Me and My Passions: Biking, Camping, Nature, and getting Outside.
Here I will share with you my love for biking, bike packing/camping, bike commuting, and what gear and knowledge you'll need on your journey. I'll do as many reviews as I can on items I've bought and things that I've learned over the years.
I'm a bike commuter throughout the year and get the gear I need to make sure I can commute no matter the weather. Here in North Texas, that means carrying gear for 4 seasons on every ride.

Pedaling Through the Powder: Texas' First Snow of 2025
Просмотров 156День назад
Went for a ride on the Checkpoint in our first snow here in Dallas. It was fun until you hit the footprints, and the bike just twisted and turned. The Bontrager Girona RSLs did amazing work nit spinning out, but the sidewalls gripped really well and made it difficult to keep the bike straight. I burned 10 billion calories riding through this mess, but it was fun.

How to remove your rear bike wheel

A quick few steps can help you remove your rear wheel smoothly and without issues. The best thing to do is to shift your rear and front gear down into the smallest gear to make it a lot easier.

Pretty!
Thanks Buddy!! Hope yall are doing well! Miss ya!
Congratulations on the new position, man! That is awsome.
Thank you, Sir! Hope you're doing well!
Congrats on 10K ! I just got a Checkpoint SL6 2 months ago and have been looking for (and finally ordered) racks and bags to go Bikepacking in the spring. I also have a Domane and have to say the Checkpoint rides a lot like it does. The roadie has been on several DeathRides (Tahoe Area) and I love it. Gonna check out more of your vids as RUclips sent me your way via your Checkpoint all Bagged out to the max 45 second video.
Thanks for watching and congratulations on the awesome bike! There are so many options out there for setups and this bike allows many types. I hope it brings you many happy miles and adventures. Awesome, more videos to come soon!
Did you buy them separately? Cause they are selling the isthmus outer jacket only on their website no 3 in 1
Thanks for watching, nope it's the 3 in 1. It all comes together.
Hey are you still riding your Emonda SL 6! I ended up buying the same one, including colour, that you have based on the videos you posted! I also just bought a checkpoint ALR 5 so looking forward to all the possibilities riding that
Sure am! Love it! That's awesome, it's a great bike. The ALR is an amazing machine, you're going to have fun with that one.
Tour Divide! Awesome news man. Congrats on the new job too. Working from home...Welcome to my world :) I'm looking froward to all the new content and your take on the Tour Divide. You riding today? Just above freezing here in norhwestern Ontario and gettting messy as stuff melts a bit. I'll likely ride later today regardless though.
Thanks for watching, Sir! Thank you, yes it is different to not be in the bike shop. Yes, I'm going to document the getting ready till mile 2700 of the ride(crossing fingers I can complete it). I rode today and it was nice save for the wet roads and thick fog. But still beautiful. Yes, just saw you drop another video of the crazy rodes yall do up there in the winter wonderland. Keep it up!
I’m part of the tire dragging club, Dallas Dirt Runners! I’ve done the same route you did, from Irving to Trinity Groves and back to Irving several times riding and a couple times running! Nice video.
Awesome!! It's such a great system. So happy the cities are expanding this system for us to be able to see more our city. Thanks for watching!!
is it windproof?
Outershell os pretty thick. You can cinch up the bottom, so I guess you could close it off enough to block out a lot of wind
@@JakebMiller thanks mate. can it do subzeros?
@jothugs I haven't tested that but I don't think this would. The lowest I'd probably wear this would be maybe the low 20s
@@JakebMiller that's a shame. tnx again
Welcome
Notice any difference after the new tire? I read that the gr1 has the Highest rolling resistance of all the major gravel tires.
I can agree with that. I do feel more grip in loose surfaces, but they are so much smoother on rough terrain
Looks like you had a great trip Jake. I'll definitely put Eisenhower park on my list for bike camping next year. I'll have my '92 Trek 930 built up by then. Congratulations on your new position at Trek. I wish you all the best on this new chapter of your life. Take care.
Thank you for watching!! It was an amazing trip and it is a nice park to enjoy some peace and quiet. That'll be an awesome rig for that trip. Thank you!
