Absolutely deserved a Best Supporting Actor Oscar here. Like, this performance is why that whole category exists. Glad that Jude Law was at least nominated for Dickie though!
run away fast as u can
what peace did thomas riplay play on the piano, before freddie miles banged at his door?
Ok diva
PSH looks so mean here but in fact Matt Damon is the meanest. Great scene
Freddie was just BEGGING to be killed.
When he criticised the decor as 'bourgeois', that was the exact moment he decided to kill him.
Enjoyed when this character died.
It’s easy to see why Freddie & Dickie got along quite well. Assholes of the same feathers flock together.
I just realized PSH tosses his coat on the piano and notes Tom moves it off. That's when he knows Tom is definitely living there. He asks Tom exactly that not because he wants the answer but because he wants to know if Tom will lie.
0:39 😂
Took me two times watching this to realize Dickie is fucking with his shit on purpose, to trigger his protective behaviors, which prove the items are actually HIS. Brilliant.🤣🤣
What an Amazing Film !!! I stopped watching movies after this film. Everything these days is all about cgi and the mighty Box Office !!! This (TTMrR) was a cinematic.masterpiece .rip Anthony mangella . Only time one can appreciate gweneth Paltrow!!!
Freddie is such a disgusting character - and Hoffmann gets it across 100%
Disgusting?..he's ON to Tom,,,his intuition is 100%correct.
Freddie read Tom like a book. His mistake was underestimating Tom’s murderous tendencies. He had little respect for Tom. His assessment that there was something wrong about him was correct, but he overlooked the danger Tom represented.
Ph.S.Hoffman's piano concerto...🤣
"oh this isn't your piano oh cool then you won't mind if I fuck with it haha lol"
the moment when Tom takes Freddie's coat from the piano to put it in another place is very revealing. for that reason Freddie asks him "are you living in here?", "if it's not your house, why do you touch my freaking trench coat?"
😂!
I remember when I read this book before I even knew it was a film thinking Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be just perfect as Freddie Miles but I could never have predicted how brilliantly he captured Freddie's rather repulsive character! I think I'd only seen Phillip in Boogie Nights at that point where he plays the sweet, nerdy gay guy in love with Dirk Diggler - he did a brilliant job in that too.
Hoffman wasn't a well known actor before this movie.
man the soundtrack is brilliant...most intense movie ever
love how he slams his coat on the piano...he hates tom lol 0:03
I absolutely adore this movie! I recently read the book and was surprised at how much better the movie is. The book is boring in comparison! I can watch this movie over and over!
I've read the book too but I disagree - they're both fantastic, just very different. Ie Marge was a much more comical character in the book - in the film she's just so . . . Gwyneth Paltrow (not that I'm a Gwyneth hater; I liked her as Sylvia Plath). Maybe that's why they invented the Meredith character for the film, as a comic foil. Meredith isn't in any way villainous but just so gauche and pretentious! What's that line about how much she HATES being rich ? And it's so funny the way she keeps claiming to know everyone who's anyone - or at least "have heard of them" lol.
I love this film, and this is one of the best scenes. Freddie was onto Tom from Day 1 and felt that due to his higher class, he was somehow superior to him in every way. But Freddie completely underestimated Tom.
Tommy...how's the peeping?
Freddy might’ve been a pretentious prick but he sure was a loyal friend!
Way more loyal to Dickie than Dickie's father was.
@0:49 ~ Matt's crazy look always gets me. You can tell he's SEETHING. Love this scene.
I would hate to be the recipient of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's wrath, he is one hell of an actor.
Also in The "Tag" where Tom is holding on to The Statue, you see that it is a Symbol of everything Tom has "Now" that he desperately wants to hold on to.
Stop using capital letters, Christ!
Freddy would have made a good detective. He read Tom like a book. He knew something was 'off' about Tom from the beginning. It appeared he was looking down on Tom for class reasons. Though there were certainly an element of that, I think Freddy fundamentally sensed something wasn't right about Tom.
Freddy is basically calling Tom low-class and doesn’t belong in their circle.
I'm surprised police weren't informed that after Freddies death that it can't of been dickie seen driving his car that night as dickie could not drive.
Old money is arrogant, new money is ruthless. Freddy was right about Tom's wannabe tastes, but he underestimated just how determined Tom was to get ahead. Freddy thought all it would take was a few sneers to scare Tom off.
Freddie to Tom: "...so bourgeois" But you just gave Tom a compliment since he's actually poor lol
Freddy knew how to push Tom's button - like the way he hit those piano keys..lol
:0
Was hilarious. Did this place come furnished? Terrible isn't it lol
@@el34glo59 Totally awful! But even better now! He loved needling Tom! Was strangely fun to watch! Their horrible synergy was off the charts! 🤣🤣
@@el34glo59 Classic! He was basically saying: ‘This place has no class…just like you Tommy..’ 🤣🤣 Was driving Mr. Ripey into a sociopath rage…
Sounded like he almost going to play the Chop Suey song
It would have been in character if he had done so to show that he was so rich and established he could afford to come across as uncultivated.

0:46 Matt Damon is ready to explode
I would have walked up and bitch slapped Freddie. I guarantee he would change the tune up real quick.
Fantastic acting from Hoffman. Really encapsulates the utter snob that Freddy is. You almost want Tom to kill him, another privileged wastrel who deserves his end.
Actually he was pretty smart
But he isn't just a snob...he's actually smart.. He had the intuition of a detective and knew how to get under Tom's skin... Ultimately he is just looking out for a friend
Brilliant!
Freddie knew Tom for the user that Tom really was. Tom might have started out as a guy who wanted to do the right thing, but Tom eventually started getting way too into Dickie's life and way too into Dickie. Then the killing and then the coverup and then the takeover of Dickie's life.
He never started as wanting to do the right thing. In the opening scenes, we see him becoming what he thinks would be Dickie's ideal friend.
@@_lithp Good point. I am glad Freddie saw through him. Others might think Freddie is a snob, but it is clear that Freddie saw that Tom was in fact using Dickie right off the bat.
That piano key-eye roll-hand flick-blasé-privileged-antagonizing move was an acting masterpiece that could only be crafted and executed by Philip Seymour Hoffman. He was a genius.
Yesss I’m not exactly sure what I love so much about that part but it’s just so perfect
😂I always, always wait 4 this scene! Freddie puts me in hysterics every time he bangs on those 🎹 keys. He's pure sarcasm at its finest!😆 "In fact, the only thing that looks like Dickie...is YOU!"💜✌
He is an artist
Weird idolatry
Why-did-you-hyphenate-your -comment -?
he was a man of high society who sensed that Ripley was a faker
men of high society are all fake themselves, so fuck him
PSH was so fucking talented... god damn it.

where's Dickie's line, "wouldn't you like to eff em all..." line?
ruclips.net/video/Awqm_M_Fulc/видео.html
What a classic classic beautiful scene
Probably shouldn't.......
The look he gives him after that is epic, 'the gig is up' rage is perfect
Holy shit PSH is amazing. I don't think I could last five minutes in a room with that creep
- So bourgeois!!
