For the last question, I still don't understand why the velocity is negative. I know that you said that it is as she is on the negative side of the pendulum like swing, however isn't she still traveling in the same direction up to that point so shouldn't it be positive still? Like lets say even before she reaches equilibrium position and is on the positive side, does that mean her velocity is positive even though its going in the same direction as the velocity at the point when she is 1.5m away from end B which was declared as negative?

Thanks for that. I thought it was very interesting and some of the points raised are in common with other systems that seem to work well, such as the importance of defining the system and allowing students to talk about how they see things happening. I find that often students are just thinking about a system differently than I am but they are still correct.
