Imposter Syndrome | How do Artists Deal
To Hannah: just a thought, have your students listen to the podcast and take notes lol. Get some extra views!
Just found your podcast, love the subject matter and love both of your artwork. I get this all the time, especially when people give me props. I always just kind of write if off...
Not me, stitching a dark blue butterfly while hearing you say: all the blues bleed out... I have a theory considering the Anchor/DMC split in regions. In the Eastern countries, there often are local brands that are much more affordable. I have seen Indian, Russian and Finnish thread brands that are way more affordable and seem to be of great quality, too. I think it is because embroidery is still practiced more often in some countries because their tradition is still there, thus the traditional brands survived globalization. This might make it harder for western companies to sell the more expensive threads so that DMC just didn't bother and Anchor thought it was an opportunity. Or maybe Anchor spread there first and the market is not profitable enough for 2 major brands so DMC just said screw it, we will expand to the west. It is fun to theorize about stuff like that :D
Hello. Have just found you guys. Love this podcast. I really love to use cottage garden threads. They are made and dyed in Australia. They are so beautiful to use. Also while talking about using good quality resources I also think that you put so much time and energy into making anything handmade why would you want to use something cheap that is going to give you a cheap outcome and possibly make things harder for you.

My most favourite learning moment from Vika is ‘how to use the Nurge hoop stand properly’. I think of that video each time I put my hoop in the stand. 😊
So wonderful to hear! It’s been a game changer!
Thank you for another great episode! Having no visual on this one made me realise just how easy to follow your voices are! I'm not a native speaker and I struggle with oral English sometimes but I nearly didn't look at the subtitles this time.
Oh that’s wonderful to hear!
Another great episode! It was quite a journey for me, as a French person 😂 At first "wow I'm so glad I have my DMC towers in my shop with so many colours" before some "americans pay HOW MUCH for thread???" and finally the whole "broder" thread (special ?) I especially want to test out! Over here it's DMC kingdom with sometimes those big bags of non-descriptive thread. I'll keep a look out though!
I loved listening to this while stetching out a few embroidery design ideas.
Yay! So glad to hear it!
Loved this conversation about threads! FYI- JP Coats(Scotland/England) merged with MEZ(Germany) to make ANCHOR! vs DMC(France) and you missed the other biggie! Cosmo(Japan) :)
Good to know!
Such a great episode! I sat and listened while I made patchwork quilt squares to put on a dress❤ I will say another good social media site related to Instagram is Threads. It’s gaining traction and I’ve in particular been having success in connecting with fellow creatives there. There’s a very supportive and kind vibe over there, and I really feel like I get the chance to actually talk to people, and they interact! And although I do interact with my audience on Instagram, it’s not as chatty and supportive as threads. And I agree with the unpopular opinion about sunlight! I live in Oregon and never can count fully on natural light for photos , so a light ring is my friend 😂
Love your content girls!Everything is so helpful!Keep going the amazing work!!!
Thanks so much!
always highly enjoy stitching while listening to you both ♥ and today i was cross-stitching a pigeoncoop design! i love him too
Thanks so much! Love that you were stitching one of Max’s designs while you were listening!
I love listening to both of you, when ever I'm working on any of my crafting projects, including my embroidery. Though lately I've been listening while working at my job.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for doing this podcast. And opening my horizons.
You’re so welcome! Thank you for listening!
Such a great and relevant podcast, in terms of content that small businesses need😊. It’s been wonderful to listen too! I agree when you were talking about Etsy that it’s very difficult anymore as an artist to be successful there; I left after 12 years on Etsy, recently. I moved completely over to my own website, WordPress. It was a difficult decision to make, but with their rising fees, lack of being found anymore within the millions of listings, and not being the cozy handmade site I once remember, offered many reasons to leave. I also have many friends who have had their shops closed without any reason whatsoever! Too Many horror stories to mention. basically, you are a guest in their home until they ask you to leave; having your own website, gives you the control over your handmade business for sure. ❤
Both of you need to be on screen the whole time in the video. Ain't no need for all these constant switches between the two of you every 3 seconds. It's hella annoying and super distracting, to tell you honestly.
