wise to put in a M2 drive or is the sd drive where the OS lives enough
Can we talk about the roms and bios on pv? Thanks a lot for the video. Makes my life way easier
straight to the point, appreciate this! thank you.
makes me wonder if overclocking the pi5 can nudge it to playable framerates on wii and gamecube , what about ps2 ?
No bios updates, no support whatsoever, but yeah cheap price. not very reliable seller, but really cool hardware, too bad its just another hardware pusher. without the support with bugfixes and bios updates, it's not worth it in the long run. also does not support low idle power draw.
what about LaunchBox that what i use.
My complements on the whole aesthetic of everything you've got going on there. Cheers.
I dropped in on the list for that Pi case. Looks awesome.
How about PS2 Emulator on Raspberry Pi 5?Will it run better?Or not?
Best vid I've seen on setup. I did mine on a lenove m90q & this was seamless. Great job sir
Batocera has performance issues. Ps2 works performance varies based on what os your using
Have you released this case yet? If so, does it support NVME SSD? Thanks!
Some people use a copper shim between cpu and case, this will bring the temperature much lower. Good luck
I tried Batocera and it wasn't as optimized as RetroPie (through manual install). It's been working fine, so I hope there's an official image soon.
Thanks for the useful information. I'm hoping a better cooling solution will eventually be available. I'd like to see if overclocking improves playability for newer system emulators. Did you happen to check for thermal throttling while testing?
Up to what emulators can Batocera support on an N100 cpu?
Is it the 4gb ram version or the 8gb version
I used both actually. But it doesn't matter for emulation. 4gb performs the exact same.
Any idea if ps2 works somewhat ok?
Check out Explaining Computers channel and his Radxa X4 review. He used copper plate between cpu and cooler with thermal paste, and it was huge difference. He could run it without fan.
Ohhh interesting!!! I'll check it out!
I watched that one. He put the shim in , because even with the pad, there was still a bit of a gap.
Nice video, well done ✅👍 and cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Well Done Sir! I've been a Batocera Dork for a long time, It's Everything I Tried to get Linux to Do 20 Years Ago LOL I find a Bunch of eWaste from time to time, the Kiddos and I Tear it all down & Detail them like new, then see what it can play. Then Donate to a local family. New Sub; Dryden, Mich.
Your N64 performance issues are due to resolution and storage speed. You're above native, and likely using slow storage. It runs the entire library perfectly fine. A better test would be the various MAME 3D titles that only use CPU emulation of older GPU tech.
I just went back and retested with 2 things suggested. I changed the resolution to 640 x 480 and using a high speed external USB 3 SSD drive. It didn't make any changes to the performance issues on the games that had performance problems. I think either the emulator isn't optimized fully for the Pi 5 or the Pi 5s GPU is too weak. Even though it's significantly better than the Pi 4 ... It's still a little low on power. I tested N64 because it was one of the systems that I really want to play, and that didn't play very well on the Pi 4, and the Pi 5 certainly did better than Pi 4.
I would do a 2 tbr even 4 tb
would a pre-1992 UK 1p copper coin be a good heatsink bridge /shim ?
Good idea! I might try that and loading up a bios that lets me go past 6W.
maybe pi 6 can be capable of emulating wii perfectly....in 4 or 5 years.....
Great video, very clear and well produced - but it was really distracting that you were reading a cue slightly above the camera. It felt like you were never making eye contact and your eyes were scanning left and right noticeably. I normally wouldn't mention something like this on someone's video, but you've clearly went to a lot of bother to make the video look great that this feels like an avoidable distractor! Thanks again for the info and keep up the awesome work.
Thanks! Yeah, I'm still getting used to talking on camera so I put an iPad with the script on top of my lens. I was hoping no one noticed it but I'm getting better with practice 😅
@@ArtisansAllianceTake your script, break it into keywords only, use the keywords as a guide only, fill the words in naturally from memory. Your speech will sound more natural and it will eliminate the eye contact problem. Great video! Thanks!
Have an argon one v3 case, works well with batocera. Waiting for an official retropie image sometime this month, so I can switch from micro sd to nvme, and install the argon case fan script.
@24:00 dont forget you can set the defailt for GC to be 3x and set a game-specific resolution for Metroid Prime to be 2x and get the best of all worlds!
Great tip!!! Thanks!!!
Go for the n97 with DDR5 and save money buying a Gamesir Nova Lite controller for a better overall experience.
i take back being nice to you, if youre so dumb you rate the pi 5 a b based on compatability of the one emulator you tested then you deserve shit performance, it can run ps2 games bro, mupen 64 plus is the go to if not the libretro version, if you keep using locked down distros you will act like the spoiled kid you are, back up man its all free software and youre really stingy bro, learn what youre talking about before you teach
Informative video! By pressing F1 while Batocera is running you can open internal file manager. There you can select connected drives to copy and paste games/bios. Please do more videos. Greetings from Germany.
I find the internal file manager a bit clunky. I def prefer to access the SHARE remotely and/or terminal over ssh and use rsync and/or scp. but the file manager is another option of course!
Excellent Raspberry Pi 5 walk-through! Clear and concise with some nice tips and tricks too. Thanks so much for this!
Cool video. Have you ever tried launch box/big box?
Not yet, but it's on my to-do list!
If you "just unplug your pi" you run the risk of corrupting the SD card.
The biggest advantage of pi5 is you can hook it up to a crt cia an rgb-pi cable or vga hat. And that changes the game when comparing to more powerful pcs.
The RGB pi only works on the pi4, and you can hook up any modern PC to a CRT or Arcade monitor. So... no.
@@omgitsbats you can use RGB-pi cable with Pi5 (with recalbox). Yes you can connect pc to a crt with an older Ati card, and that's fine, though needs some tinkering.
