The ending reenactment made me laugh so hard 😭 HISTORY LESSON ON THE LAST HEIST!!! In James Bond’s “Dr. No” (1962) they referenced the heist by putting the painting of the Duke of Wellington inside the fictional art thief, Dr. No’s house. At the time, no one knew who stole the painting, because it hadn't been returned yet and the culprit had not yet been caught. The media referred to the culprit as Dr. No because of the gag. Not too long after the theft, a news agency received a letter allegedly from Dr. No. He said he wanted to make a deal. He would return the stolen painting if two things were done. 1. £140,000 was to be donated to a charity to help poor people pay for television licenses (I will answer your questions about this charity and cause in a little bit!) Today this money is equal to £3,397,244.49 OR $4,281,243.43. 2. Dr. No also demanded an amnesty for the theft. In case you don't know what that means, it's just a fancy word for a legal pardon. His request was indeed denied. In 1965, Dr. No voluntarily returned the painting in a suitcase using a place at the train station where they would keep lost luggage for owners to collect. About six weeks later, Kempton Bunton turned himself in as Dr. No. Police originally didn’t believe him and took him off the suspect list, because they didn't believe a 61-year-old retired man, who weighs 110kg (240lb) could have ever achieved the kind of heist that they thought happened. The police believed that the theft had to have been carried out by a professional because of how well it was executed. After he explained how he did it, he got put on trial. He ended up only getting charged with the theft of the frame because Kempton’s defense team claimed that since he never wanted to or planned on keeping the painting, he could not be convicted of stealing it. Hence his only 3 months. And to answer your question about why he chose this charity and if this cause was a common issue: at the time of the theft, Kempton was living off of £8 a week. This wage was not at all uncommon. He had a higher pay than a lot of entire households. The annual fee for a television license was £3. This was a lot of money for families making £156 a year, especially when you consider the cost of the rest of life. TV access was extremely important back then because the news was the only way to get alerts in real time. This includes immediate natural disasters, dangerous crime, information about politics, school updates, etc. These are all things that the poor should have access to just as quickly as everyone else. He asked for £140,000 to be donated because that was the estimated amount of money that would be needed to lower the annual fee price to £2 for every family in need. He claimed he stole the painting not only for the money but also to protest the fees in the first place. In 2012, it was revealed to the public that Kempton was not the one to steal the painting. It had instead been Kempton’s son John all along. Kempton had John carry out the theft, but he was the one behind the entire protest. He had taken the fall for his John, given that he was the one who would've gotten charged. John had confessed back in 1969, but no action was taken because it was concluded that even if they tried, it was unlikely that any prosecutions would succeed. In response to the case, Section 11 of the Theft Act 1968 was enacted to make removing any display object in a public space without permission a criminal defense! I'm not sure a single person read this (kind of) essay I just wrote, but one can dream. Anyway, this was absolutely an amazing video!! I mean given the fact that it sparked enough inspiration for me to spend hours researching and writing this, this video was genuinely top-tier! Please keep making these because I may or may not write another essay if you do 😌 Great work :D
