Harman's Cross - Building a Purbeck Station
😊
Remember some of these people when I lived and helped out on Swanage Railway in the cafe which I have heard is at Cofe Castle just wonder if Chris is still working there and Matt the cafe used to be in 2 places in Swanage Station
I would have thought it would be in the interest of the County Council and the Swanage Railway to have the Swanage Railway services connect with the mainline at Swanage. It should be possible to travel by train from Bournemouth and change at Wareham for services to Swanage. It is a shame that BR closed the branch line to Swanage. Anyone staying in Bournemouth for holiday break and wanting to use public transport to get to Swanage the railway should be the most logical choice?
Please know that the American preservationists have your back.
I and my wife attempted to visit the railway a few years ago. I advance booked a hotel in Corfe Castle but by the time we arrived the railway was closed. I need to try again.
Thanks for sharing this - sorry to hear things are still are struggle, I and my family will be coming later this month to make a point of visiting!
I have unfortunately never visited your railway. Next time I am in the UK, I will definately visit.
Thank you for an excellent update glad to hear you andcthe camera operator are better. Yes its dad that the wareham service is not going to continue however there is always the option to do it again in the future and the achievement itself is fantastic. Your events have been great to watch and we all look forward to combining our visit to corfe castle with a trip to swanage during the summer to enjoy the best part of the isle of Purbeck.
well done. Keep going, things will work out for you all.
Given that the problems that beset your trials have largely passed, would it not be worth continuing to get your open access license? Surely volunteer operation of already fitted stock has potential? Is insurance really that much of a deal breaker? I’m not a member just an admirer of your superb line.
Excellent presentation. I hope the fundraising goes well.
No heritage railway, (especially this one) shall ever be overlooked, for whom all heritage railways are a vital yet crucial part of the united kingdom's tourism trade & preservation movement in need of recreation of how rail travel use to be. So let's keep on supportively backing their campaign, as well as every other heritage railway and their respective campaigns, and show the loving care for them all.
10 out of 10, for this brilliantly most excellently well produced video, Also a superbly informative, yet ever so insightful second video in the swanage railway's ''save your railway'' campaign that I myself continuously back with my support in hopefully seeing this captivating west country heritage railway overcome alll the costly odds in surviving thus thriving all the way, The swanage railway is on my bucket list, for whom I myself look forward to travelling from here in west yorkshire... to hopefully visiting, as well as ride along the purbeck line out there someday, I'm impressed with this video, especially for featuring some of their previous eventful gala successes & plenty of highlights of the 2024 season in-between, During this video, It was said that they'd be looking into potentially opening a new station (or two) along their line... which I've learn't whose passenger train riding length is as far as just before the frome river bridge north of nordon out there.... I wonder if the swanage railway could look into quite potentially considering a 'blue pool' halt out there, to serve nearby blue pool (north of nordon) someday, I really do hope this superbly wonderous branch line heritage railway forever survives, as well as continuously thrives... for whom this is indeed the most integral, forever much-needed jewel in the crown of the purbeck corner of the county of dorset out there. Jolly well done on this video, I myself continuously most gratefully supportively back this video, even the 'save your railway' campaign in need of all our loving support.
Where is Part 2
Great video Great railway.
Amazing amazing
Truly a thing of beauty, I cannot wait to come back and see the SE&CR loco!
I fear that a few minor railways will have to fold, Everything needs money, but family are struggling
Delighted to have popped the fund £100 and the SR gets £25 from the tax-man, which is even better! Keep up the great work everyone.
Covid lockdowns were stupid. Caused more problems than it solved. The bureaucratic red tape to build a carriage shed is inexcusable. It would be ashamed if these two reasons kill a hertiage line. If I lived in the UK, I would be there to visit it or volunteer. Bill from California
I think Swanage Railway need to sort out contracts for the carriage shed. I’d like to know what’s going on with it.
Red, green, white tie...it looks like my Rickmansworth Grammar School 6th form tie. 1966/7.
I have never visited the Swanage railway before, but as a past employee and continued volunteer at the Llangollen railway, 2021 was a difficult time for us but we are on the mend and defiantly on the right track for a positive future. I wish you the best of luck in your appeal and I hope to visit in the future.
I like what the gent said, “they like people” … that’s it … that’s what it’s all about people enjoying being with other people
Oh how awful that this has happened… so important that it’s kept open
A beautiful part of the country and a great day out. This line will survive, why! Because all those involved in this heritage line it's a labour of love.
I love going on your line when I visit Dorset. Plus for anyone who hasn't visited Swanage in Dorset its possible the best way to travel to the seaside town or Corfe and its Castle. As a volunteer of another heritage railway in the UK i know what you are going through and our line has now gone down to one steam hauled train, one diesel hauled train and recently reinstated a DMU service on normal running less busy weekend's.
