    Viewing Mary as an eternal virgin is a Catholic teaching with no Biblical basis. The Bible clearly indicates that Jesus had many half-siblings conceived the normal marital way between Mary and Joseph. They had enough kids to have lost track of Jesus and they had to "turn the van around and go back" to the Synagogue after Shabbat and there's Jesus, only 12, teaching the Rabbis. Like any Jewish mother, Mary was annoyed because they wanted to beat the Bridge and Tunnel traffic back to Crown Heights and she'd had a brisket cooking since before Shabbat. Joseph was an avid bowler, but he didn't roll on Shabbos.

    • @plundbohm
      @plundbohm 2 месяца назад

      Great point. They go even further to declare Mary's virginity "in partu" meaning a virgin after birth. A midwife checked her out. The siblings of Jesus were half brothers and sisters from Joseph's first marriage and Joseph himself married as an old man and didn't desire Mary sexually. The virginity of Mary was a contentious topic in the early church and the bane of Catholic school girls for centuries.

    The shot of the bloody girls in the hallway always bothered me because the little girl in front looked so sexually exploited, on her back, with all that blood. Now that you mention it, I could see that as a castration image in the mind of a little boy. So many old religions fixated on castration, dismemberment, incest and rape in their myths, I could see Kubrick wanting to poke into these subjects. It bothers me, though. "What the hell is your mental problem?" is what this movie all boils down to, when you explore that level of meaning.

      The question that motivated my video was whether Kubrick used Freudian (and/or Jungian) theory to structure his movie. The question of whether those theories are correct or not is a different one, IMHO.

    You say Danny is "fantasy prone" I'd say he is highly imaginative, much like his parents. Jack is not emotionally detached. If he was emotionally detached he wouldn't have said "I better collect my family first" when Ullman tells him they're in a hurry. There is really no need for this line, or is there? Could it be to actively dismiss the notion that Jack is emotionally detached? Danny fears the hotel simply because it is unknown to him. Just as the viewer fears "the shining" simply because it is unknown to them. But there is one character to whom it is not unknown, and it doesn't scare him. Mind you, that character is a POC, and obviously /s to be viewed with suspicion. It could be voodoo [historically a horror trope reliant upon ignorance], of course.

    The opening sequence is fascinating. If you pay attention to when the names hit the centre of the screen. Nicholson's name lines up with the car, revealing the identity of the car's driver. Our protagonist. Or, as you suggest, maybe he's the man behind the consciousness. Caruthers' name appears as we pass what looks like an ambulance, presenting him as a possible hero. Barry Nelson appears as we enter the tunnel, is he telling Jack everything, or is he keeping him in the dark? Either way, it is Ulman who first introduces the viewer to the possibility that this is a horror film. Then it is Phillip Stone who greets us as we exit the darkness. But what of Shelley Duval? Her name appears as we swerve off-road. This could point to the fact that Wendy is "to blame" for the horrors that occur. But it could also point to the fact that Wendy was responsible for Jack's decision to stray from what he knows, and try something more risky. Like writing a horror story.

    • @happinesstan
      @happinesstan 4 месяца назад

      @@PsychiatricExile-channel I still retain my original interpretation of it, as a horror film, but I've since developed an interpretation of it as a Kubrick film. My first question is "Why would Kubrick make a horror film?" I've seen claims that he wasn't exactly a fan of the genre, and it is said that he was particularly mocking of King's previous work, but he "saw something" in The Shining. And so the question becomes what did he see? To which the answer, one would assume, is the vision he creates for the audience. Therefore we have to watch the film as Kubrick intended. We have to allow him to introduce us to every aspect of the story, not prejudice his work, with what we already understand from King's own work, or his review of the film. We really shouldn't even allow our own previous viewings to prejudice our interpretation. Because we've seen Jack commit these atrocities, and we will never be able to view him as anything but an evil monster. And yet, I strongly believe that Kubrick's main intention was to exploit the genre to reveal how there is no evil, to speak of. Fear is manifested in our own imagination. We are haunted by our own self. Which is fine, but our imaginations can be easily manipulated by wordsmiths such as King. Or expert directors such as Kubrick.

    • @happinesstan
      @happinesstan 4 месяца назад

      Throughout the film, Kubrick uses typical tricks of horror to convince the audience that there is something scary about the most innocent of things. Of course it helps that the audience are expecting a horror film.

I watched "Son of Saul" afterwards, to see a very different view of this same horror (both films use obfuscation, in a way what's not seen or barely seen makes it so much worse) from beyond the gate. May the world learn the lesson Glazer seems to be warning us, the danger of how complacency can become a form of madness and inhumanity.

    Have you watched or read Berserk? The first 41 volumes of the manga alone are enough for multiple topics. The original (1997) anime is different though since it's a standalone intrepretation of the story where its themes have a greater emphasis. The author Kentaro Miura edited each episode script and approved each change too. Either way, both mediums have potential for a video.
