I believe the word "Jew" is a derivation or Latinization of the word Ewe. The consonant 'W' by itself can be pronounced as "we"(which is evident in the word "Ewe". Hence, we("we" which is also where the word came from in English- referring to the people) have Jewe. When the J which is pronouced as Y is separated, we have the phrase Y Ewe.
