A Love Letter to My Favorite Camera. The SX-70!
would this work if i expose it in sunlight?
Yes!
Люблю атмосферу старых камер. Каторые откраещь через силу. А твой апгрейт аутетичный.
I am wondering what kind of china ink should i use to achieve the red effect? the black one doesnt work... I love to experiment with cyanotype. Thank you for the video, Julian! It gave me some new ideas which i will try out.
There is just colored ink you can buy. I had the best result with acrylic-based ink. If the color of the ink is too dark you can dilute it with water. Hope that helps!
@@JulianSandro thank you! i will try it out!
do you use any other product to make sure it doesnt fade on fabric? thank uu
No, with Cyanotype printing I just use the standard emulsion, but if you need something more resistant you might look into the solarfast emulsion by jacquard. Hope that helps!
Pretty 😎 cool. How do you plan to use the new glass print. I can imagine a glass mobile to hang in the window. ❤
The glass mobile is a great idea! I thought of using it in some kind of Tiffany glass art piece, although I haven't worked with glass so that might be somewhat in the future.
great video. thanks
I love your work!!!! I have been playing with polaroids and your video inspired me to keep on playing with this technique!!!!! thank you
I have been working my way through the cyanotype rabbit hole , but not finding an answer to my query…. What happens if you use a regular photo transparency instead of a negative? Does it print out as a negative? Hope this isn’t a silly question 🙏
Yes. If you don't invert the image the resulting print will be a negative.
@@JulianSandro I appreciate you 🙏 would you happen to know if you can set the cyanotype so it doesn’t wash out ? Or is that necessary?
@@ivermectin3191 A standard Cyanotype will always be sensitive to water. But you could use the "Solarfast" products by Jacquard. These are not only available in multiple different colors but can also be set on paper or fabric so you can put them in the washer. They work more or less the same as Cyanotypes, just follow the instructions on the packaging
@@JulianSandro one more question, cause I’m like that😂😂 … have you ever heard of anyone applying “never wet” to cyanotype after producing one? If not I may try that and upload the outcome…..
@@ivermectin3191 I haven't heard of that but I'm super curious. Definitely let me know how it turns out!
Beautiful!
This is really beautiful and very creative. Well Done!
Fantástico video!!!!
Amazing an very helpful. Thank you, I will watch all you Video about Cyanotype. 🤗
I tried this process, and had a bit of a problem. Wondering if you could give some advice. I created the solution with the gelatin, let it dry and then exposed the image. When I went to the washing step (trying to be gentle). Some of the dried and exposed cyanotype washed off. Do you have ideas how to correct this? Thank you so much!
During my experiments, this was mostly the case when the emulsion wasn't completely dry or too thick. Ultimately, I ended up drying the coated piece of glass overnight. I achieved a thinner coating by heating up the glass plate to about the temperature of the emulsion. That way it would be less viscous, allowing me to spread it more thinly. Also, make sure to clean the glass plates before applying the emulsion. If none of these things help you might even consider using less gelatine. This will also allow you to spread it more thinly. I hope that helps!
@@JulianSandro Thank you so much. I will give it another try. I think I may have added too much gelatin and let it dry longer.
Well done. Reminded me of Man Ray. Thank you.
I also like Tom Ang 😊
This is the solution I needed! As I want to print over gold leaf! Going to run out and get some supplies and give it a try.
Sounds Great!
This really prints on the glass or its only a thin layer of mixture, and if you scratch it, it would break?
The emulsion is directly applied to the glass, but yes it is very much prone to scratches. Maybe you'd be able to seal the print with a coat of resin, but I haven't tried that yet. Hope that helps!
Did you do the video about cyanotype on metal? I tried to find it, but i did not see it.
I haven't done that yet. Although I have done some experimentation, it is a bit more difficult than anticipated. Sorry.
If you darken it enough, you will have a print tht needs to be backlit, and I think that would be spectacular.
Does one need a lightbox to try this? Will sunlight work? Totally new to this so please excuse if it's a silly question. Thank you for the beautiful video :)
Sunlight will work fine! Best on a cloudless day.
Thank you for your video and for all your tips. After rinsing, should we use a product to fix the image? and which one? Thank you.
You don't need a product to fix the image. The gelantine will actually get quite hard so just let it dry.
Margin is that a kind of butter?
I've never been able to use tap water due to its alkalinity. Watching all of the images rinse down the drain is unpleasant.
Sounds terrible. Have you tried using more absorbent paper?
