In this SEAMSIDE conversation, Russell and I explore: ① how he balances the tension of empty space and maximalism ② why the arc of creative exploration is longer than long ③ how we can use our quilts to say things words don’t touch Russell James Barratt and his wildly joyful quilts make me want to lasso the UK and bring our two countries closer together. His work is loud and colorful, his demea...

It’s been a year since Coulter Fussell and I first chatted here on SEAMSIDE. In that conversation, we talked about the South and family history, the role of community in her work, and how she maintains hope in the face of conflict. You can find that first conversation, HOW TO WORK WITH WHAT YOU’VE GOT, in your podcast feed in March 2023. In this new SEAMSIDE conversation, Coulter and I reconnec...

HOW TO PUT ON A SHOW with quilt curator Marin Hanson
🙋overthinker here! I’m really looking forward to this. Quilt Race was great for making quick decisions, but I need more help. I’m spending too much time considering options and not enough time getting it done.
I love that you’re excited about a piece of beautiful linen with symmetrical water stains! It IS beautiful!!
But if people are involved, politics are involved. Politics means people
Happy accidents ❤
Absolutely amazing weave. I love linen sooo much
Love how ethereal this looks. Last year I embroidered a flag for a local exhibition here in France and your video reminds me of how deep of a meaning it can hold
Jude and her work have been dear to me, too, for a very long time.
Such a great conversation! Learned several new things about slavery.... having to wear light colored clothing so the master could keep track of his "property".... Imagining myself on the auction block (I'm in my seventies).....So glad you are going to France, Beverly, to that quilt show. I listened to a podcast with 2 of the curators of that exhibition. Sounds like it would be a wonderful trip!
Yeah, Beverly is a wealth of information !
Loved this Zak! I can see what drew you to teaching. I enjoyed the calm, clear instructions and will be checking out more of your work and videos. The Quilty Nook also sounds like such a great resource, especially for someone who is new to hand quilting. Thanks again❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
OMG! I just saw a video of Judy's work from the Festival of Quilts in England and am now listening to your interview. I was wowed and truly blown away with her fantastic work. I cannot say enough about how her work touched me so much. I love how I am listening to your interview the very next day after seeing her work......
Loved the quick video! Easy to follow, right to the point, and wasn't drug out. Thank you! I think I like this stich. Love and light to all.
I'm so glad to have found your tutorials! I am VERY new to quilting and work as a Hospice chaplain. I have been wanting to make tiny prayer quilts for patients/families/staff who might like to have one. Thank you!
Omg you're so sweet for this, grief is hard but a littke compassion goes such a long way ❤
This was such a great pod cast. Thanks so much!
Love, love, love this talk!
Beautiful ❤❤❤
Dear Zak, I ‘sew’ enjoyed this little tutorial. Thank you so much for releasing it into the world : )
So happy I found you on you tube, I am a rural NC girl and love quilting using used clothing, you are such an inspiration to the sewing community, today was my first day watching and enjoyed it tremendously, thanks
Love your positive vibe!
you always ask questions that elicit what feels truest about the work
Loving the conversation about sampling. There is something so special about how quilting is so "generational" where makers make for other family members, maybe out of worn and unworn scraps, with visual ideas shared from makers before.
Thanks Zak, the tiny quilts and your demeanor are delightful 🥰
I love how you can almost feel the fabric textures in this video.
Amazing!
Much as I love this podcast I was looking forward to seeing the quilts. Am I such a technotard that I can’t find the images?
hi bonney! you can find them on the "Episode Website" linked in the shownotes, and with newer epsiodes (this one included) you can find them if you look down at your phone while it's playing. hope that helps!
I really liked “seeing the hand of the quilter” aspect of your discussion. You have given me permission to add on after thinking a project is finished. I’m very much on a Zak Foster field trip right now watching and listening to SeamSide and Soft Bulk. I share your videos with friends and the Southern White Amnesia series has sparked some discussions. Also, the burial/funeral/memory quilts have prompted me to open discussion with a friend whose husband’s Hawaiiana shirts still hang in her closet after 4 years of mourning. Thank you.
Hi may.I correct you it’s a prick stitch , basting stitches are longer and usually temporary x
A particularly good video/lesson. Thanks so much!
That’s Cool!
Love these!❤
HELPING I have one ... I think I see what you're doing. THANK U
“Pin, thank you for your service” love it!
You are a godsend to many sewers don’t pay attention to. Small is great!
I am 82, but as a young mother, didn’t have $$ for gifts and or postage to send relatives meaningful gifts. On visiting mother, found none of my treasures hand sewn items had been saved. Sister tossed them, maybe mom did as well. Sad. Still hurts.
Hi Zak, Love Seamside and Soft Bulk. I'm near Toronto. We frequently take road trips from Toronto to Florida. I'd love to plot a course on our travels to thrift shops along the way to look for old quilts. Can you recommend a few stops for us? Thank you, Sandra
Go for it! The best ones are the ones you'll find along the way <3
Also you can’t be guaranteed there are quilts in all the time. It’s pot luck at the thrift stores. Being a regular you are more likely to spot them.
Thank you Zac. I'm sitting a long way away in a rainy grey morning in Australia, moved and grateful.
Thanks for showing how to do this. It's sew great. Finding time to make a whole human sized quilt can be challenging for some of us and I'm one of them. This will help me get at it without feeling like I won't be able to actually finish a people sized one in my life time. 🙂
never say never !
Hi Zak, I have to agree with a couple of the other comments you are the Bob Ross of sewing/quilting, your smooth voice is perfect for teaching.
It is wonderful to see you do your work and suggestions. I can see other kinds of quilt patterns. Or a blind stitch…hmmm
@@donnadees1971 UM ok, but I didn't make this video.
The closer and the more overquilting lines, the less warm the quilt will be.
How it makes me feel: (1) I shrink in horror from quilts that have multiple sharky "teeth" pointed points, even if they supposedly represent flowers. I can't relax and sleep under such an object, (2) I feel sorry for the quilters who have to make, like 50 or 85, of the same block design to complete a quilt. I don't feel that individual deserved to waste a week or more of their life cutting and sewing the same block over and over, such mind numbing work. My empathy for them disallows me to enjoy such a quilt. 😅
awesome
Thank you so much! I have tried to learn this for forever. Watched your video, grabbed a thread and needle, and success!❤🎉
What is the purpose of the basting stitch?
OMG so ingenious ... looking for a stool 😊😮
Dang Zak. You are a very compelling storyteller. Stories that need to be told… but mostly that need hearing.
Yes..Great Grandmother Foster. From Pennsylvania.
Arab here wondering wtf is wrong with white American savior complex and virtue signaling
Your friend looks so cozy and happy to be burrito-ed!
Thanks for this. I like making small things a lot of time cause I can see the finished results quicker and I still get to stitch😂I bought one from you last year or so enjoyed watching your process.
