Instinct- That letter and that necklace, although they make a appearance for drama's sake, at least it was an attempt to close some chapters and move the F on. It's also funny how Lois tells Clark to try wild cherry and look who showed up, she was wild alright. I remember Maxima first from Superman the Animated Series firstly. It could be poised as a filler episode, but plenty of things happen to still make it part of the season long story line. 7 out of 10.
Toxic- Sing it Brittany! With a taste of your lips, I'm on a ride You're toxic, I'm slippin' under With a taste of a poison paradise I'm addicted to you Don't you know that you're toxic? And I love what you do Don't you know that you're toxic? Back to the episode at hand. Justin Hartley as a main character and boom already getting the full backstory treatment. Not even Jimmy got that and he's been around since season 6. This episode was like watching Castaway, just quicker. I know they're on a budget and all, but 2 years on an island and he never grew facial hair or his hair never got longer? A wig and a glue on beard would've done wonders, but I can over look it because it was the Oliver Queen story. I like the fact that Tess does know him, this way there's a link, a thread through all our main players. Like 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, without that many degrees. Chloe's ability on full display. Brainiac aside, she could be like Data from TNG. Oliver and Tess ending badly makes sense, it's like they were Toxic for each other. 8 out of 10 shields. The special features on the DVD and I assume Blu Ray on the last disc tells the full history of the Green Arrow character that I found very interesting. I don't think it shows scenes from the later part of this season for spoilers for you. After the finale I'd suggest giving it a watch.
Plastique- I know it's not technically the first episode of Season 8, but since usually the actual first episode ties up the previous season, Plastique is a great season opener even if it is episode 2. Upon meeting Tess, I think of a scene in Scream 3(I know random), the character Tyson says he is not a Randy substitute, he's his own character. Tess isn't a Lex replacement, she's her own character. We can all miss Lex, but truly his story arc was complete and after fully becoming the "villain of the story" he would've just been a mustache twirling bad guy. After Descent, there wasn't much farther to fall from grace. Davis Bloome is a very charismatic character brought to life by Sam Witwer. I personally never watched the new Battlestar Galactica(I grew up on the original because I'm just that old) but I did watch him in Being Human that only last 2 seasons. Funnily enough, he costars with Sam Huntington that played Jimmy Olsen in the Great, with a capital G, Superman Returns. Clark and Lois...errr, Lois and Clark finally getting their time to shine and really everything is being put into place for the final 3 seasons well so far. I think the way Clark found out that Chloe was engaged was pretty comical. As curious as the ending of the episode was, Smallville still has it's levity to balance out the coming darkness. I'm going high on this one to 7.5 shields out of 10.
Clark should've done a graveyard shift! Possibilities endless. Great show !
Whether or not the showrunners knew they were going 10 seasons, looking back now it really was the home stretch. Rightly so they titled this episode Odyssey. Looking it up for context, Odyssey is a long and eventful or adventurous journey or experience. That alone speaks to the final 3 seasons. We all now it's 10 seasons long and we've done 7 seasons. Setting sail for these final 3 will be a eventful and adventurous journey for sure. Smallville was always set up to be puberty with super powers as said so by it's creators, but it's time to grow up now. Looking back on my original ranking of the 10 seasons I did over on Durban's channel, I put Season 8 at the number 7 spot. Honestly now thinking about whats to come, I might have to re rank it higher. Starting off with the season opener, I'll agree it wasn't the most exciting of all the premieres, but it did it's job the move all of our ducks in a row. We can miss Lex and Michael Rosenbaum, but at the same time his story to villain was complete. Killing Lionel and his own innocence in his head, his story arc was finish as "the villain of the story." Welcome Tess Mercer played by the beautiful Cassidy Freeman. Justin Hartley moving up to series regular and they waste no time getting his back story in the episode Toxic. Season 8 starts the season long big bad, but since I come from Buffy, I'm used to the main villain of the season taking as much center stage as our hero. The part the Jake Collins refers to as being retconned is more of a reinterpretation of a part of the lore of the show. All the episodes might not him home, but they're starting to take those home run swings as we gear up for this, our final 3 season Odyssey. 7 out of 10 shields because I know what's to come and for what I forgot is coming too.
