    This question is really for anyone; I don't like the taste of winter squash, but please believe when I say that I really want to like it! I've tried, and I just haven't been able to like it, as a gardener this frustrating because I would love to grow more winter sqash! I've grown Butternut and while my wife likes it okay i just bring myself to eat more than a spoonful or two. So, my question is this- Will I like this one? Is it more pumpkin flavored? Or so much sweeter than an Acorn or Butternut that it tastes different? Or at the end of the day does it pretty much just taste like winter squash?

    • @theroaminghomesteaders
      @theroaminghomesteaders Месяц назад

      It's a bit sweeter, but by itself, it is similar to most other squashes. You might want to try honeynut squashes. They are pretty sweet and tasty on their own. Happy growing! :)

    Rice dried beans even pasta have one common issue. Both require water in preparation. Therefore have a good source of clean water. 100 pounds of each won’t do you any good if you don’t have water to prepare them. Not trying to discourage because they are a staple in all preps but Humans need water and so do some of their essential foods. Keep in mind though canned vegetables I’m ready to eat out of the can and they come with their own water not to be thrown away

    Starches are killers for diabetics. Rice, Pasta, Crackers, Potatoes, Breads...

    • @theroaminghomesteaders
      @theroaminghomesteaders 2 месяца назад

      Thankfully, diabetics only represent less than 9% of the U.S. population, and less globally. Starches are actually a vital food source globally and have been forever. Even so, diabetics can still eat things like legumes/beans, oats, nuts, and other foods that don't affect blood sugar much. And most diabetics have practice and knowledge of what foods they can and can't eat. Armed with the knowledge, all they have to do is stock up on those foods, instead of starches. Thanks for watching, and happy prepping! :)

    You lost me at all the synthetic nutrients...

    • @theroaminghomesteaders
      @theroaminghomesteaders 2 месяца назад

      So put on something organic, if you prefer. Chemicals aren't bad "synthetics" if they are a basic compounds, like urea. If you object to a pure form made at a chemical plant, then use something else. It's only when they start adding artificially engineered compounds, pesticides, etc. that things get really crazy. But even organic products with added microbes and "natural" ingredients still have the base chemicals in them, just from a different chemical source. But how do you think most crops are fertilized these days? I agree, we should try and build soil and explore permaculture methods, but there is a place for some basic chemical fertilizers to get started. Happy growing!

    • @snjspring
      @snjspring 2 месяца назад

      @theroaminghomesteaders it becomes incalculably impossible to add all the trace and micronutrients. Ultimately, you'll capture the macro nutrients to grow and provide calories and sustenance but you'll forego the trace beneficial nutrients which are increasingly tied to wellness.

    • @theroaminghomesteaders
      @theroaminghomesteaders 2 месяца назад

      @snjspring unless the soil is depleted and you aren't adding compost and cow manure as well, then adding a bit extra chemical fertilizer isn't going to hurt. Also, the entire history of farming in the western world is replete with conflicting anecdotal information about what's good and bad, from mining remote ocean islands for guano to ideas about micronutrients. The truth is, we simply don't know everything about the difference between chemicals, soil, and plant synthesis yet, and even ideas we have now about "organic" gardening may change. But it's important not to overcomplicate things so that normal people feel that gardening is impractical.

    • @snjspring
