    Not surprised that the elephant ear liked the heat -- we had them in San Antonio. And I'm jealous, because our clematis did really well this year, leaf-wise, but we got very few blooms.

    I have some Forsythia out front growing straight upward (8' tall), and while they're good for privacy, they look very strange. Gonna use some of these tips mixed with general pruning advice to get them growing outward. I like the way you explained everything, awesome attitude!

  • @VivSees

    Curious about what happened to the ones in the pot because you pruned them without any leaves left so how could they grow without leaves for photosynthesis?

    • @growingrealart
      @growingrealart Год назад

      Very insightful question! The ones in the pot grew back, though more slowly than the ones with more leaves still on them. Likely because, as you said, they lacked many leaves to provide additional energy. Once they regrew leaves they grew faster. Not all plants can handle such a hard prune, and normally I’d leave a leaf or two if I can to speed the recovery process. Great catch!

  • @gdp3rd
    @gdp3rd Год назад

    Is there a particular point/depth that you want to have the potting soil up to? Are the trees grafted, such that you want to cover the graft, or avoid doing so?

    • @growingrealart
      @growingrealart Год назад

      Great question! I defer to the planting instructions J&P provide because indeed they are sometimes grafted. Instructions I received for this rose were to bury the graft by 2 inches of soil.

    Thank you for this-it helped me understand it's a process! I am located in the Northeast and wondering how often I should be watering. Temperature is in the mid 70's. I may have overwatered a bit-but I am holding back, and hopefully it will be okay! I also noticed little white bugs on some of the leaves-I pruned those anyway, but any other suggestions? Thanks!

    • @growingrealart
      @growingrealart Год назад

      The little white bugs may be aphids-that’s something I see a lot where I am in Michigan. Pruning the leaves off may help. If you find they are damaging your plants, pulling them off can reduce numbers. Worst case, a spray with Bt toxin (harmful only to insects, and only those that eat the leaves) has helped me before. I am trying no spraying these days, though! Good luck and let me know how they’re doing 🥰

    I don't usually start from seeds -- my garden is mostly vegies. Last Saturday was the first outdoor Farmers' Market, and a beautiful day, but I was definitely not ready to buy plants. Mother's Day weekend is my "safe to transplant" date; I've only been burned once in all these years.

    Hey, I need new plant ideas for my containers, as a nearby tree is now making my patio much shadier. Have any fave shade lovers with nice color for the containers?

    • @growingrealart
      @growingrealart Год назад

      Now that is a fun question to answer!!! My go-to for easy shade color would be huechera aka coral bells. They come in all sorts of color leaves and since it’s the foilage that’s colorful, you’ll get to enjoy it all summer and into fall. Coleus can do similarly well for colors and shade tolerance. For flowers, begonias or impatiens would be happy and pretty. Then if you want a “spiller” I’d recommend a bright green sweet potato vine or creeping Jenny (though take care the name is accurate, it will escape and creep about)!

    Atta Girl :-) Good idea but I can't help and wonder that those grow lights are spaced too far to reach all plants. How did they do? Are you going to do the same way again (if you're doing it). I did similar set up but found out that my seedlings were getting leggy at the edges because the lights didn't reach "that far". So, I am looking to place 2 lights side by side without spacing. Thank you for sharing and your time :-)

    • @growingrealart
      @growingrealart Год назад

      I’ll definitely be using them again this year! Side benefit of the pvc pipes is that they can be pulled apart for easier storage. My setup is a south-facing window, so the amount of light I need for my grow lights is less than someone starting in darker conditions. I think it would be pretty easy to shorten the distance between light rigs and add more-that’s why I really liked this diy option to customize! Thank you for stopping by, and good growing to you!

    Hi Amber -- haven't seen one of your vids in a while. I'm also getting sick of Winter; just came in from today's shoveling. I don't start from seeds these days, so I've got to wait until around Mother's Day to look for seedlings. <edit> I agree on the mint warning -- in my first Madison garden back in grad school days (late 1970s) I purposely planted some spare mint next to the trash cans; about 5 summers ago I wandered by that address and the mint was still there.