What kind of soap do you use? Will this also work on Matt frames? How long does it need to dry?
Thanks for watching! I just used Dawn. it doesn't have to be anything special. You can wrap matte paint, there is even matte vinyl you can use. As soon as you smooth out the water from underneath it, it's dry. The moisture will evaporate in a day or so.
I never tried it but I want to protect my precious bike!
@CDGZZ I'm about to re-do the one on this bike, it's about time for an update. So I'll get to see how we'll this wrap did.
You said medium. Is that the .5L one? I see a .3 .5 and 1.0 on the website
Thanks for watching, and yes.
I had no idea this was on RSO lable?
Pretty clouds at the end
Maybe it's the ZV-1 issue? I have a crazy electronic/buzzing noise, with hollyland wireless microphone and an unusable audio. Any fix?
I had to play with the gain on the camera and balance it with the Rode mics. Had to do a lot of testing to get it right
Thank you for the video, this was great!
More than welcome
Wanted to ask since I can't find it can you by chance link or put the full name of your helmet light?
Since I have the light mount on it, it's probably my Bontrager Circuit. It's going away, but we have the Trek version out now. www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/equipment/bike-accessories/bike-helmets/road-bike-helmets/mens-road-bike-helmets/trek-circuit-wavecel-helmet/p/40249/?colorCode=white_tan
@@JakebMiller appreciate it!
More that welcome! Thanks for watching
By chance do you have a video on how to do this process along with removing the rear wheel on the checkpoint? My local trek store is closing and their other store is 40 miles away. I don’t want to have to drive that far if I can do it myself. I used to watch the mechanic at the store that’s closing but don’t feel confident going off memory in removing the rear wheel. Im probably over thinking it for sure but I don’t want to mess up something lol
@buckshotstv I'll produce one for ya and send it to you.
@@JakebMiller that would be amazing! Thank you!
I have a video releasing today for you! Enjoy!
@@JakebMiller awesome thank you!
i'm just curious how tall are you and what size did you get ? How do you find the geometry ?
Thanks for watching! I'm 5'9" and both my bikes are 54cm. On the Trek site, on each bike, there is a sizing tab. That'll show you size fits you best, but it's better to get on a bike to really confirm the size that works for you
❤
Whats the front bag brand?
Thanks for watching! That's the RouteWerks handlebar bag
not sure how i got here but cool to see someone else with a heavily used checkpoint. halfway to 10,000 on my checkpoint ALR 5! they are great bikes :). love your brief stint with stickers coverage!
Thanks for watching!! That's awesome. I love the ALR! Keep going and enjoy that ride!
That was a cool video.
Thank you sir!!
Congratulations Jake with the awesome bike “The Texas Locomotive”!!🎉 I have the same one and am very happy with it. Keep on riding 👍🏼
Thanks for watching!! It's such an awesome ride! Enjoy yours and be safe out there
Back roads of Texas, great ways
Thank you for watching, yes they are. Oklahoma, didn't do bad either
Whats the computer mount your using ?
It's the k-edge stem mount.
You just put your address on the box
Yeah, don't think too many people will come knocking. Crossing fingers
@@JakebMiller i hope not! Stay safe 😅
@@keegsterdraws614 thanks!
Hey Jake, any updates on the review of the RSL 37s? Would like to hear your thoughts on them.
Thanks for watching. Yes, coming soon!
Looks like it was a great ride Jake. I'll have to check out the route.
Celina has to be the funniest routes. It has a mix of everything
Ahhhhhh, before it was ruined by Disney
Lucas messed with it waaaay before he sold to Disney.
@JakebMiller He messed with it, but did not kill it.
I bought some of these tires about a month ago. I really like them, they are so quick on the road for a 42mm tire and handle the hardpack and even some light sand very well. I have enjoyed them so much, I bought some of the 35's for another wheelset for when I do a majority road. I was riding the Pirelli Gavel H, but I do likes these better.
Thanks for watching!! They are really awesome tires!