I have enjoyed your railway and hope you flourish, God bless you.
Is there something fundamentally wrong with the preservation movement and the business models employed? I accept that there are exceptional circumstances impacting on not only the preservation movement but also the world as a whole. However it would appear to me that preservation movements repeatedly make appeals for the survival of railways etc and Frank Roberts said himself in this video that the Swanage has been here before, are there too many preserved railways getting too big or trying to do too much for a too small a market and chasing limited money available? I am all for preserved railways and support where I can but when we are repeatedly asked for more money then why should I give to the Swanage Railway rather than any other that has mark one coaches and yet another Bulied Pacific? I love Bullied Pacifics by the way. And if I give this time how long will it be before we are faced with yet another survival appeal? Please note that this comment is not a criticism so much as an observation and to ask what the future looks like for preserved railways? Thanks for reading this.
Swanage Railway is a fantastic historic railway, which I visited some 10 years ago. Definitely worth the trip and I hope it will survive through the ages.
What a railway it is my favourite railway which has my favourite steam train 34028 Eddystone i wish the railway a safe future hope it can carry on running making smiles on enthusiast and visitors this railway will always be in my heart I wish I could ride it every day this railway has lovely viewing points like corfe castle and ur amazing class 33s and steam trains I wish the railway all the best ur regards that real machine guy : hope I can one day blow the whistle of 34028
I hope it does survive
Thanks very much Josh and team. I do wish you success with your appeals for supporting funds. Clearly you have some very photogenic trains running through lovely countryside. But gradually falling passenger numbers sounds like a challenge that may ultimately change the nature of how you can continue to operate as a viable concern.
Greetings from Aus 🇦🇺 from a train lover who used to holiday in Swanage as a kid. I've been worrying about the survival of the UK's beloved heritage railways while reading about the economic state of the UK for some time and will be donating 👍🧡
One of the most wonderful preserved lines - a Premier League operation, if you will. Very sorry to hear it's struggling so much. Will make a point of visiting, and taking out a membership. Fight on - lots of support for you.
The diesel train next to the crane at norden station does it pull carages or not?
Steam train 😊
In the 50,s(!) I used to attend a summer camp at Langton Matravers & we would take the Pines Express down the wonderful Hants & Dorset line to Wareham(wish more of this could be re-opened!) & then down to Swanage. The view of the castle from Corfe station is forever etched on my memory so great to see it again!
16:35 - DEER!
👍 Belle vidéo, la région traversée est vraiment agréable. Le grand plus est bien sûr la réouverture d'une ligne au service voyageurs. Ce n'est vraiment pas fréquent de nos jours. Amitiés de Belgique 🤗
563 should be able to venture out to the main line!
My son is special needs and he is overjoyed whenever a railroad track is rebuilt and used again it is one of his dreams and hopes that real soon other lines in Britain 🇬🇧 and North America 🇺🇸🇨🇦 that were abandoned and/or removed are rebuilt and used again. But he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality!
Fantastic video chaps, be good to come down to Swanage again soon!
They've done it!!!!
There are not many Victorian 4-4-0 locomotives in steam anymore, the T3 actually is the only one at the moment. Great work done to bring this engine back in steam, the T9 is next?
Well done to all involved 563 looks fantastic 😀😀😀😀😀
Mr. Adams would be so proud of one of his babies,is still active! The LSWR had so really impressive engines, but there are so few,in existence! The Southern should have had a museum collection, ala the ATSF,PRR,and the Southern[US],as it would have covered the history of steam, and with a few extra attractions! Mr. Drummond's Bug would have been a show stopper! One can dream, but there is a small note, the LSWR had,in its heyday, two engines, having the wheel arrangement as its road number;one each,440,and 460,both Drummond productions! Thank God that was caught on film otherwise no one would believe it! Your work is excellent and that T3 is a thing of beauty! And the front overhang, would do justice to an SD40-2,so there was a prototype!! Thank you 😇 😊!
In the Railway Magazine '47 0r '48.
I remember a nice colour plate of it with a restored LSWR carriage (in salmon pink) for 1947/8. I have wondered what became of it. I guess the coach did not survive.
Hope when s15, 499 is completed to LSWR, condition. The two can meet on the Swanage railway. Now that would be good to see.
I’m glad to see you put it/kept it in the LSWR Mint and Chocolate livery. It’s a nice colour scheme that not very many locos have been preserved in. I don’t think many other locos from the National Collection should be brought to steam. We could lose authenticity during rebuilds, classic liveries could be lost and the number of static exhibits could rapidly decrease.