Sure you can get it as low as $75..... But that's the "got ya". When you add the Fan, the proper power supply (which is somewhat uncommon!) you are looking at about $100. And that's included the SD card and probably a basic case. By then you are looking at $120...... You can get a N100 or even a N97 which will be pretty A s your entire list of Emulation as long as you don't go beyond 720p on the more Demanded system.
Emulating the old consoles is no problem. Dreamcast also is perfect. But PS2 is not possible. So if you want to run PS2 games without any issues, forget it. I run Sega Master, Megadrive, NES and SNES, PS1 and PC-engine games. Also Dreamcast and N64. But sadly PS2 games was not possible at all. For me better to use a PS2 itself.
Did you use AetherSX2 or NetherSX2 for PS2 emulation? It's been a while since I last tested it. I haven't tested it with the latest Vulkan 1.3 driver (Mesa 24.3).
Ps2 doesn’t work? Interesting
@@LivingLinux No, not using Aether SX, just tried to make it run on Batocera 4
Many people have complained that the Fan connector on the X4 is an extremely close fit... and even though i dont have an X4 to hand an good approach could be to first connect the fan "outboard" of the heatsink then rotate and flip the board over to attach it into the heatsink arrangement with the supplied stand offs and screws... So!! connect fan first then attach board and possibly not the other way around... also "finishing off" the thermal block or boss is potentially not an good idea as an high lustre "metallic" finish will likely radiate heat, take note the chip has an high finish this is to radiate heat away from its surface and removing the dull black powder coating on the Thermal boss will allow for radiant heat to radiate back onto the surface of the chip, even with an thermal pad in the way will this effect be likely to occur...also the wi-fi ariels with there soldered ends present an clear short circuit risk should they ever contact an live board therefore with there adhesive stickers an convienant space on the heat sink should be allocated to accommodate them...leaving them hanging freely is probably not an good idea either...The RTC battery pack also has adhesive mounts and the top of the Ethernet port looks likes an handy place to attach the RTC battery onto..
Could you check power consumption from the wall on idle? Currently using rp4 running plex+home assistant, it only sucks 5-7W max as seen on my kill-a-watt meter.
Great video - you covered tons of detail. Impressed - keep the videos coming.
How did the X4's temps not go above 69C lmao is it being undervolted or something? Is the cooler THAT robust?
Yeah I didn't expect that either but I think it's mostly because it's limited to drawing 6w which is 4x fewer watts than the Beelink S12. The cooler does not seem like it can handle much.
@@ArtisansAlliance Ah, I see. There's no way to adjust that in the BIOS/UEFI?
@@ArtisansAllianceI would like to see what solution you get by having the CPU Heatsink "at the bottom" of the Board, you need to look for another efficient Heatsink cooler if you overclock that CPU @25W on the new unlocked BIOS
Very nice tips!!! loved the vid, thanks very much for all this info.
How much latency you got in controller ?
I'm not sure actually ... I don't feel any abnormal latency when I'm playing but I'm not sure how sensitive to latency I am compared to others. I was thinking about doing a latency test in part of another video.
i find the pi5 really interesting for android gaming and emulation...then for everything else i recommend more a intel n100. it cost pretty much the same price but has windows and better specs and compatibility for emulation.
"Has windows" This is not necessarily a pro, but I guess you can just replace it with linux. If you want a stable, seamless retrogaming experience, a custom linux system is preferred. I do have windows on one of my minipcs, because I also want to play regular PC games and it is horrible with its wonky windows-ness, constant updates etc. A linux-based system like batocera just works, in most cases.
@@Evilkingus i can tell you never seen an arcade machine running hyperspin as shell on windows XP or seven. There is a reason why most japanese arcade machine are windows and x86 based. And if you really want Linux. Mint, a lot of other distro and emulators are precompiled only on x86.
did you use vulkan .the trouble is if your not an expert in emulation scene you wont get best out of it.
Did you experiment with overclocking for N64, Wii, or GameCube? Would be interested to see how CPU and GPU overclocking could improve playability on those systems.
Yeah, I tried overclocking as much as possible. 3ghz on CPU and I forget how high on GPU ... But it didn't make enough of a difference to make any of the games I thought we're unplayable playable. I tried overclocking for GameCube too and it didn't make much of a difference for that either 🤷♂️
@@StevenLewandowski Hey, Steve, do you have a video out somewhere about that Pi case with more info on it? It looks really cool. Thanks.
@@WR3ND not yet!!! It's on my to-do list for sure!
@@StevenLewandowski Awesome. Looking forward to it. Cheers.
Hey man, I'm having trouble playing GameCube games. They're telling me there's no save file on the memory card slot and won't let me go any further. I also can't open the quick menu (hotkey + a) any ideas?
My guess is that you don't have the GameCube bios file. You can launch games without it but theres some weird stuff that'll happen without it. You can check with the bios checker in the menu. For pulling up the quick menu with hotkey + a, that only works for systems that use emudeck. For GameCube emulator settings, you have to change them inside the Batocera menu for the system.
@@ArtisansAlliance nice one yeah actually I think I did see a message about the bios file but chose to be lazy and ignore it 😂 thanks man I'll give that a try
Exactly what I have been looking for. Well explained content on getting retrogaming working on Pi 5 beyond 'run installer and copy roms over'. Thank you! (edit: any 'pro tips' or optimizations beyond what you have covered already would be good - if there are any :) - cheers)
I got one for a batocera desktop cabinet I recently made. Its great it even runs a fair amount of 3d arcade games such as virtua fighter 3 on model 3, and a lot of naomi and atomiswave games as well.
