A great day on the bike. Trying to take the least amount of black stuff possible, I ventured to some amazing tourist spots, easily accessible in one day. Lilydale Falls, Camden Dam, Mt Barrow and Max’s Lookout. Passing through some untouched bushland and stumbling across some epic scenery.

Adventure riding amongst Devil Country….

Deep in the wilderness of Tasmania you will find the Tasmanian Devil. A large carnivorous marsupial capable of chewing you up. This trip finds me amongst it’s habitat. Fortunately I never encountered any today. Exploring this magic Island I found some water falls and an awesome camp spot, one I will revisit for sure. I will keep its location quiet as I do not want to be the person to open it up...

Exploring the edge of the Tarkine Wilderness riding through thick massive trees, gravel roads, wet clay, and forest tracks on a DRZ400 and a GS650 that had road tyres. It goes to show you don’t need to spend a fortune on an adventure bike to be able to have fun. Looping around to the Dipp Falls and the Big Tree Walk being all part of the adventure.

Got two front sprockets, one 14 and one 15 and 47 at the back I switch from one to the other depending on the road trip, but use the same chain !
Is there any chance one can join ya? I see you know TAS pretty well, would love to tag along one day ✌️
Just signed up as a Sub. I love in Launnie. Getting a bike soon, so loving your videos...Except the bit about Curry chicken Pies 🤢 lol
Thanks Chooky, hope you get a bike and can start exploring some tracks
How is it called the triangular plastic cover under the battery.??? Plese if anyone knows. Thanks 😊
I have 14/47 on my bike now I was thinking of going to a 15/47. As i will be riding more on the highway. Would it be revving high going 100-110kph
In my opinion…….yes it will mate
Hi Dave I have my first drz400 stock gearing im always looking for another gear and reving its guts out at 100 so I took your advice after watching this video and went with a 41 tooth rear sprocket and I went for a ride and I was doing about 80 ks along a dirt road and didn’t realise I was in fourth gear so it felt like I had another gear it great now I’m very happy with it thanks for the info Ride safe and have a nice day 🤙
That’s awesome Toby. It’s always a compromise depending on what type of riding you’re doing. 14/41 will do most conditions comfortably.
Good video mate reminds me of Fraser island in QLD where I used to ride
Yeah thanks for watching Toby. We are spoilt for choices down here in Tassie. All types of riding in close proximity.
@@Tassiedave you sure are I’m in the mallee part of Victoria Just flat roads and red dirt
Mate it’s a fun fast technical track in a stunning part of tas we’ve done it on bikes quads and Forbees but a midnight ride to pieman and back is the best one I think great vid you guys did well ride safe cheers
Yes some good memories came out of that trip, cheers
I used party in one of those shacks as a teenager 😅. My old man lives down there at Trial harbour. Great video
Glad you liked the video, bit of fun. We all had a great day. I hope your still able to visit your dad and enjoy
GO the mighty DRZ 🙃🍺
did that track 6-ish years ago on the DR650 and ended up folded in half with the pig parked on top of me and needed 2 guys to lift it off me 🤣😒 hurt like hell 🤬😁 and i can tell you that the track now is waaay worse now than when i did it 😮 have been wanting to do it again 🤔buuuut maybe i am bizzie 😂🤣 keep well mate 😁🍺
Certainly has some challenges
Love your work Dave 🙌🏼 have to queue another ride soon!
Another ride indeed. Enjoyed the day and your company mate 👍
gday Dave bloody nice area youre living in there. what part of tassie

