The Newfoundland and Labrador Support for People and Patient-Oriented Research and Trials Unit (NL SUPPORT) is a research support unit based out of the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
NL SUPPORT's purpose is to change the health research culture in Newfoundland and Labrador by providing expertise, advice and funding to patient-oriented research in the province, which is to say research that directly impacts patients, reflects needs identified by patients and includes patients as partners. Exploring the Feasibility of a Patient-Initiated Research Assistance Program in British Columbia
PIRAP (Patient-Initiated Research Assistance Program) was a project that originated from the BC SUPPORT Unit Patient Council to explore the feasibility of supporting patient-initiated research. To accomplish this, the team conducted a literature review of patient-initiated research projects, followed by qualitative interviews with individuals who have experience working in patient-initiated research projects. This project was co-led by patient partners who were involved in each step of the project.
During this session, project team members will talk about what they found out about supporting patient-initiated research as well as their own experiences of working on a patient co-led project.
