How to Identify the Conclusion and the Reasons
#ArgumentMap #Argumentation #CriticalThinking
In this video we’re going to discuss a very simple and effective way to differentiate reasons from conclusions: “Therefore and because” test:
1. Insert “therefore” in front of the sentence which you believe is the conclusion.
2. Insert “because” in front of the sentence(s) that you have determined to be reasons.
3. Check if the text makes sense logically. If yes, then the conclusion and reasons have been correctly identified. If not, then analyse the text again, identify another potential conclusion and reasons and go through steps 1-3 again.

Once you have the answers to these questions you can determine the strength of the argument. The three questions we need to ask about each claim are: What does this claim mean? What evidence is there to support or deny this claim? How strong is the e...

The Easiest Way to Improve Critical Thinking
Просмотров 4973 года назад
#ArgumentMap #Argumentation #CriticalThinking This video explains why using argument maps is one of the easiest ways to improve critical thinking. Reading an argument can be very demanding because the elements we’re looking for such as reasons, claims, evidence can get lost within other parts of text. And this is where argument maps can help. Rather than trying to put all these elements in a li...

Understanding Arguments with Descriptive Outlining
Просмотров 3514 года назад
#ArgumentMap #Argumentation #CriticalThinking Descriptive outlining is a technique which helps “see” in more depth the author’s intentions. What could be more beneficial for critical thinking than looking at a paragraph and more than just understanding what it says, being able to figure out what it does- uncovering the author’s unstated ideas. Here are the steps to be taken: • Split the text in...
Understanding Arguments with the Doubting Game

#ArgumentMap #Argumentation #CriticalThinking Within the doubting game, we are moving from accepting the text to examining it. The steps are: • Find any information that is accepted as true, but no proof is presented • Investigate the writer’s expertise • Analyse the efficiency of any rhetorical techniques (pathos, logos, ethos etc.) • Is the evidence presented appropriate? • Question the claim...
Understanding Arguments with The Believing Game
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.4 года назад
#ArgumentMap #Argumentation #CriticalThinking Playing the believing game means reading a text with a perspective where we keep a very open mind and as much as possible try to suspend all judgement. We do this so that we can better understand the author’s position before any personal thoughts or opinions jump in our minds. Here are the steps adapted from Jennifer Fletcher’s book: • Find the cent...
