What does the E stand for?

Maybe evolution or something U ever heard a d854.3 without the E? If not, look up „Gumble444 MAN NL223 New Ag“ it’s really different to the later introduced 854.3E as the 3E runs very different than the 3.

Can someone explain why reverse is so feeble and slow on these DIWA boxes? Even at 1:18 with no load on the output shaft it's slow and not even consistent. When driving buses in reverse with these gearboxes, the engine seems to be labouring hard at low speed whilst the vehicle barely moves. Not fun when you have to back-up almost a mile on a rural school run after encountering an unplanned road closure! What is it that makes it behave unlike a conventional (ZF/Allison...) gearbox?

When in reverse, only the torque converter of the Voith gearbox actually runs in reverse - the mechanical differential drivetrain still provides forward traction, making torque converter and mechanical gears "fight" against each other, taking up engine power. When the forces in the primary planetary differential get out of balance, e.g. by slamming the gas while in reverse, the bus will actually slow down or even jump forward because of that - although being in reverse.

@@Zahuuda Well, thanks for that explanation. The engine does seem to sound like it's working hard (and the older diesel engines chuck out black smoke) when under throttle backing up. So, effectively, reverse is basically the exact same operation as retarding, only continuing to turn the torque converter backwards after the vehicle has stopped, thus propelling the vehicle in the reverse direction? (Or, conversely, the retarder is effectively selecting "reverse" at high forward speeds and the resulting "weeeeeee" noise is those low ratio gears meshing at very high speeds). So why, if there are planetary gearsets within the gearbox, couldn't the gearbox operate like a conventional automatic in reverse? (i.e just "brake" the right combination of sun/planet/carrier) and run the torque converter the correct way? Surely this half-baked method of reversing isn't economical nor really practical and puts unnecessary wear on the transmission. Even city buses need to reverse from time to time...
