    Lovely video, nice harvest! Get it in the basket is definitely your tag line! Lol unfortunately once onions throw out scapes they are done, they won't dry out and store either as the scape comes from the centre, so maybe dice and freeze? Also means onions through winter! It's what I do with my scaped ones anyway. You've done a fab job so far, well done!

    Hi Arran, nice tour and harvest. I'd be weary about the borage. I sowed it one year, and am still trying to get rid of it because it pops up absolutely everywhere. If you have it in a pot and it drops seed, it'll still invade the garden. To be honest, it doesn't eat that well so I doubt you will think it's worth taking the space where you could grow appreciable food crops. Just my opinion, but you'll see I guess. Your sweet peas are looking great, and do make sure you leave them run to seeds. I did that last year and they all came up this year, yet the "fresh" seeds from T&M did very poor germination, as did many of T&Ms old seeds, which I a pretty sure is the problem. I sowed over 100 saved seeds ad they virtually all germinated. You've done well with the cucurbit plants, many of us have been hammered by the slugs and snails (the devils pets I call them). You might do well to thin out the parsnips as they are a bit too shoulder to shoulder and they won't grow as wide if you leave the too densely planted. You've done so well and it's great to hear you encourage other new growers, well done. X

    • @Arransvegpatch
      @Arransvegpatch 2 месяца назад

      Thanks jimmy always a pleasure to hear from you. I’ll keep that in mind about the borage may have to kill it off early before it starts producing seed. And great shout about the parsnips will thin out later today. Most of the sweet peas from this year are actually saved seed from last year will definitely be saving again. Thanks again jimmy happy growing 👍🏼

    Arran, this is not so much luck, but rather your self belief is giving you the confidence you needed, so well done. It's great to see people early in their gardening career making progress and gaining confidence and motivation. I only commented the other day in another channel that gardening is one place where the more you learn, you more realise you will have more to learn. Growing veg always brings unexpected outcomes as well as the expected. I sowed rocket once in a bed on my allotment, and it never came up. The next year, after I had sorted that same bed and sowed a new crop, that crop didn't germinate at all...but the rocket did and almost a whole row grew nice lush leaves. I still don't know what I did and how the seeds didn't rot or get scattered all over the bed from when I prepared it for the new crop. Every year, one of my pleasures (among the disappointments) is to see what surprises I'll get. Thanks for the video...btw, when are you going to put your name down for an allotment? :)

    Hi Arran, it's good to see the polytunnel filling up. I have been experimenting with taking side shoots from February sown tomato plants and so far had 100% success. This might be one way of getting reliable plants, but also because if you like to grow a lot of a particular type the seeds that are expensive (for an allotment situation maybe) this could be a way to save a bit on seeds. I like to grow Sungold F1 which are normally almost £5 (though last year I bought some on special offer at T&M for 99p) and you only get 8 seeds in a packet. I am going to try and overwinter a few of the different varieties I have grown this year, mainly for amusement and something to aim for towards next year, when I will put the plants into an area of warmth and light to stimulate them out of dormancy. I know some people do this with tiny tomatoes or the Red Robin type and grow them all year indoors with a decorative grow light heated propagator setup. I couldn't afford the expense of the purpose made grow lights, so I ordered some low-profile downlights with the right lighting qualities (just under £30 for 6), and I set them up on a length of white plastic and use them over one of those 7 cell tray window propagators you can get on Amazon, and it worked better than others I have seen, with some tomato seedlings that germinated and grew stocky and strong. There's always something interesting to try in this game. Thanks for the video. X

    Hi Arran. The tomatoes are very tall for the time of year, so they will produce, but the plants will get to the point where you'll have to let them bend over at the top and hang down. It's because they got leggy at the start. At least you'll get some fruit. I have overly tall plants in the greenhouse, but they are not too tall yet. You've done really well so keep it up. Your grow tunnel is looking good. Of all my tomato plants, somehow I only have 1 San Marzano, so I think I must have only had a few seeds and only 1 survived or they went walkies. I ordered some more seeds so I will sow them tomorrow probably, which gives me a while to get them to germinate, grow in cells, then transplant and bring on before planting them out in June. Considering we only have a fairly short summer season, it's amazing how much plants can grow over just 2-3 months. All the best. X

      @@Arransvegpatch I forgot to mention, I try to save seeds from heirloom tomatoes because you get much better germination rates. The last couple of years I could swear seed sellers are selling old stock, and I have had many failures. When you couple that with the fact they are putting much less seed in the packets it can get very expensive. San Marzanos are well worth saving the seeds from because they make the best sauce. I don't know if you said whether you saved seeds yet. This year I found a nice big round tomato at Lidl, so I bought a couple and they tasted very good, so I saved the seed, and I was in time to get a couple of them started. I don't know if they are an F1 so If they come good I'll save you a few and send them in the post in the Autumn if you want.

    Hi Arran, it's all doing well. I have loads of tomatoes and peppers that I started in February, and I just can't bring myself to throw any away, so my greenhouse glass will be bulging by the time they are hardened off. Your salad looks really good, well done. All the best. X
