Groundsmen are More Than Just “Weird” Grass Cutters
As a groundsman, we heard our fair share of jokes and banter about the profession. But the recent comments made on The Bench podcast by Jon Wilkin and Sam Tomkins overstep the line. What started as light-hearted humour about the care we put into our pitches progressed into a number of careless and disrespectful comments, diminishing the importance of what we do and who we are.
Wilkin’s remark that groundsmen are "weird" and "psychopathic" paints the picture that people working in our profession are inherently "uncool." It’s easy to laugh off the image of someone obsessing over a patch of grass, but the reality is that this image discourages people from considering groundskeeping as a serio...

    They want to play on a solid ground with the greenest of the greenest grass and with the perfect line marks. When it’s not perfect, all players, commentators and staff criticize the people behind the job. At the same time they don’t appreciate when the ground and lines is flawless, the job isn’t easy.. Put some respect on the guys behind instead of mocking them, jesus..

    What STIHL sellers fail to tell anyone quite often is that only the FS-94 and higher models have this grease point on them. (STIHL told me that themselves before anyone says otherwise!) 😠 If you own say an FS-40 or an FS-70 RC for example you will have to take the head off and yes, they still ought to be greased even though STIHL will tell you they are 'maintenance-free'. Useful video for people this, well done.

  • @Ernie-Tech
    @Ernie-Tech 2 месяца назад

    Nice demo but you don't tell how many times per work hours you have to check/supply grease. My experience is that it can consume grease by loosing it while hot and escaping through the bottom axel. If that is the case, the bottom bearing is not properly sealing. You'll find residu of grease below the cutter head when you disassamble the whole thing right up to where you can look at the bottom casing of the transmission. Some heads need grease every say 10 hours or so, others last a life time. Also depends on the type of cutting (wire/blade, weeds or branches) you're doing. Also Chinese-build heads often start to loose grease over the years, but original Stihls are much stronger and tighter.

    • @internationalgreenkeepers
      @internationalgreenkeepers 2 месяца назад

      Hi Ernie, thanks for the message - we recommend following the user manuals guidelines for each particular machine, as each will have diffrent service or greasing intervals.

    • @Ernie-Tech
      @Ernie-Tech 2 месяца назад

      @@internationalgreenkeepers Yep, I see your point of view, thing is ; I bought this ATH35z strimmer which is in fact a Honda GX35 engine with an extra back-mounted chassis, flex- and straight beam to a strimmerhead BUT they forgot to document this gearbox maintenance. So I'm trying to decide what to do myself about it by looking at others. Any suggestions? Any "average" intervals? I'm using a alu head with 2-wires. There's (not yet) escaping any grease from the bottom. If I start pushing in grease, say every 50h or so, I'm just gonna kill it because bearings also need space to get rid of their heat, as too much grease insulates them and causes overheating/weardown.

    • @internationalgreenkeepers
      @internationalgreenkeepers 2 месяца назад

       @Ernie-Tech Sure thing, Stihl recommend on newer machines to check weekly and replenish 'as required', that's open to interpretation. However they previously stated after 25 hours of use, but this can be difficult to track and users would overfill the grease leading to gear damage

    • @Ernie-Tech
      @Ernie-Tech 2 месяца назад

      @@internationalgreenkeepers Exactly what I'm trying to avoid! Thanks for confirming that. The other thing is also that none of those heads have any means of verfiying easily how much grease is in them, unless you pull out the bottom axel. The poor sight in the filler opening does say a thing about the amount of grease that is really in there. I get the idea, seen the vivid market of (oem- and origial) strimmerhead markets, this is all so badly done to stimulate an after sales market... 😞

    • @internationalgreenkeepers
      @internationalgreenkeepers 2 месяца назад

       @Ernie-Tech No problem, in all honesty the engines themselves give up before the gears in my experience, I've had one machines that's probably been greased twice in 10 years and probably has over 500 hours of use if not more. I usually say, if you remove the screw and see grease everything is okay, but there are lots of variables as you mention, attachment, temperature, usage length, etc