No offense intended, but I don't believe your tap water is the problem. An image washing away is usually attributable to inadequate exposure time or insufficiently prepared paper; that is, a paper the emulsion isn't able to be absorbed by. Best wishes from Vermont 🍁
@@TheStockwell No. It is the pH 9 tap water with the calcium. See "Cyanomicon" by Dr. Ware. Just moving to distilled water fixed the issue.
@@TheStockwellany idea what happens if you use a regular photo transparency versus one that has been switched to negative transparency
@@TheStockwellif you say it turns out to look like a negative IM GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF FUN THIS WEEK
Share your Cyanotype printing Tips and Tricks in the Comments!
What if you just used red paper? I use gold leaf on metal etchings and the glue I use is liquid. With a finer artist brush you can get very crisp lines. The glue needs to set at least 30 minutes before applying the leaf
The paper not only has to be water resistant but also needs to absorb the emulsion in just the right way. So it was easier to use the paper I always use instead of looking for some red watercolor paper. But thanks for the info on the gold leaf!
THX 👍
This is really helpful! I actually like the wiggly edges and I purposefully do them. It’s fun to give different textures edges by painting the solution on with different types of brushes or sponges, letting the solution drip or splash, etc. anywhere the solution is, it will develop. So, you can basically draw with the solution. And that adds a whole new layer of excitement!
What mistakes have you made before in Cyanotype printing?
I have yet to master making a digital negative. I can't get the toner dense enough with the one laser printer I have access to, and my inkjet doesn't work with transparencies. In the meantime, I've been doing photograms and contact printing medium format negatives.
@@RickLeMon A trick I've heard of is to print the same digital negative two times and stack them on top of each other, this should help with the toner density issue. Hope that helps!
what paper do you use to make the negative photo?
I use transparent film typically used for overhead projectors. I then use my inkjet printer to print the negative photograph onto them. For more details you can watch this video: ruclips.net/video/2xqkIqRpMEA/видео.html Hope that helps!
@@JulianSandro alright, noted. thank you for sharing!
the mixture and heating shouldn´t be done on red light? thanks
The mixture is only light-sensitive when it's dry. So no need for red light while mixing!
It has been difficult to find good videos about polaroid techniques, and how to use it in a professional way, until i saw your videos. You're doing great great photos. I've been years into digital photography and now I wanted to start with polaroid. Three questions, are you taking your pictures in manual mode? What is the app you were using for your first photo? What polaroid camera you recommend me to get professional results? Keep doing such grat videos.
Thanks for the Praise. As for your questions: There is no manual mode on the Polaroid Cameras I use, just full automatic. The only way to adjust the exposure is with a little wheel for exposure compensation. The App I use is called Light Meter (I use the free version for Android). Make sure to calibrate the App. The easiest way is by comparing the exposure of your DSLR and the values in the App while pointing the camera and the smartphone at the same scene. Then adjust the value on the bottom left until the values of your camera match the values in the App. If you want a camera that closely resembles the features of a modern digital camera I'd recommend buying one of the latest Polaroid cameras like the i-2 or now. If you want a cheap camera that performs well in low light I'd recommend a Polaroid 600 camera (I actually use the Polaroid Supercolor 635 in this video). If you want a foldable camera that's good for landscapes and has manual focusing I'd recommend the Polaroid SX-70 (I made a video about that one: ruclips.net/video/-djh9oVg9o0/видео.html). If you want a modded vintage Polaroid camera you might look into the MiNT Polaroid Cameras. Hope that helps!

Could you use other plant and vegetable based dyes instead of tea
Although I haven't used anything other than tea or coffee, all tannin-containing fluids/dyes should work. So try experimenting with pomegranate or cocoa. And please let me know how it turns out!
What about a layered print with multiple cyanotype glass panes that have different elements of say, a city for example, on each layer?
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Wonderfully creative and practical 💜
Have you ever built Camera Accessories Yourself? If so, let me know what you built ...
For turning it inside out, put the stick through, glue or fasten it to the fabric in one end, then pull it back out, and voila! You've turned it the easy way! if you use glue, you might wanna have some extra fabric that can be cut off;)
Sounds great. Definitely gonna try that next time
👏👏👏
Great video! Do you know how to clean the fabric if you decide to print on something wearable?
It's definitely not machine-washable. But you should be able to clean it in hand warm tap water. If you want something you can put in the washer, maybe look into the solar fast products by jacquard. Hope that Helps!
@@JulianSandronever heard of solar fast, thanks a lot.
the only thing that comes to my mind is that usually you have to let the glue for the gold dry longer... like 24 hours, it usually takes some time to get the optimal bonding with such glue
Thanks for the info! I'm gonna try that next time.
Nice to see another post from you. I always enjoy them. Thanks for all your hard work!
Nice to hear. Thank you!
