Everything is an AI Agent, and they’re coming for our software jobs
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.14 дней назад
What makes AI so good at writing software? Why is it hard to distinguish what a real AI Agent is? How can we, as software engineers, prepare for the future? How can we responsibly develop new agents and agentic systems?
I no longer welcome AI replacing me, I fear it
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.21 день назад
What can we really expect “work” to look like in a post AI world? AI is rapidly changing how we do software engineering. AI is incredible at things like software generation, math, technical writing … but can we expect it to understand what humans find “interesting”? Will governments help us create a future where humans of all classes and AI can live together equitably and with dignity?

Now is the time to unionize if you are in the tech industry. The government doesn't have a plan for how to handle this, so we are forced to buy time by unionizing to keep AI from replacing employees. You don't want to wait until AI is at the stage that it can replace you or it's too late, you want to unionize now. We are already seeing layoffs by Meta and Salesforce so that they can replace workers with AI, as AI becomes more capable year after year, this is going to become more common. We need to buy ourselves time and unionize now. This would also send a message to the government that they need to come up with a plan for how they will handle the transition towards an AI driven economy where AI performs most of the labor.

  • @BruceWayne15325

I'm in the same boat. I think it''s important for us to realize though, it's not AI we fear, but the governments refusal to plan ahead for how to handle these scenarios and how they might screw us in the process. I don't think that upskilling is the answer, at best that will buy you a couple of years. AI is going to continue to improve until it surpasses humanity in every way. How do you upscale beyond ASI's ability to replace you? You can't. That's just a myth that the tech industry is spinning to prevent the governments from shutting them down. So what can we do? Right now, you have a golden opportunity. AI is a force multiplier, and you don't need a company to make software. I recommend staying employed as long as you can, but in your off hours create your own software and sell it. Right now is the best chance you will ever have to make money with selling your own software. Once AGI is freely available everyone and their pet dog will be creating software and our salaries will be toast and our ability to sell software will decline. But for now, we're golden. Make that money now and as fast as you can. I'd also recommend taking political action. Contact your senator and tell them about the problem and give them suggested solutions. Form a labor union while AI still can't fully replace programmers and put pressure on the companies to not replace humans with AI. This will work until AGI is fully realized and fully able to replace human workers, but it should buy you some years. Remember, everyone in the industry is in the same boat. We are not alone in this, and together we can force the government to act.

What is a processor? The fastest arithmetic-logical unit (the BTC era caused faster graphics cards to appear; no matter). AI speaks the language of a computer at the lowest level, so its OBVIOUS that its the easiest to program (its arithmetic and logical). What is a pseudo-quantum processor? Still the same, only with a complexity between 0 and 1, so also just a matter of time. And a strange paradox- do programmers not understand WHAT A COMPUTER and AI ARE??? How else to explain the belief that AI will not replace them??? The CPU and AI speak the SAME LANGUAGE! But not all of them... max 99%. Ciaooo... :)

that will not happen. you sound like you dont understand what scope is in a project and how much of a system you have to understand to fix just a minor bug. this is difficult for AI to accomplish because of the multi-modal nature of how software is engaged and the specific user feedback that must be used to fix it. i dont know about you "code tour" but chatgpt has never fixed a bug in its own code let alone created a complicated enough solution to also then fix. it always screws that up and will always screw that up for a long long time. the context problem is real and you have done a surface level amount of research into the faults of AI. sad to see your video being parroted as if companies didnt just fill in roles they never intended to hire for. thats not you losing a job thats the company losing expertise. software is as human as it is robotic and there can never be a middleman like you think.

Tech is betting big that AI can greatly reduce the need for human labor in many areas, most of all coding. AI is trained on boat loads of software so it can put out some really good looking solutions. But applying that generation to very large code bases is the wild west, and we have no idea how many humans if any it will take to help guide the AI. Even the best AI models still have serious flaws when it comes to reproducing human like general logic and problem solving ability. And like you said the best ones right now are power hungry. AI will hit the iceburg of hidden complexity- most people's jobs look fairly easy on the surface to automate- but it's that 90% that is hidden away below the surface that the AI's will fail at, because so much of it is informal and implicit, rather than structured and explicit. A good example is AI Art. On paper Artists are toast because we now have these machines that can create amazing art- which is true. But it turns out that being an Artist in many scenarios is more complicated than just making pretty pictures- they also have to understand a clients or Art directors brief- and more broadly understand the wider cultural context of that brief and how the Art they are making relates to the needs of the overall project. They have to be able to make progressive iterative changes to a design to respond to ongoing changes in that project- and ensure that the aesthetics of their work are consistent with the projects overall look and feel ect ect. I'm sure the same is true of programming- it's not just about code, but about many other things besides. So I would not be too concerned that AI is going to sweep us all away- the most likely scenario is that it will only really be useful to those who have the skills and understanding to make it useful- in the hands of the unskilled it will remain what it is now- a clever toy that is entertaining but not that useful.

Tried to set up some tests today with Cursor and Claude. What a pain! This is like guiding someone who knows the syntax but has like an IQ of 70. 1. I have a Google Chrome handler in my code that opens new tabs and stores information about them. It couldn't figure out that because we work with two separate node.js processes and we 'open' tab in one process but try to 'fetch' it in another, it fails because they each have separate app memory. 2. there was also a mismatch there between the 'key' we passed during opening of the tab and the one used later in retrieval. The mismatch was just because a variable was named a bit funky. A human would put some logs in to trace the issue, but the AI kept trying to guess and I had to stop it once again. What are you talking about when you say 'AI' is smarter than a human can ever hope to be? Do you have a particular model in mind? If so, let me put it in my Cursor because my today's AI session was such a waste.

Best thing to do is to coast by, and hold on tight until UBI comes. Luckily our current administration supports the idea, Trump said before he agrees we’ll eventually need a UBI as AI automates more and more jobs, and of course Trump is closely partnered with Elon Musk, and Musk is a BIG supporter of it. So I think there’s a good chance it’ll come, but we’ll have to hold on tight until then. I predict that we’ll get a UBI sometime within 2035 to 2040

It will be chaos in the short term, but once the dust settles(prob a few years), there will be so much productivity and flourishing. Robots will produce so much food that no one will go hungry, and raw materials and transport will be so cheap that building houses will be cheap and homelessness will be solved. You just need to survive the chaotic transition period and you'll live in a utopia.

In a normal world, that’s what would happen. But the world isn’t normal; it’s full of greedy billionaires who are never satisfied and always want more. And when they have more, they want power. It’s easier to rule over people when they are dependent on you, and that dependence comes from the need to pay bills and support their families. As a result, they are obedient and afraid to protest, so they don’t lose their jobs.

Is AI scaring you or is having to change your mindset? Humans don't react well to change however exponential change will require you to adapt or become obsolete. Yes it's going to get VERY competitive. The key is to leverage it's power to keep you in the loop, your creativity must be amplified by the AI itself. I run an AI consultation Agency, best believe i will adapt and pivot until i get that wireless neural upgrade in 10 years. I'm not going anywhere.

There is still a lot ai can not do. When ever you make a critical decision someone is responsible for the consequences, and that vil never be ai but the human making or accepting whatever ai produced or wants accepted. So when you put code into production some has to find out if a contract was broken or not. Developer jobs will evolve into a kind of reviewer job, and for a long time humans will need to understand what’s going on. Don’t be afraid and don’t stop being critical. Being critical is what’s it’s all about :)

Wrong assumption. The economy needs someone to produce and someone to buy. You mistakenly assume that both tasks have to be done by people.
