Gabe Newell made that point, games are for fun. When you go for realism it is just boring. I think the open worlds are now boring. They put so much effort into the world, when it at the end of hte day it just becomes a background. Games were more fun when the effort was put into the game play, e.g. half life 2, A texture background does the job fine. You don't need to programme loads of background characters.
