    I’ve volunteered/fostered and TNR’d for almost 20 years and those people that think declawing is ok are also the first ones to criticize getting a cat from a responsible breeder. We have 2 MaineCoon kittens, the sister was given to us because the first owner abused her. They need homes too but they will always have their claws

    Our extremely large apartment only has two doors, to the bedroom and the bathroom. Our miniature pinscher can push them both open. So, on the advice of the rescue (who I trust) we got a huge cage with shelves and put our 2-year-old sibling kitties in it. There's room for a large litterbox and a large scratching post, as well as food dishes. We got them in early December. It's been a really slow process. The boy does not like to be touched; the girl is extremely fear aggressive. The cage is partly covered by bedspreads. They watch me like hawks, their pupils are huge. The girl hisses at me and often cowers behind the scratching post. I do the slow blink, am very positive, don't stare, etc. There's been small progress since they came here; I can hand feed them treats. I've put my hand on a shelf, palm open, with treats. The boy will eat from my hand. Since they're in a cage, I worry about whether or not they're bored. I've gotten them some small toys; there's not much room on the floor of the cage to play with them. However, sometimes they're okay with a cat dancer with the upper cage door open. My dog isn't interested in them; he's lived with cats all his life. He is jealous of the attention, so I keep a supply of high value chewy treats to give him. This is so much harder than I anticipated. I often feel frustrated. I've had cats since I was 12 and nothing like this, even with shy rescues.

      You have to get them out of that cage. To put it into perspective, I wont work with cats in cages who are that fearful. It does more harm than good. They are lacking so much control, are confined, and not able to express natural instincts. Get them out asap.

    I just adopted a very fearful cat, he is not aggresive in anyway and loves to be pet, but gets scared easily and goes back to his hiding spot. I'm currently preparing my office to be his safe room, since me and my husband live in a 2 bedroom apartment, however, this is the room where my husband's clothes are and where I work. Is it ok if we keep the cat here and still use the room sometimes?

      Yes- you do your best with what you have. Just make sure he has everything he needs & adequate hiding places. That its not too noisy, etc.

    I adopted an extremely shy cat a month ago. And she hid under my bed the first week . And for the past three weeks in my basement. I was about to give up on her and bring her back to the SPCA. She finally came out today and I let her approach me. On her own terms. She hasn’t left my side since ❤I can’t even believe how sweet she is ❤

    I just successfully introduced a 13yo, very confident, dominant female cat to my 2yo, very silly, hyperactive, bonded littermate boys using the principles you described. There was a lot of room switching! The introduction actually started with selecting two boys from the litter my friend rescued. I knew I’d be adopting number 3 at some stage (she’s my very elderly grandmother’s cat) and I thought cat friendly males might work best with her. After six months they’re comfortable enough to play together and sleep in three beds in the same cat tree. I’d love for her to groom the boys, because she’s much better at it! But that’s probably not her vibe.

    This is so good. Currently, I find myself in a position,I’m concerned about. I’ve had a cat all my life and recently my cat died so I’ve been babysitting the cats in the neighborhood. Last night, my girlfriend dropped off her sister‘s cat to care for for 5 days and he’s been in hiding since he arrived. I understand consent and I’m not worried *now* because it’s only been one day and I have two litter boxes which he seems to have used. I did not keep him confined to one room, but rather closed off rooms in my home instead. Not the best choice, I understand now. I’ve put food out in the kitchen where the hub of activity (just me) is, along with treats and water in the living room where I’ve been playing animal friendly TV. He doesn’t seem to respond to the cat sounds that I used for my other babysitting jobs and I would love some advice on where to put the food. I don’t want to put it near the litter boxes, but since he’s used them already, would it make sense to put them about 10 feet apart?

