Also - Come find me on TikTok (DrLExplains) where we have some really interesting conversations!
In a lot of ways, I think this goes to a bigger problem that I’ve spoken about and will continue to talk about, which is that teachers aren’t taught how people learn in the vast majority of graduate programs - they are taught the content and how to deliver curriculum, manage a class, etc. If you understand how peop...

You can literally get tired too tired to learn - why cramming doesn't work (How to study part 3)

A lot of people don't realize that you can literally tire out your working memory. This is the problem with cramming (in addition to the other points from video two). The collaboration study I mentioned: Hood, A. V., Whillock, S. R., Meade, M. L., & Hutchison, K. A. (2023). Does collaboration help or hurt recall? The answer depends on working memory capacity. Journal of Experimental Psychology:...

Apparently we don’t read full books anymore…

This is crazy. This is from an article in the Atlantic about how professors are finding it really challenging to assign full books to their undergraduate students because they do not have enough experience with reading longer texts. Originally posted on Tiktok. The meta-analysis on the screen is this one, published this year: Salmerón, L., Altamura, L., Delgado, P., Karagiorgi, A., & Vargas, C....
The Science Behind Inside Out 2: Part 3

Inside Out 2 movie from Pixar The way that they show Anxiety literally taking over Riley’s imagination and using it against her is such a brilliant concrete representation of the abstract nature of anxiety. However, it goes without saying that anxiety can manifest in ways that are not related to visual imagery. Additionally, even though I said it in the video I want to reiterate that imaginatio...

No, that individual learns differently. Unfortunately many schools or teachers never notice those who absorb mathematics differently, I know because I fall into that category and until I met a teacher who helped me understand math better. I went from struggling to stumble through basic algebra to getting a B+ on a calculus exam, something I thought I would never be capable of, but I did. It’s not anxiety over math that some suffer from, it’s poor outdated concepts and instruction.

That sounds like a personal experience that doesn’t negate any of what this clip says. You can (for a variety of reasons) have trouble with learning math as it’s taught to you, or you can have anxiety, or both (or neither). Experiences will vary!
