How 3 Months at Stanford Changed My Life
Ever thought about taking a long break from work but weren’t sure if it was the right move? In this video, I share my personal experience of taking a 3-month sabbatical at Stanford University as a visiting scholar-and how it completely transformed my perspective on both my career and my life.
As an anesthetist or anaesthesiologist for 8 years, I found myself on autopilot, and the burnout from the pandemic only made things worse. I knew I needed more than just a quick weekend getaway to recharge. So, I took the leap and applied for a sabbatical. But this wasn’t just any break-it was an opportunity to immerse myself in the heart of innovation at Stanford, combining my work in healthcare with...

Some apps in 2024 for Windows still relies on old visual studio C++ (like 6.0) this won't be able to run on ARM machines.
Yeah and the beta Pycharm for arm64 wasn't working initially either. Hopefully it's a bit of teething issues and will get resolved quickly
How can i find a samsulg like screen protector for surface x pro to reduce glare at that level ?
Not an expert on this, but I think that's a special glass. I'm sure they'll eventually be out, but I haven't seen anything as good as what Samsung currently has
thank you brother, I saw the other video on screen protector you recommended and this one seem to be the best one , so I am going with this one
I'm glad it was useful!
Take that Leap! If this video taught me anything, it will be difficult and different, but that's where you can grow! Whether it's for a break or a much-needed new environment, try something new!
🎉 Glad you got something out of it. Doing something different always feels a bit scary and I think hustle culture and the opposite reaction means that it's all work, or all break. I just wanted to show that you CAN take a long break, recharge and it might give you more ideas/help in your career than if you just pushed through
one thing I would like to see/hear how the slim pen works with these protectors, maybe also get a different pen and test out the experience with other pen nibs. I want to replace my current plastic screen protector with a paper like one and I was wondering how the slim pen acts when working with these protectors, does it wear off the slim pen over time?
So far that's all I've used with these: the slim pen. I can't say I've seen any noticeable wear so far, but I'm sure over time it'll wear a bit out like any rubbery product. But given I've been using this ben since the Pro 9, no issues to date
Great video! 3 months went by fast
Thanks! Yeah it really did!
Thanks for the video, it was very well made. I'm excited to see where ARM windows will go! Just a bit of constructive criticism though, I found the shaking effect a little distracting. Keep killing it!
Thanks for the feedback! Still learning to balance effects and creating a somewhat distinctive video style with some templates. Glad you liked the video- first time doing this "explainer" style so lots of things to improve!
my surface pro 11's battery life is much different to yours.... lost 5% just watching this video :( Finding that I need to plug it into charge 6 hours in, I do use mine quite a bit i guess, being in an office desk job and in I.T, but I was expecting at least 1 solid day of use. But even on Battery saver enabled at 100% battery, it struggles by 1-2pm if I started my day at 9am. My tasks usually revolve around answering emails, researching solutions on the web via Edge, 1-2 RUclips videos every 2 or so hours and some tools to troubleshoot customer's PC. Its not that much better than other laptops in my experience so far. The battery percent just keeps ticking down. 2% since typing this message... so after watching a 10min clip and spending another 5 min typing, i'm down 7% But great video, liked and subbed.
That's very surprising. My tasks currently are pretty similar I have to day. My guess is that you probably need to use more applications that are currently emulated rather than native? Biggest difference to battery happened if I changed the power plan from anything other than the recommended. Otherwise heavy apps running on emulation made an impact, but so far it's still held up as per the video. I did try and specifocally search for arm64 version of apps when I set up the device (ie dropbox I had to search for the arm64 version on their site)
How many Hz do you apply to the screen? Have you tried 60 Hz? Also what's the power mode?
I have at 120 dynamic and recommended power mode
Hi raffy, do you know if the food in the Qantas lounges/in business class meals is halal? I've found this information hard to come by
I've asked a few times and the answer has only ever been 'no'. There was seafood and veg options though
I want to buy a window's device BUT I have ALL apple devices and it's very convenient and functional (the hand-off system). How do I merge these two together?
Well, there are options that replicate most of Apples features, but beyond my scope to answer since I haven't used Apple products in about 5 years. Windows and android play fairly well together these days. As far as I'm aware, you won't have ALL the functions because that requires you to buy into another ecosystem. Samsung for example has a very similar ecosystem to Apple, but Surface isn't as seamless
@@RaffyHalim thank you so much!!
