I recently moved to Yokohama with my wife who is Japanese, I am a visible American of color but whenever I visit coffee shops in Yokohama. There are always women who stop and give me terrible stares of disgust whilst I am sitting and having my coffee. I'm not bothering anyone I'm working on my PC quietly and I've lived in Japan for over 2 decades, and I've never been treated like this before except in Yokohama. This has happened to me on three occasions in 2 months and the most recent occasion was yesterday when a married Japanese couple (who were outside the coffee shop) noticed me sitting at a coffee shop with my wife and decided to make it explicitly known that they were stopping and staring in disgust at me. I'm truly amazed at how much racism and xenophobia exists in Japan in 2024. Or more precisely Hoshikawa, Yokohama. I've lived in over 30 countries around the world including apartheid South Africa back in the day and for me Japan is the most racist and xenophobic country I've ever been to. This is all new to me in Japan even after living here for more than 2 decades.
