Our Moorish Idol cam
Просмотров 2752 года назад
Our Moorish Idol, Gill, has been with us for nearly 4 years now. We owe it's success to our fish quarantine procedures (copper treatment) and a high quality diet of purple & green algae sheets, Hikari Spirulina Mysis & Brine Shrimp, Reef Nutrition pellets, LRS Reef Frenzy & Rod's frozen food.

    Does the siphon break immediately stop the back siphon? I built something similar and forgot about the siphon. Debating using a siphon break and/or check valve or just cutting the tube above the water line

      Yes, the interior down pipe in the saltwater mixing station is cross drilled with holes above the water line for a siphon break.

    nice set up I always wonder if you can do gravity pull fill valve because I never like the idea of installing the buckets higher. Can you please explain by doing automatic water changes I never need to do manual 20% water change? Also how do you deal with cleaning sand as a maintenance?

    • @sntmods
      @sntmods 3 года назад

      You need a calibrated dosing pump, such as GHL's Doser Maxi or Neptune's DOS. The dosing line that acts as the pickup tube extends down to the bottom of the saltwater container. That line runs through the doser and then to the tank, the waste line operates the same way but reversed. As for cleaning, we remove the plumbing and give it a chlorine bath every couple of years and use a pressure washer.

    • @sntmods
      @sntmods 4 года назад

      The fish with yellowish white and black vertical stripes is a Moorish Idol, its a close relative of the tangs/surgeon fish and the only member of the Zanclidae family. A difficult fish to keep in an aquarium but it can be done with the right environment and diet. Quarantine is a must

    How did you do that heater inline? What fitting did you use?

    • @sntmods
      @sntmods 6 лет назад

      I centered and bored out a 1-1/4" hole in a 1-1/2" PVC cap, then used a 3/4" "Uniseal" and press it into place. The trick I used is to wrap a little electrical tape around the heater's glass to increase the diameter so the Uniseal doesn't leak. The Eheim Jager heater's glass isnt quite the 3/4" in diameter so the tape takes care of the rest.

    I don't understand all the plumbing along with the pump you have hooked up between your reservoir tanks. Any chance you could elaborate on how they work?

    • @sntmods
      @sntmods 6 лет назад

      One pump does double duty, transfers RO/DI water from one container to the saltwater mixing/storage container; and also recirculates the saltwater mix. This is controlled via the pair of valves that exist immediately before the pump. I can also pump RO/DI or saltwater to the tank by opening or closing a pair of valves that exist after the main pump. The "faucets" that exist in front of the tanks can fill my 5 gallon buckets and operates due to gravity.

  • @theonlyrevolt
    @theonlyrevolt 6 лет назад

    Is the water in your salt container being circulated or is it stagnant? Have you have any problems with algae growing in the salt water container? What salt are you using?

    • @sntmods
      @sntmods 6 лет назад

      I use Reef Crystals by Instant Ocean and a pump runs for a few hours a day to keep in moving. No algae issues at all.

  • @sntmods
    @sntmods 6 лет назад

    Sadly, I lost this wonderful fish, along with a wrasse and longnose hawkfish back on August 25th after the return pump, mistakenly, wasnt turned back on for 20+ hours following a feeding. The wave pump wasnt enough to maintain enough oxygen in the water.

  • @jeffyal1966

    After 6 months of waiting for GHL, I finally got my Maxi, can you share your set up for programming? I have the P4 and Maxi slave units. Are you using any float or optical sensors to assist your AWC?

    • @sntmods
      @sntmods 6 лет назад

      Though you can use float switches and or optical sensors, I use neither. I have a pickup tube made from from 1/4" acrylic that removes roughly 3 gallons a day right now and is installed in my sump's skimmer chamber. The clean saltwater enters my return pump chamber on it's own dosing line. I just setup a schedule within the Profilux 4 or the Maxi stand alone unit that pumps out 12000ml over a total of four sessions, every morning, and then replaces that same amount with clean saltwater. I am limited by this method as the doser is only able to pump 3000ml at a time and a maximum of 24000ml over the course of a day. Again, this is a limit set by the method I use.

    Good video👍 what kind of switch are you using? And I assume its controlling your heater aswell?

    • @sntmods
      @sntmods 6 лет назад

      DJ's Reef, it's a Leviton Wifi Plug connected via Wink app. I dont use a heater for the stored saltwater as the cooler water going to the display tank has very limited impact on temperature in such low quantities.