@@ThisLIFEisR no problems! Good luck with it all
Hello Halim, is your surface oled or IPS?
Mine is the OLED panel
Did anyone else notice that when using co-pilot plus it doesn't have memory like chatgpt 4o. This is a massive issue for me as i have trained 4o with acronyms to remember entire philosophies or data sets. Maybe i am doing something wrong? Also, google Drive doesn't integrate with ARM. Any tips?
I think copilot still uses gpt4 rather than 4o hence the issue. I mainly use gpt4o desperately. Currently, little bit of a gap in some services for arm64 processors. Certain VPNs/back up software not compatible yet. You can try and see if you can run it incompatibility mode but not sure if it'll work (quick share doesn't). Dropbox/one drive already work, so not sure if you can temporarily use one of those 2 services?
Looked Great, thanks for the video.
Hope it was useful! Wish I couldve taken videos more freely to give a better sense of the space
@@RaffyHalim no was great.
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed it!
Does dual screen work on this?
I use mine with an external USB screen daily! Recently upgraded to a larger external touch panel with pen input. Both ways work great 👍
@@RaffyHalim I mean like can it pair wirelessly with my Samsung tablet? I use pro 9 to pair with a tablet when I am outside sometimes

@@RaffyHalim thanks for your help great review btw
Thanks for that! I've heard of the Chairmans' Lounges but assumed I'd never know what they are like. It is both disappointing and reassuring to see they aren't all that flash.
Yeah I was very surprised to have been invited. Wish I could've taken better photos/videos. Looks like they tamped down on it in recent times on this. Still a lounge at the end of the day, but personally, I think it's a bit nicer than the business lounge offering- could just be that it sees far less foot traffic so looks less worn. Am glad for the experience the none the less!
Mine is new and leaking :( Any ideas?
Oh no! Where from? If it's new and faulty, I'm sure you could replace it under warranty?
Useful video -- hard to find screen protector comparisons that aren't for an iPad. But unfortunately, the Keanboll is sold out: between the Timovo and the Adeway, which one was better?
Noooo. There was another one I actually had in the review but some out hence didn't include. I personally felt that the plastic ones 'feel' closer to paper like the Timovo. The Adeway being tempered glass does provide more protection though. So depends what you're after specifically
gREAT vid i'M GOING TO TRY THIS ONE OUT
Awesome! Here's a recent video on a couple of others: ruclips.net/video/mXNk8ko-ShI/видео.html
definitely recommed a hard tip for paper-like screen protectors. the stock rubber tip is too grippy and not tactile enough agains the small grooves in the screen protector and also wears out quickly. i recommend either a metal pen tip replacement or a straight up hard plastic one.
any recommendations for which one to get?
@@RaffyHalim i live in sweden so i only have access to amazon. if you search "surface pen metal tip" and scroll far enough you should find one for your pen.
I'll stick to my s21 ultra until there's a bigger leap in hardware... this is practically the same phone
I still have my s21ultra- would say it's sufficiently different. The S23U was a substantial upgrade from the S22U in terms of camera performance. That's the main metric I use to upgrade. The 24U makes different trade offs but that are useful to my own pretty narrow use case. I use the S pen quite a lot so the S21U was the least convenient for me
@RaffyHalim Thanks for the reply, I honestly don't think there's that much difference in cameras judging from the comparisons I've seen. I don't use S pen, I've got tablet for that, so its not enough to justify £1300
@@NahImSte low light and video is where it's particularly different. I've tested with the S21U and latest update (my mum uses it now and she routinely comments on better photos on s24u). Ultimately it depends on your use case. I have an extremely specific one where I routinely use a pen for the 'day job' and for photo editing AND use the photos from my phone for print products. Makes it a very niche device that's perfect for me- and also very hard to find an alternative to. The great thing is- if your use case isn't so narrow, then the support for all the devices is increasing so you can keep and use for much longer. Better for the environment and your pocket!
Raffy, can you please describe your dota2 experience - this is a crucial factor for me, as i like to play DotA 2 in business trips. Did you play multiplayer, do this laggy environment with emulation affects your performance?
I haven't played online, just bot games. It's not actually lag per se. The easiest way I can describe it is imagine the refresh rate dynamically adjusting every second or so. Everything is smooth, but there seems to subtle change that u notice. It's pretty subtle and plenty of other people seem to play overwatch without trouble on the device so I'm beginning to think it's all in my head 😅
S24 ultra gang ❤
Yup! Love this phone!
