안녕하십니까! I’m a Hong Kong-based professional video editor from England with an eccentric interest in the DPRK and its music. On this channel I like to polish and archive old and obscure performances. I hope it can be a useful source for you :)

NEW SONG: Kim Ok Ju - A Song Dedicated to the Motherland (조국 대한에 노래)
The most celebrated of the three new songs released to commemorate the 79th Anniversary of the Workers' Party.
It is rather typical, far from shaking the boat, but perhaps this is deliberate. This new addition now stands alongside lofty sacred hymns to the motherland such as 'Ode to the Motherland / 조국찬가' and perhaps even 'Shining Motherland / 빛나는 조국' (which is second only to the national anthem). This category may have been seen by the PAAD (Propaganda and Agitation Department) as being in need of an update. Alas, its energy upon listening could be seen as more reminiscent of 'Motherland and I / 조국과 나', a more versatile and less ceremonious song. Who else would have been selected to reco...

I don't think any of us in this small internet community expected the new song to have such universal reach. It's a shame it wasn't a *great song* of which the DPRK has many. I'm so conflicted....on one hand I like the music, the singers are very talented. Knowing what the lyrics are saying and what really happens in North Korea....and that all of it just boils down to propaganda for the whole country. But the live performance is 10 out 10. Just amazing.