Thank you for having me on the show! Enjoyed the good discussion on Psycho 1998.
To this day, this is the only version I've ever seen.
Awesome video buddy and definitely agree and keep up the amazing incredible content
I was still funny going to a video store and swapping them out. And waiting to see if anyone rented the Michael Keaton version and goes home with the horror version lol.
I remember watching Jack Frost on vhs as a kid in my mother, confusing it for the Michael Keaton film
The 90's was quite the year for witches. From Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, to Pra ctical Magic and the Blair Witch Project. Along with Charmed and Sabrina the Teenage Witch on tv. As much as I love all of the aforementioned 90's films, it The Craft that rules them all. Fairuza Balk as Nancy is one those villains, that could seduce you to the darkside. Her walking on water scene was truly a stunning visual display of her power. This is the best movie about witches, hands down. On the flipside, the "legacy" sequel is garbage.
Definitely a guilty pleasure 🎃
The original novel was by H.G. Wells as a critique of vivisection in 1896.
Actually, the story for this is a whole lot better.
The ending and monologue by Thewlis at the end is one of the only good things to ever come out of this movie
David Thewlis and Fairuza Balk deserved better.
This movie is sooooo goofy and ridiculous.
The troubled making of the movie is definitely more interesting than the actual film.
One of the worst films of 1996 with one of the most troubled productions of all time.
A guilty pleasure despite it not being one of Wes Craven's best.
I liked the use of despondent in place of drunk. A politician would definitely spin it the same way. Definitely an underrated classic.
It's funny I had just watched sorta stupid's reaction to this before seeing that y'all posted this 🤣 🤣.
Definitely a guilty pleasure for me 😆😆😆
Great entertaining film. Seen this opening night back in the day. Produced by Spike Lee.
Billy zane is having so much fun in this movie and I remember one interview he described his take on the the character as if he was robi. Williams genie from Aladdin but he's from hell
Fight Club of course is excellent, I've only seen it once. It's *rough* viewing of course, with the brutality onscreen, but in no small part because of the brutality and seeing what humans are capable of, the film is a masterpiece. It definitely can be read as nihilistic, and it's certainly, as you say, a comment on toxic masculinity. As for The Straight Story, and on Richard Farnsworth filming while having terminal cancer. I don't know what to comment about something so astonishing other than to just say that man exemplified deep courage and dedication.
Thanks for sharing this
Another important movie for me from 1994. My friend Mike from high school was a big fan of this series and especially this particular book. I spent the night at his house once and he showed me he had, wrapped in plastic and bubble wrap, a 1st edition hard back novel of Interview with the Vampire. The movie itself is a visual stunning and probably the first time I ever really noticed film as something beautiful. In the 80's I was raised on Stallone and Arnold along with low budget horror movies. From the opening scene of the movie, hovering over the San Francisco Bay and hearing the creepy score and choir of children, I knew I was in for something entirely different. From start to finish this is a immersive experience. This for lack of a better word, in the words of Scorsese, is cinema. Still my favorite haunting quote from Louis as he and Claudia try to escape Lestat is "And all the while, I thought, Lestat you deserve your vengeance. You gave me the dark gift, and I delivered you into the hands of death for the second time." Kristen Dunst won for best breakthrough performance at the 1995 MTV Movie awards, back when they were still cool. I recently found out the River Phoenix was supposed to be the interviewer but passed away and that's where Christian Slater came in. Because it's a full experience for me, it's not super rewatchable and I have to be in a mood to see it. Still when I do, it's a glorious remember of how good this movie is and how good 1994 was.
This is a important movie for me, because it was my first Freddy film on the big screen. Since about 1988 I've been watching the Elm street series repeatedly. I was barely 14 when this movie came out, but I got in. Pre internet days, all we had were magazine articles on the subject and I read everything I could get my hands on for this film. It cemented my love for this franchise and I can't imagine my life as a horror fan without it.
I'd much rather watch Jennifer Aniston in Leprechaun, than Rene in Next Generation Chainsaw. Warwick Davis is the best part of every film in the series.