@@Tassiedave very nice ill be sure to add that to my road trip
I just bought a DRZ 400 E, and about to put the Concepts seat on it 👍 Good review. Cheers mate
Thank you, a good purchase
thank mate really helpful
A quick guide for all. Glad you liked it. 👍
Hi Dave.. Where did you get the rear bike holder from..? I like the look of it...
I hand made my bike carrier in my shed and got it hot dip galvanized. It’s very solid, with no need for tie downs.
Hey Dave. What model of riding pants do you use..? Do they have the knee pads inbuilt into them..?
They are Alpinestar Venture XT pants. I would buy them again when required. You get what you pay for as the saying goes.
Heya Dave. Good videos Mate.. Just a query: What do you find is a good sprocket ratio for front and rear for your DRZ for both dirt tracks and road riding ..? I have a 2022 DRZ and i am interested in your thoughts as i am trying to decide which is the best option to go by to change out the sprockets as the bike revs its guts out on the bitumen on the factory standard sprocket set i have now..... Thanks in advance for any help you can give me please mate. Appreciated for any advice you can throw my way, and keep up the good work on your videos and good content, as its nice to see also what is going on down in the apple isle with off road biking content... Cheers, Matthew T.. QLD dirt bike rider...
Glad you liked it Matthew. Have a look at my other videos for the answer to your question 👍
nice video mate 😎👌 been up to Mount Barrow once on the DR650 with the ADV boys , and then took the misses up on the back of my f650gs . was fun 2 up 😂 been trying to get away for a long ride for soooo darn long buuuut life (or lack of) keeps getting in the way 😒 keep well mate and ride safe-ish 😉🍺
Thanks Jeff. Bit cold for long rides now
Hey mate, awesome video, don't suppose you have this track on GPS? I'd be keen to give it a go one day soon
Hi Dane, no sorry I do not. I have not learnt how to upload GPX files etc as yet. Plenty of tracks in that area to explore/ride
No worries mate, just keen to get onto that sandy whoop track. How far in off dalgarth road ?
@@daneparish2934 Head down Bakers Beach Road, turn right into Browns Creek Road, go approx. 2.5km, turn left down track. Follow your nose up past little quarry…..
Awesome thanks mate 👍
I run 16/38 which allows me to cruise at 75 mph on the highway and it works OK for me off road.
Was you able to fit a 16T straight on or did you have to modify something?
Changing the front will affect the chain length less, but you might want a BnB sprocket cover
My 2023 USA 400S model came with 15/44 stock from factory. It seems like a decent compromise, and the same ratio as your 14/41.
Thanks for your comment. I’m pleased my video has offered an awareness, depending on type of riding.
Nice, but unfortunately almost all wrong for the stock M8 low rider... but a good start.
DR-Z400E, supermoto wheels, 16/39 road use only
Good road combo Max
Drop down to a 15/39 next time you replace the front sprocket. I ran the 16 but the 15 proved better on road. DRZ SM tops out at 155kph cruises at 115
That’s a great video. I am currently doing up a vintage Carapark here in Perth. I would be interested in knowing if you can get the same type but for the windows. At the moment I have black venetian blinds but now I’m thinking that my ones may just do a lot of shaking and rattling whilst the van is moving..
We are very happy with this blind for our door Stevie. You can buy similar blinds for windows. If you have a look on caravansplus.com.au (or elsewhere) and search for EuroVision Slimline internal blind, you may find something to suit your build.
Dave I like your thinking, where do you purchase the 41 or 42T rear sprockets?
I do support MX Superstore online. A little bit extra weight does not bother me so I buy the steel sprockets which last a bit longer (in my opinion) and are cheaper.