Great video! Have you ever used these types of screen protectors for phones?
Thanks! I've got an anti glare screen protector on my phone but not a paperlike one
@@RaffyHalim Do you recommend the anti glare?
@@tahsinocity They're game changer - the built in screen on the samsung is antiglare to begin with but it makes SUCH a difference
It’s bad, reasons: I was unable to share vpn over the hotspot because there is NO visible hotspot adapter under network adapters (it does however share normal internet connection). Unable to install external TP link WiFi adapter (drivers do not work). Unable to run OpenGL as I implement a lot of OpenGL graphics and Java. Furthermore I was unable to run HyperV to emulate Windows x86 because it’s not supported (it only supports ARM). It’s really really bad. So much in fact that I will get surface 10 for business with Intel and x86 instruction set.
Yeah sounds like your specific use case requires a lot of things a RISC processor like the X elite doesn't support. I had some issues installing just Python on here even though there is an arm64 version. Again, I'm not doing anything that technical, so just running the x86 version on Pycharm fixed my issue. There are still some software quirks/incompatibilities that are annoying, but by and large, for me, it was worth the trade off. I hope surface for business fits your needs!
The bad: Another botched Surface Launch and no still 5G devices. Business clients still stuck buying Dell and Lenovo in order to get 5G in a Windows Tablet. Consumers still stuck buying iPads and Samsung Tab S Tablets to get 5G and good battery life.
Really? My surface pro 11 is getting me through the whole day using a mix of x64 and x86 apps- some light video editing and web mainly. But yeah, shame they didn't release the 5G version at the same time
@@RaffyHalim 5G has been a non-negotiable in every business I've worked at. Even more so after the bug.
Excellent review! Thanks.
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Hey Mate, handy video. Did amazon ever get back if its an issue with this particular device or all ?
They refunded as faulty.
Surface Pro 9 user here, definitely I will be upgrading mostly for battery life
I did too for the same reason- have not regretted at all. Few little software quirks and as I'm learning, Python modules don't seem to work with new PWA versions of Outlook etc, but the trade offs are so worth it
@@RaffyHalim which version did you get? I have Pro 9 with 16GB RAM which is plenty enough for me, but I am thinking on investing big with the Elite + 32GB RAM and 1 TB Storage, but it seems overkill haha
I have the over kill version 🤣 Only bad thing is the screen is SO reflective. The IPS panel I think is a bit more manageable. I have a couple of matte screen protectors that are meant to be paperlike that I'm testing out in the next few days to see if that helps
@@RaffyHalim oh man, my home office has big windows and a lot of natural light lol, maybe the IPS will work better for me
And then you get access to the nice Matte black version too. It was a hard toss up for me since I use the device for everything, decided slight increase on performance was worth colour of device and screen (the OLED *is* nice, but glare is very noticeable)
I was a mac user for 8 years, then moved to the hp spectre x360 for 5 years, then when i switched to the surface pro 8, i was so happy. Now i habe the surface pro 11 with the new flex keyboard. So happy with the surface devices so far. The hardware quality really stands out as compared to the other windows competitors
100% agree! Was on Mac/iPhone til surface pro 4, switched at surface pro 6 to surface book then Hp Spectre, then Lenovo Yoga, but they just never felt right. Back to my favourite form factor with 9 and now this is such a nice upgrade that I can't imagine not continuing
@@RaffyHalim cool. We are on the same route. Hehehe
The last surface I had was a surface pro 4. I’ve used an iPad Pro since then. But the surface pro 11 is finally bringing me back! Can’t wait to get one
Not as touch friendly as iPad pro, but for a productivity device, nothing else really hot the spot for me!
@@RaffyHalim eh, tbh when it comes to my iPad, the only thing I do without a keyboard is draw, search the web and consume media. And I’m pretty sure those should be fine without a keyboard on the surface. Any serious stuff like typing would definitely need a keyboard anyway
@@christianr.5868 yeah agreed- I think some people think of the surface as a tablet first and laptop second. Where as I think of it mainly as a laptop with the ability to use as a tablet. Then it makes perfect sense for the tradeoffs the device has
Great video 👍 but definitely not gaming on this 😅
Why not?! It's such a smooth gaming computer 🤣
Always refreshing and genuinely useful to have a review from an actual Surface user. Also appreciated the shoutout to the original Surface RT.