Hey, just wanted to let you know how much I’m enjoying listening to your conversations. I have experienced burn out career wise as a social worker and I think that may be why I’m so hesitant to fully jump in and make my hobby a business. It has brought in some income but I don’t want to end up resenting what I enjoy. Either way, it’s helpful to hear how you navigate it.
Thanks so much for listening! Social work is so tough, bless you for being in that field! Your feelings are super valid with being hesitant to jump from hobby to small biz! Hugs!
In India, we don't find DMC. Anchor is the only good quality thread we have access to. I would love to compare the two though!
I've been enjoying these podcasts and thank you for doing them!! The internet embroidery community is the only place I get to talk embroidery and just the conversation you all are having is very chill and fun to listen to. I love the movie Chicago and that song is one of my favorites lol. I get the reference Hannah! I think tik tok live is a great idea and hopefully I'll be able to make it. :) I got into embroidery through a "Free Class", $5 for the materials and fell in love with it. I thought it was a great introduction and any questions we had, were answered thoroughly. When I went home, I grabbed my Mom's sewing needles and have just used those to embroider with. Even now, I don't really use embroidery needles because I don't like the selections that are offered, So I get what Vika is saying. I have yet to break a needle, and dare I say, throw one out, lol. Anyway, you all have such great talking points!! Keep it up!!
Hey! Thanks for the awesome podcast 😊 could you share the link for the light?
I think my favorite dmc color is 917. And that time color thing that Vika does that is just a you thing lol but an awesome thing. 😂
it's interesting how you recommend to start, i've been interrested to start embroidery for a year, but put it off for a while because i started a lot of new hobbies that i didn't keep for long. So i changed my strategy, i bought nothing but enlisted myself in a class and it changed everything. I started in september, with a plastic hoop and generic threads for now because we're mainly messing around and not expecting anything great from our work, and slowly our stitches are improving, having a teacher is really helping with that imposter syndrome. Now we're slowly going up in our supplies quality, using more and more dmc and, buying good quality hoop etc. I think now it's the road i want to take for any new hobby i want to try, instead of buying craft supplies and using it only a few time before stopping it
That’s a cool approach! Thank you for sharing! I’m glad you’ve found something that works for you!
i also would add a lint roller to the list , some stitches are messy to undo
Just to say I'm loving your podcasts vibes! I can really relate to lots of things you talk about, you guys are amazing!
That’s wonderful to hear! Thank you for listening!
Hannah, here, in Brazil, we can edit stories to add mentions. Have you checked the three dots?
I just learned that we can edit tags in stories!!! So thrilled!
Loved to listen to you! Also, was a little shocked that Vika loves to edit videos, cause this is the worst part of my job for me. Social media is just so exausting...
Fun, inspiring and cool. Thanks, both! I am slowly growing my passion for embroidery: stitching and listening to you. I am journaling my journey on Instagram, I don't know if it will eventually have the potential to become something more, but I am excited to hear how you two both have started your businesses and how you are and have been tackling all the challenges along the way. Thanks for being so open about it ❤
So kind of you to say! Thank you :) We both hope your art and embroidery journey brings you joy above else! Thanks for being here!
I loved listening to this conversation as I knitted this morning.
Thank you so much for listening!
such an interesting conversation, really enjoyed listening while I stitched :) also I'm super excited to receive my kit soon!
We are so glad to hear it! Can’t wait to see what magic you stitch up!
You are living your dreams for a living!
We really are ❤
You are both fabulous humans. I love this so much that I want another episode, like right now! haha Watching you is just like hanging out with you. You are both so natural and authentic. Love, love, love that you are making this podcast.
You are the biggest super star! Thank you! ❤️
So excited for our kits and excited for you guys!
Thank you so much! We are also super excited!