It's not the worst, but understandably not the best. Although ifyou ever binge watch the first 8, this one is a refreshing watch from the standard cat and mouse Jason stalking victim formula
No, it's definitely at least fun-bad, along with at least two others, one of which being BACK 2 THA hood-- THE SECOND TIME HE GOES THERE. I'm not gonna wave my whacker around in the name of this movie and sure as hell not the entire franchise-- but maybe at least KNOW the actual "lore" (such as it admittedly is) before going in on something-- there are TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT hood movies, and one of em is a lot more fun than the other. There's also the sequel with the family fun center and the go kart track where the guy's friend is a drunken ripoff artist that feels almost like a George Carlin type of dude-- that one, the better 'hood one, and this first one-- all solidly crazy and fun recommendations. People even seem to enjoy the others I don't, as well. An opinion is an opinion, but to actively discourage others because you didn't like it? Kinda wrong.
The kid was adorable/cool.
One of the worst films of 1993.
Not a great movie but it is a guilty pleasure.
Jennifer Anniston is embarrassed by this movie and I don’t blame her. Warwick Davis is fun tho
Leprechaun 3 is the only good leprechaun movie.
Sorry that "The Limey" didn't work for you. It's one of my favorite Soderbergh films, partly because the editing style is similar to the French film "Last Year at Marienbad" which was one of my dad's favorites. It may help to know that the movie's "present" is with Wilson on the plane headed back to England, and what we see and hear is his stream-of-conciousness thoughts about what's happened over the last few days...except that isn't completely true, as there are a number of scenes that he wasn't present for. The editing style is one that a person could either get into or not get into, and I got into it. Again, sorry that you didn't. My favorite scene is when Wilson is telling Elaine about finding out that his daughter had died. Up until this point, I believed that what I was seeing was different conversations that were cross-cut with each other--such as Wilson and Eddie talking in the car and in Eddie's backyard the first night they meet. But with the Wilson-Elaine scene, I realized that what Soderbergh had done was film the same dialogue in three separate locations and then cross-cut the three versions. One conversation between two people in three locations. I have no idea why Soderbergh chose to do it this way, but I really like it. Much like "Out Of Sight" and the scene with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez in the hotel bar. I also liked "Random Hearts", but mostly just the first part of the movie before Harrison Ford and Kristen Scott Thomas actually meet. The rest just wasn't as interesting to me...and hey! It seems that you felt the same way. Fun fact: One of the salespeople in the retail store where Ford goes to ask about Thomas' whereabouts is Brooke Smith, who played Buffalo Bill's abductee in "The Silence of the Lambs". She has the best line in the movie: "Either way, she's toast." You seem to have an issue with excessive dialogue scenes. Do you feel that the conversations in these movies don't move the story along?
Three Kings is pretty good and Witch's Ghost is entertaining.
👍👍💯
Burstin’ not Burrsteen
As a 2001 Gen Z kid who loves 90s films, I believe 1999 was a golden year for film.
Scooby Doo is GOLD.
I have seen the movie long time ago and my thought was. The title is false, nothing is happening . Watched some other films and i was like : This is the worst try hard ' director/actor ' ever. And i was confused about who gave this guy permission to publish it. But that is freedom i guess. Not everyone can make quality movies. Is this shamalan a parody in human form? I don't get his movies . Also no , that is a red flag on the tip of the iceberg .
Way back in the early 90's I remember getting a flyer in the mail about pay per view movies that were available for rent for the low low price of 99 cents. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of those movies. I watched it and immediately loved it. I'll be honest to say that I loved this movie so much I thought it was the show that would ruin the movie experience for me, so I swore it off for years until they started showing reruns on FX. I didn't actually start watching the show as it was going on until season 6. It has since become my favorite TV show of all time. The movie can stand alone or as a launching pad of a prequel of sorts. I still love the movie for all its worth. Kristy Swanson is a great Buffy and actually has an arc over the course of the film from selfish valley girl to embracing her calling in her own particular way of course. Even the season 1 season finale of the show mirrors the dance in the movie. Paul Rubens still has the greatest on screen death in the history of cinema! It gets a amazing grade from me!
We named one of our cats Clovis because of this movie
“Some of the most gorgeously refined garbage I have ever seen.” - Rob Walker
Definitely one of the weirdest Stephe King films ever made.
COP KEBAB😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great discussion! Now I’m definitely checking out War Dogs
Actually have never seen this one but solid review with Jacob.
