Art Horizon is a place of creativity and learning, where I share my 25 years of my own art journey and everything I've learned on my way. I hope to inspire others to make beautiful paintings through showing how everything in painting is logically interconnected and can be simplified to its essence.

Painting Rose, Part II
This is the second part of the Pink Rose painting video. I continue demonstrating a more abstract approach to painting, focusing on a single flow of light against the stability of shadow. From there, I find the petals within that flow by using cast shadows, cutting out petals with the background, and separating it with use of reflective light.
In this segment, I also discuss the use of reflective light and show how the background can be integrated by opening edges and sharing the color of my background with the vase and selected petals with the background color.
Even thought this might seem like a harder way to paint, I assure you with practice it gets easier. Painting without concrete dra...

Painting Pink Rose

This tutorial simplifies the challenge of painting multipetal flowers by focusing on a structural, painterly approach. Using the example of a single rose, I demonstrate how to balance the flow of light with the stability of shadows. You’ll learn how to sculpt and carve out petals in the light while suggesting petals in the shadows through the introduction of reflective lights. This method provi...

Let There Be Light

This is Part VI of my video series about painting light. In this demonstration, I continue exploring how to paint the flow of light as a single, unified shape and then carve or cut out details like leaves from it. This process shows how abstractly you can perceive light before shaping it into more descriptive forms. Be sure to watch the first three parts of this series to follow the full progre...
Let There Be Light, Edges Part III, Painting Demo

This is the third video in the Paint Light series, where I explore the importance of edges in depicting light. Just as light flows and changes, the edges that describe it must also sequentially change transitioning from hard to soft, found to lost. The quality of edges can greatly influence how light is perceived. Strong, hard edges convey intense light, while softer edges suggest the light get...

Light is an essential force in painting-a visual element so powerful that it shapes both form and narrative. In this video, I begin a deep dive into the subject of light in painting, focusing on how it interacts with form, with its contra-part shadow, and how light varies depending on texture, pattern, color, value of the surface it falls on. I’ll discuss how to paint light and how to make form...
Portrait Advice # 2

This clip is from my 3-hour portrait tutorial, where I cover essential tips for any painter: 1. Make brushstrokes and leave them as they are-don’t blend, smooth, or overwork them. Each stroke serves as a roadmap for the topography of the face, describing its forms. 2. Begin and end with strong shadows. Keep them solid; don’t lighten, don’t make them small and insignificant, or fracture them wit...

In this short video, I explain my approach to seeing the face as three parts: 1) forehead, 2) cheekbones and muzzle, and 3) chin and jaw, and how each differs in color and value. I also emphasize the importance of treating all shadow shapes-whether on the face or the clothing-as part of a single, unified shadow flow. This harmonizes the painting, allowing the shadows to read as one unit, more s...
Every Brush Stroke Matters, part II

This video is Part II of the series, following up on Part I, where we set the stage for light by painting all the shadow shapes and background. In this segment, I demonstrate how to paint the second layer on the most brightly lit object in my composition-the white and blue salt shaker. The key concept I explain is how to achieve the ultimate brightness and luminous quality. To do this, you need...
