The Secret Inside One Million Checkboxes
My favorite story from One Million Checkboxes (onemillioncheckboxes.com) - a website of mine that became shockingly popular. It begins with me thinking I was hacked and ends with my crying some (very proud) tears due to some very talented teens.

Very inspiring! 🤗Thank you for explaining the background and what happened 🙏
Why must you be so fucking cringe?
Y'know, I tried messing around with the website while it still had global replication.. And I never had the idea of viewing all of the checkboxes in a single 1000x1000 image or, reading the ascii when converting from binary, I was simply too busy picking apart other websites (like a certain open-source Beat Saber leaderboard) to realize the full scope of what mass trolling was possible with a website consisting entirely of user-controllable checkboxes in a way to comprehend the fact that other like-minded people could do what I would have been able to help with or even do myself, if only I was up to the task of doing trolling, like the time I did some trolling with the "reward" page in Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, and found other like-minded people who had the same idea of building a custom client to access and manipulate the API in that same reward page!! In conclusion, Even like with the small number of people that had gotten to the reward in Getting Over It, there will always be someone who seeks to do technical trolling. Even if I had been able to stumble upon the exclusive group of box checkers, It wouldn't change the fact that it doesn't hurt to explore more things around you every day, to witness, and take part in technical trolling, and to create the means for trolling to happen in the first place. (And, thank you, Nolen, for creating One Million Checkboxes in the first place.)
Brilliant website and fascinating story!
re preventing abuse, I think you could also have gotten away with randomizing the checkboxes per row when they are rendered. I don't think many people would notice :)
Oh interesting! But not totally sure I agree - this would have made it harder for me to demo / a worse experience when you were showing someone else, and I could imagine some users noticing and feeling cheated? might be wrong about that though (and it’s def a cool idea - not trying to be dismissive!!)
@@itseieio Yeah, I understand what you mean -- it is a more invasive method. In low-player context, I can see it being much more noticeable (especially if they know eachother!!). Anyway, thanks for the video, always fun hearing others' thought process when making something cool like this :)
predictable
Script 10/10. Acting 10/10. Hand gestures 10/10. Fake smile 69/10. EDIT: what I’m trying to say is, be yourself, don’t exaggerate points or feelings, we see you, no need to raise your hand.
this is so cool
so cool
When is there going to be season 2 with 1 billion checkboxes
I had goosebumps, it's like getting a message from aliens, something you totally don't expect
I'm a software tester and I automated the checkboxes quickly with a javascript in the console, I even bypassed your front end limitations but it seems that although I was able to check 50 boxes per second the server didnt process them It was a well made project, easy concept and great execution
after watching the video im thinking the backend might have processed my checkboxes but other peoples bots might have just been undoing my work.. well, we'll never know :)
this makes me sad that comcast blocked the website when it was at its peak 😭
Give a man a switch, he'll flip it on a beat, with a million he'll make a masterpiece.
I showed all my coworkers your site when it launched and went viral, and we had fun checking in on it for a few weeks! Thanks for doing this and showing what happened behind the scenes!
Liked, subscribed, this gave me good chills.
6:22 NOITA MENTIONED 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I hope he didn’t assume someone would really check the boxes manually. 😅
i love this.
I loved this story!
Interesting note, because this is being done by the coordination of 50 people, it accurately reflects how resolution and artifacts works. A faster algorithm producing a lower res product.
Stanford version: Half the checkboxes could have been randomly red, the other half randomly blue. Behold the tribalism ensure...
Came here from OMCB. What a brilliant person you are.
really really liked your creativity
Is it too late to join the teens with making art? beucase i like art :)
I love the fact that the RUclips algorithm recommended me your video, even before Theo showed it to me. Even if it's a pretty small video, new channel, etc.
😅😁😂😁🤣🥲
Absolutely amazing! This made my day. So glad you shared this story with us:)
How much the host cost U 😅
Just come to say that you should definetly make more videos! I like clever programmers talking about their stuff, as I consider myself one of them, and I'm always open to see obscure ideas from other fellow programmers. Projects like this are more than someone fiddling around with some code, this is turned out to be a great social experiment in which I learned that the internet we grew up with and loved is not dead, we just need to summon the right audience with the right tools.
🤗
This is brilliant 😂😂😂😂 Is this coming out in July 2025?
lol sorry i was working on this and then released One Million Checkboxes and that went crazy and i stopped working on paccam. I'll get it out soon!
@@itseieio damn we need this ASAP!! although one million checkboxes was brilliant haha
I love “the internet can still be fun” I think it could be a cool thing to put in the description of your channel
i was just thinking this!!
Definitely make more videos! Love watching creators talk about the things they created and the experiences they had along the way.
sooooo good.
❤️❤️❤️
that is awesome! the fact they had gifs and even videos rendered on there, that is an engineering challenge! very intelligent kids 😄
Internet still rocks!
Awesome stuff.
i genuinely impressed by those teens!
Fascinating and highly entertaining🎉 as a junior dev your spirit is a piece of inspiration
OMG A D.O.N.G.
All boxes are checked 🫥
I love the organic, natural level design. Not being scared of going down to street level. Beautiful. Wish Catalyst looked like this.
Keep going.Didn’t start playing with programming until I started working in programming (early 30s). Still trying to find ways to not over complicate things, and here teens are able to find simple and brilliant solutions. 😂
we can use this to talk to aliens
Pls more video cause I like your websites and it shows that you can still do cool social experiments
Charles Arthur shared your story in his daily email this morning. It's blown my mind and, like you, left me with a great sense of optimism about the future. Thank you for sharing this amazing story.
This story is absolutely delightful. Thanks for making the site, and for sharing what it led to.