One of my favourite form factors/devices. Tried to switch away a few years ago, but missed it too much. This generation really does feel like the OG vision IMO!
@@RaffyHalim I plan to replace my SP7 with this, even after looking around for better value/performing alternatives. For lovers of the form factor, the only real replacement for a Surface Pro is another Surface Pro.

Fuck Microsoft.
Great video! I've been fascinated recently with the architecture of microchips and their evolution over time. The designers behind them and nothing short of geniuses! I was thinking of switching from a Windows to a Mac laptop due to their smaller form factor and efficiency but now will have to wait and see what the Copilot+PC has to offer.
Thank you for the kind words! It's the first video I've tried tackling a complex topic. Also, just published the unboxing/hands on of the new Surface Pro with Snapdragon X Elite
A Tip ! Do not copy TV format! People these days know what they’re looking for. They already knew the history before you present it. The TV model where all watched the same required some introduction. Not today That is why your video is s NO NO!!!!
Thanks for the feedback. While I still have a small audience, I've decided to experiment a bit and this was one of those experiments. I'll keep your feedback in mind for future videos :)
yes rip x86 💀 💀 💀
Really does seem that way doesn't it?
Excellent video! Thank you. Interesting comment about there being no “paper like” comment on the box. Amazon sell two versions of this protector and the description for the more expensive one does mention “paper like” but none of the product images mention that. My primary reason for buying this would be for the paperlike feel plus reducing the screen glare. Seems like this is worth getting?
I personally like it for the feel, but I think that the ones for other tablets are closer to 'paper' but also the tip of the surface pen is a bit rubbery too vs the rest. It cuts down reflections and make it more pleasant for me so I haven't looked back, but I suppose it depends on preference there?
@@RaffyHalim thanks for getting back to me. I saw this pretty negative review on Amazon: "Unfortunately it's quite horrible to use. The anti-glare coating is achieved by microscopic etching of the top layer of the glass. When this is done properly (e.g. on Apple's nano texture glass) it gives a smooth finish that still retains contrast. When it's done like it has been here, it results in a sandpaper-like texture that has a very noticeable hit on contrast. The first photo shows the difference when looking at the display with a light source directly overhead, and the second photo shows leftover skin cells from light use of the touchscreen." May I ask if you have seen a "very noticeable hit on contrast" or the screen looking dirty and marked with "left over skin cells"? I have noticed my iPad screen looking a little less fresh with its Paperlike protection but you can easily wipe it clean and that is more than made up for with the better writing feel it gives. I think you mentioned a possible reduction in sensitivity with the screen protection though queried whether that was due to the number of apps that were open and running in the background. I would really like to find a protector that improved the writing feel and cut down on glare without dulling the display too much. I am hopeful that this Adeway protection may be the answer. It's just sad that Paperlike don't do one of their excellent screen protectors for the Surface Pro. Thanks for your further comments if you have the time to respond. Needless to say, I have subscribed!
There is a little drop in contrast for sure but for my use case where I'm looking fairly straight on at the surface most of the time, I don't notice it that much and the reduction in ambient light reflection more than makes up for it. In terms of the "feel" there's definitely room for improvement - I've played around with the reMarkable series of tablets and they definitely "feel" better, but they're also an entire hardware product centred around paperlike feel, so hard for a screen protector overlay to match that. I do have 3 others now to test and will be doing that video next week when the new Surface arrives. But, if it helps, I've used the Adeway one now since instal. Still have a spare around but haven't been tempted to take it off. For me, the ease of application, "does what it says on the box"-ness and relative affordability makes it worth having it on.
@@RaffyHalim many thanks again for your response. I have Boox devices and the Kindle Scribe and of course the Surface Pro, even with screen protection, is never going to equal them in terms of paper-like feel. That’s understood. If the Adeway protection is as good as the Paperlike for my iPad that will be a big and worthwhile improvement. The iPad’s writing experience isn’t as good as an e-ink device but it is very much better than without the Paperlike cover. Interesting that you are going for the new SP11. Good look with that. I ordered one but then cancelled it as I realised that the non-OLED screen in my SP8 is good enough for me, as is its speed for my “light” if full day use of it and it’s only the battery life that isn’t great. Will wait to see what the reviews say about the SP11 in the coming weeks once they ship. Will also hold off buying the Adeway protection until I see your further reviews. I haven’t come across any SP protection on Amazon U.K. that says it offers paper-like feel other than the £18.49 Adeway one.