    Hi, thanks again for the great video! I asked a load of questions on your other highlights version that you have answered here so please ignore them 😅 It would be great though to get some tips on doing back claws as well? And what treats did you give her? My female cat also LOVES tuna so they would work really well I think! Thanks 🤗

    Great video, thanks! Is this the full process video? Anyway I really want to try this, especially with my female cat whose claws always get caught on fabric surfaces when she is playing and she gets stressed out 🥺 how many sessions do you think I will need and how often should I come back to her and try again? And is there any special procedure for doing the back legs? Again, thank you for all the free information, so useful! 🥰

    I have a question!! My foster cat was basically just existing in a house for the last 10 years with little human interaction. I’ve had her for over a month and she’s relatively comfortable in her room (I have a camera in the room) however she will not come out of her hiding box when I’m in the room. I’ve implemented all of your tips but I have a question about our socialization visits. I use a feather to pet her to give a little space but after a minute or two she will hiss at me and start flapping her tail. I know she’s upset and uncomfortable so should I end our visit when she hisses and just try again the next day? She’s never been aggressive towards me but even when I get down on the ground level with her box and just talk to her no touching, she freezes up and starts licking her lips. I know she’s scared and just needs more time, do you have any advice? Thank you!

    I adopted a 14 week old feral kitten today. It's so stressful. I'm scared, he won't come out, he won't eat. He hid in a place I can't get to him immediately, he found a spot I didn't even know about. I can't move my bed, it's basically nailed to the floor it's that heavy. He has his injections on Tuesday. I'm really scared, I'll never be able to get to him. I was in over my head when I took him on. We aren't a match but its way to early to think thats the truth. I dont know what to do, I've been begging for a cat for years now, but now that I have one that is extremely difficult, stressed and scared it's just asking my mental health worse. I'm scared for his life, I want him to eat. I'm scared he won't and there's nothing I can do about it. He still hasn't used the litter tray. What do I do? I don't know what to do. I wanted a cat that was sweet and cuddly, his picture was so kind. I feel kind of deceived. I had expectations. I shouldn't have but I do, just like anyone who is wanting a kitten. Do I bring him back to the Foster carer? I am willing to do alot for him if he's willing to try with me. I keep telling myself "he's scared he doesn't know you, trust is earned and you shouldn't push it or he won't like you at all" but I'm scared he will never come out. I just wanted a cuddly cat but instead I got a cat that really doesn't like me or anything. Is there any advice anyone can give to help me help him?

      you are being a bit selfish in trying to mold a kitten into whatever you want. even if in the end your feral cat isn’t meant for your home, the best you can do right now is have a lot of patience and not overwhelm them. day 1 might not have been great, but day 15 may not be so bad.

    • @kvibki
      @kvibki 2 месяца назад

      @luzdoalem thank you! He is not feral. He is traumatised from the Foster home he came from and is scared. He comes out more and listens to me when I call him buba and he stops meowing for a bit when I do. It was so difficult the first day but I definitely have lowered my expectations and celebrating all of his little achievements instead. It's day 3 and he finally went to the toilet!! I'm so proud of him!! I was so scared. I hope he gets to eating a bit more soon but I'm so greatful! I've never been more excited to pick up cay poo in my life.

    Those treats are very bad for cats! The two ingredient baby food is ok. Freeze dried raw food are the best treats. Raw is the best diet.

    • @WildAtHeartCats
      @WildAtHeartCats 3 месяца назад

      Some treats are less healthy indeed but when working with shy or fearful cats you need to use what actually works. And through working with thousands of cats & using all variety of treats, I use what works.

    • @mistyrious1111starseed

      @@WildAtHeartCatsThose treats once or twice day isn't as bad as feeding dry kibble, ESPECIALLY leaving a bowl of dry 24 hours. There is no such thing as a high quality dry kibble. This is COMPLETE BULLSHIT. The “Community Cat Program” is a DIABOLICALLY CRUEL program denounced by me and countless other animal experts and professionals. I just rescued a cat who was subjected to this outrageous and flagrantly inhumane program. Apparently he was living in a parking lot at Whole Foods for almost a year. Obviously someone at some point had dumped him there. After a couple of months, the employees called the SDHS thinking they would rescue him, but people came out trapped him, neutered him, notched his ear, and then dumped him right back in the busy parking lot at the intersection of I-5 and another street with high traffic. 🤬🤦🏼‍♀️ This was NOT A FERAL CAT!!! This was a very small, friendly, domesticated cat who was TERRIFIED and had no instincts of how to fend for himself. The caring people at Whole Foods fed him when they could, but there was no good reliable water source. He lived a horrific life with cars and tractor trailers coming in and out right where he was abandoned. At some point he was so desperate, he tried to eat something very hard and fractured all his four of his canine teeth, which then gave him enormous mouth pain and made it difficult to eat - Those have now been extracted. I cannot for the life of me understand how a person from the HUMANE SOCIETY drove this little friendly, docile guy back to the nightmare place he was living and abandoned him for the second time. WTF. To that monster and the people who encourage this egregious behavior I say a big F you. How the hell do you people sleep at night?!

