She runs a social enterprise built on these two interests and inspires people...

Thanks Helen. I had even less space in my kitchen, but I still managed both measures! Quite tricky getting the sequence with such a small number of steps presented in various combinations. Interesting musical phrasing too, particularly in the Down Sella. Deceptively simple!

thanks for uploading this. It's fascinating to learn more about Maurice Ravel. He is my favourite composer. He is often lumped with only Bolero and his other works overlooked, and overshadowed by more popular classical artists (all are criminal). His use of 20th century harmony to remix the classical styles was inspiring!

I am an historical fencer focusing on the 15th century. There are more than a few sources that suggest that dance was a fundamental part of the physical training continuum for the knightly class that go as far back as at least 1408 and possibly much earlier. I wonder if you all have connected any such dots. Thanks for the lecture. I found it very interesting and insightful.

From Ann Hinchliffe, tutor with the Historical Dance Society: Several sources for 16thC dance refer to military practices, e.g. Arbeau (in Orchesographie, 1588) describes sword practice and also marching drum rhythms, and the young gentlemen at the Inns of Court were instructed to take lessons in fencing and in dancing as part of their education. This doesn't directly answer your question but yes, HDS is aware of connexions and I'm sure my friend Charlotte is. What I personally am not aware of is the earlier references which I would love to know about. Would you very kindly post here the sources you mention? or a link to any site that lists them? Thanks for an interesting response; so pleased you enjoyed the lecture.

Thank you for this, as I hadn't spotted the Zoom session on the Facebook post about the lecture. Are there any details about the consort of musicians Joseph Banks wanted to take with him? I am particularly interested as I live in Lincolnshire, close to his home. I also play recorders, which could well have been included in 'flutes' at this period.

Banks had "thirteen servants in Scarlet and silver, composing a full Band of Music, which was very delightful" from The Journal of John Elliott , midshipman on the Resolution (Cook's 2nd voyage of discovery). Another source states: " his suite included an orchestra in scarlet and gold livery". (p. 52) The People from the Horizon. An illustrated history of the Europeans among the south Sea Islanders. Phillip Snow and Stefanie Waine. Phaidon Press , Oxford 1979. I'm afraid there are no details of the instruments they played, however, the ship’s band on Cook's third voyage included flutes, violins, hautboys (oboes), bagpipes, trumpets, French horns, and drums. www.colonialdance.com.au/omai-the-tahitian-celebrity-3706.html There's also this interesting reference about Banks in Lincolnshire: Sir Joseph Banks... on whose Revesby estate, Lincolnshire, a sword dance and play had taken place in 1779. (p 36.) Article on Sword dances by Stephen D. Corrsin in COUNTRY DANCE AND SONG no 25. June 1995 Country dance and song society of America.

Some corrections to what I said in the lecture. The dance 'Confesse' was meant to be the dance'Greenwood'; there are three 1651 dances, not two, printed with a 'square' diagram (Hyde Park, Dull Sir John and Faine I would); and female Revellers were not generally referred to as goddesses. Thanks to all the audience.