I put these on my Checkpoint. They are some nice riding tires
I think I'd rather cycle my 18km to work in rain (light enough anyway) than a strong headwind the whole way....maybe that's just me tho 🤔
Agreed! Headwind is the devil! Thanks for watching!
Think I will upgrade the handlebars to carbon for a smoother ride.. thoughts?
Thanks for watching, I've had my carbon bars on for a month now, and I love them! I even have the RSL carbon stem, makes for a smoother ride.
I have an Sl6 emondo. I think its 2021. I live in a very hilly area and am running 28 teeth in the back. would you recommend 32 or 34 for the back gearing? IF so which one and do i need to change out anything other than the chain when i change the cassette? New to riding so anything helps.
Yes, large gear in the back would help a ton! Shimano has the 105 r7000 11 speed 32t that would work. Another huge help for climbing is lighter weight wheels, the lighter you can get those, the easier it is to climb.
does it fit an iphone pro max?
The large is pretty large but, it's not long, so I don't know if that would fit. If there is a store near you, pop in and test it.
@@JakebMiller ty
You're welcome and thank you for watching!
that is 10/10 painting
Thank you! I downgraded just to get this color setup! Thanks for watching!
@@JakebMillerPut some protecting foil between straps from the bag and frame please
@Wlodek1410 I have protective film on the frame
Nice bike
Thank you, and thanks for watching
This vlog makes me want a bicycle. I'm becoming more of a Trek Checkpoint fan.
Love to hear that. If you have natural areas near you and really enjoy the outdoors, it is an awesome way to explore. Thanks for watching!
You should redo this video and increase the sound volume.
Yeah this one I was still learning audio, but I guess it is time for an update. Thanks for watching
Maybe there's hope for Dallas afterall. I live in the Love Field area, so all I see is carmageddon.
Almost all of the cities are trying to make bike paths connect thru out the meteoplex. Dallas is a bike city, there's just way too many major roads that have been in place for decades, that make it hard to get around on a bike in Dallas.
@@JakebMiller Yeah, they've been talking about a bike trail plan since 2012. I went to one of the meetings in 2023 and have been getting emails about the bond package and plans to build new infrastructure. Even on Lemmon Ave they've started building a bike/walking trail in the rich section of Bluffview.
@oldbrokenhands we'll win in the near future!
Congrats. Did you use the original wheels or swap them for another wheelset?
I upgraded wheels to the Pro 3Vs about 7 months after getting the bike. Made a major difference!
@@JakebMiller Thanks for the reply. I am considering a 2023 Checkpoint ALR 5 for touring and gravel riding and thinking I might swap out the OEM wheels(Bontrager Paradigm SL 24h) for something else. Just not sure what yet.
Sweet ride! You could get the new Aeolus 37, they would be so awesome on that bike.
thank you for this video, it's very helpful,....but where did you get those stickers up in the front? it looks amazing!
Thanks for watching! I found them on Amazon
How much soap do you put in your "water bath" for the film? Dish soap?
Thanks for watching! I'd say maybe half a soda cap full. You don't need a lot.
Cool paint job and overall bike, smooth...
Thank you, and thank you for watching!
Do you think the Emonda is also a good bike for long trips?
More than 100 miles, you'll not really love it. But if you build it comfy, you'll be alright.
@@JakebMiller Thank you!
More than welcome, good luck on your bike purchase
Thanks. Any advice on mounting a variable with Blender mounts? Is that in the works?
Haven't heard of anything yet. Did have someone come in the other day that found some guy that 3d prints a mount.
I'd love to have the ones your taking off. don't trow them away, someone wants them.
The pro 3vs, are going back on the Checkpoint.
I’ve lived in south Irving and have no idea what trail you’re on unless it’s campion
Lived for 25 years
I think you wouddbe reached downtown Dallas faster on Irving blvd
Yes, it's the south portion of the Campion trail, and yes, you could if you wanted to deal with traffic.
Great review. I can feel your joy. I'm shopping for my first all carbon road bike also. ENJOY!!!
Thank you, Rick! I've got about 3700 miles on it now and love it. I'm about to get new wheels to have even more fun on it. Awesome, good luck!