    My cat sometimes I can tell is about to bite (nip) if I don’t wake up when he wants and he keeps meowing for play or food (even if I don’t that early 5am but try to go back to sleep maybe an hour later etc)- I don’t want to get bit or nipped so pop out of bed quick - so it’s reinforcing what he wants - not sure what to do. He may loaf and purr for a second near me during but I can tell when he’s not about to sleep but try to bite nip a sec later so I get up quick the too- bit maybe he’s just purring and ready to sleep. ? We have 16 pound male cats (5 years old), they get food 2x per day, 8am in the morning, 7pm at night, and they know when it's mealtime. We know if we're late because we get a claw in the a$$. We take them outside on harness and leash 2x to 4x per day. They eat moths, bugs and grasshoppers all the time. They also have a catio, they can go outside (on grass) any time they want 7am to 9pm. They eat raw food (2/3) and canned limited ingredients (1/3), with a few pieces of kibble and a couple of Churu squeeze tubes for treats. We play with them constantly (their toys, and cardboard boxes, are all over the house). They have 4 cat towers. We have multiple widened window sills for them to hang out. One of them is food-obsessed and a bit of a chonker. He gobbles his food, lays on the floor near the food for an hour before meals, waiting. Gets up on the counters after we go to bed and scavenges any shreds of food, licks any pans, that kind of thing. The other is lean and muscular, you can see his hip bones, has a skinny waist, he has to be enticed to eat. Walks away from his food multiple times, eating small amounts over the course of a couple of hours. Because the other is food-obsessed, we have to pick up his bowl and cover it. We've tried slow feeders and food puzzles. Some cats are just food-obsessed.

      If the cat is currently hiding under the bed I would not disturb them. Under a bed can be ok, its all about access to the cat. Can you reach them to put food near them or try to give treats or play time. Under beds can be really bad if they get up & into the box spring.

    This is a great video. We just adopted 2 very shy cats from a shelter a week ago. They were feral kittens and spent almost 2 years at the shelter as they're so shy. We visited them for months at the shelter to get to know them. The shelter staff warned us they would "regress", which they have. They were so frightened the first 24 hours they wouldn't eat. They were in shock. I blocked off under the bed and under one of the dressers before getting them (the other dresser is not against a wall and is easy to reach under). The first couple days they were hiding a lot behind the dresser against the wall. Your suggestion to put a sheet on a cat tree is brilliant. Now, at 1 week, they are hanging out a lot on that cat tree under the sheet. They rarely go behind the dresser anymore as they have the cat tree plus other hiding spots that I provided--caves and tents. And they are now eating normally and using the litterbox.

I've been spending time with her and showing a lot of love. She is making some progress after several months. In the beginning she would not even come out and eat her food if I was in the room. Now she does. She used to run and hide from me all the time. Now I can set her on chair next to me and she will lay there. When I pet her she really lights up and begins to purr and butts her head against my hand. She really likes the kindness and is showing it. So I'm encouraged that I am seeing progress even though it's coming slowly. I really hope to see her lose all the fear eventually. She has areas that she feels safe in. However I'm trying to teach her that the whole house is safe. I take her into my office and spend time with her and she's doing very well. Sometimes I will take her and do other areas of the house and sit down on the floor with her and spend time. I pet her and she really likes that and begins purring. In the beginning she didn't even purr. But she really is a sweet cat and she is finally after several months beginning to do better. I have a high perch for her and she really likes it there and feels safe. But I'm trying to help her understand everywhere in this house is safe. I'm guessing that she equates a certain things here with what she experienced in the past. So I'm working to give her a better and happier future. I bought a big bag of toys for her a while back and I play with her to get her to be happy. I believe the happier she is the more those fears will fade away.

      I love the care & dedication you clearly have. My only advice is to not pick her up & bring her places, instead allow her to go to the places on her own when she is ready. I actually advice all cat guardians to not pick their cats up unless they want that, as most dont. And indeed, the more safe she feels, the less fear she will experience. 💜