Just found the channel. Enjoy the content and hope you keep making it.
Thanks for kind words. I’m no expert but if you can take something from what I film, it makes it worthwhile for me. Cheers
Nice work you two + pup, good video thanks that south coast is a beautiful place
Thanks John, we are no experts at making videos, but if someone can take something from them, then that’s great. Many amazing spots along that coastline.
The real trouble with the DRZ, that you can't easily fix, is the close ratio gearbox. Get a WR 450f and get it street legal, it has the wide ratio trans, fuel injection, and weighs substantially less.
What country did you do this in, in the US I've only heard of a couple of States that you could get it done w/o a lit of trouble but IDKnow jack-cH!T about the process? So does the 450f have a 6speed gearbox or is 5th gear really tall? I'm looking to start riding & have been looking at a lot of different bikes but still can't decide? I'm waiting on some money right now so I'm doing the research to know what I want. I'm guessing the suspension on the 450f is considerable better since it's a moto-cross bike? I heard that in Australia you can easily convert this bike to ride on road but in the US like Utah & one other State did I hear you could get the thing on the road where many States are hard? Anyhoo, thanks for getting me thinking along these lines b/c I worried about the DRZ being able to handle the highways for much time & I don't like the idea of the bike running at almost full rpm's for long periods.... vibrate me/bike to death? peace man
@@diggy-d8w If you haven't ridden before get a KLX 300 or the CRF 250/300l. Neither of these bike is a great choice for serious off road work, but they are great for learning on.
It weighs a little less, has no road going equipment and a smaller tank. Road gear and a larger tank. Weights the same.
@@diggy-d8w I live in Nevada in the USA. It’s a bit inconvenient to go through the legalization process but it is doable. If this is your first bike a 450 might be a bit much, a drz might fit your needs and abilities better for starting out. The WR is far better in the dirt, but for long distance asphalt the drz is better. Everything is a compromise.
""Everything is a compromise"" absolutely correct ! Perhaps we have too many choices & Bike Channel's use all those to continually buy/restore or mod them out. BUT I digg it so I'm here. I've been researching 10-11 Dual Sports & have all the post purchase mods that each bike will need plus the cost of all those things. The WR250 & 450F are not on my lists but you can see my gearing question. I'm looking for highway speeds that won't vibrate me to death. I figure my riding will be 80% on the Roads leaving 20%. That can change more to dirt. But I've got the DR650/DRz400, Honda650, Honda 150L, 300L Rally version, and some others as well. I have dabbled several times asking about taking a flatout MotorCross bike like the 450f to convert which was part of my discussion. I'm certain you've been there/done that. The DRz400 is a good choice for anyone & I've done this deep dive on all these bikes so I'll know what they already did on mods & so I'll know what's left to get done. This will give me a better idea of a fair used price. I also know most of what to look at on each bike but if I can't buy new, knowing about all the mods & such will put me ahead and hopefully keep me from F#@King Up too bad..... I'm still saving so you never know, I might get a chance to snag a 450f & someone in a bind..... just know if it's a good deal I'll buy it & either flip it or get her legal. Thanks for the info.... it'll be my 1st bike since the early 90's peace
Who makes the windscreen you have? I'd like to get on for my DRZ. I'm in the USA.
Yes I really like this screen. Just enough deflection without being a nuisance in the bush. It is from an Australian company. I’m not sure if they ship internationally. www.screensforbikes.com
Thanks for the info, cheers.
I just picked up a used DRZ 400s stock is 15-44 and it works well. It will cruise happily at 65mph (105kph) and runs completely out of steam at 82mph (132kph) but I am a little heavy at 105kg with my gear and I live a little over 1500m.
That’s awesome, Have fun on your new purchase
Hi! Great ride! Could you tell me please, what tire size do you use on your DRZ?
I run the Dunlop 606 in a 120/90/18
@@Tassiedave thanks a lot!
I only ride bush and I'm running a 13/47 still get around 100ks but its screaming, it'll climb a tree though 😄
Good description 👍
Great stuff Dave . Excellent rider skills
Yeah a good ride with a bit of everything
Brilliant retrofit! Enjoy the rides, lil buddy!
Thanks for the clip. You are the only one who showed how the seat interact with your legs in different position. I was debating to go XL or not, and you convinced my to go XL. Thanks a lot for the great information. Did you changed you peg? I heard the stock one are a pain. I bought a new DRZ few days ago. I want to order the seat right now (hated the stock one in the show room). Other than that, this bike is the BEAST.
Glad you found it helpful. I have not changed the pegs.
Hey mate love the content! What gps app are you using on your phone, i can't seem to find a good one.
If I can’t find it on google maps I then switch to my Garmin inreach programme. I carry a hand held Garmin gpsmap 66i with me at all times
Nice video, and love the DRZ content. My DRZ is parked for the winter at present as the temperatures are due to drop to -30F (-34.4C) here in interior Alaska this evening. It will be late April to early May before I will be riding mine.
Glad you liked it. Your temperatures are unreal, too cold for me.
My DRz is an "s" which has stock gearing of 15/44. Mine is a used 2020 I picked up last month from a dealer, the bike had some mods done to it by the previous owner, one of which was a final drive change to 14/48... This was very low and at speeds over 55mph(88kph) I could feel the bike getting out of its happy zone, plus it made the throttle and engine braking abrupt ... I bumped the front sprocket up to a15t (15/48), its was a nice improvement but after a couple rides both on and off road I felt it still needs to be higher. So, I ordered a 46t rear sprocket, this will put the final drive at 15/46, just a smidge lower than stock which should work out well for the terrain I'll be riding.
Sounds like you’ve thought about it, well done
Love my 2011 DRZ400S, 36K mi. Jetted-3x3 mod, FMF Power Bomb Header, Delkevic slip- on(No Baffle), LED Bulb/ Headlight, 16T FS, Shinko700 (60/40) Tires, TS- 95mph(No Wobble) still a Beast first gear up the hillsides. Top Rack w/ Saddle bags. We go everywhere all year round in SoCal- Enjoy!! The DRZ Experience, where the Road Ends, we keep going!
A few mods there to be enjoyed
Thanks for posting this video. I've ridden this the other direction, but came out via Buckland. I think it is much steeper the way you went. I had a honda cb 125e with trials tires. Your bike sounds really good - did you have to jet it or put a kit in? Also, are you running the original exhaust?
Glad you liked it. My bike is pretty standard engine wise with original exhaust
@@Tassiedave That's really impressive - it doesn't sound lean at all - no popping etc. Do you have the baffle out of the pipe and the snorkel off the airbox?
Standard with no mods as mentioned@@urastus9202
@@Tassiedave awesome - thanks for the feedback
@@Tassiedave I'm guessing the bike came uncorked (baffle and snorkel removed) from the dealer - it sounds like it 🙂. That stuff might be in a bag of bits that came with the bike - the drz was designed that way. I didn't know about the carb - it sounds bang on; probably because of the grandfather thing and being enduro classified. You're an awesome rider.
Great video thanks Tassie Dave
Thanks, hope it was helpful
Wow nice ride bro ❤
Thanks for watching
😎🍺
Dave I reckon plenty of people have been thru there in 4 bys before you and old mate - with some of the ruts and made chicken tracks, some good peddling there son not falling into those ruts, couple of pretty dicey ones too! Tell ya what thats a beautiful spot there mate at Mayfield Bay need to get off my ass and get down there always wanted to see Tassie.
The bog hole ruts were waaaay deeper than the camera showed. Plenty of “post card picture” places down here. We are so lucky
Nice ride, how do you find these trails?
Was a ripper.
😊
I have a Seat Concepts Standard Comfort coming in for my DRz. I'm going to be doing some miles sitting on this bike for sure, I could tell the stock seat isn't going to be good for full days in the saddle. I also tried a Moose Racing tall, gripper seat, a friend had on hand and sold me cheap. The Moose Racing gripper would be great on a DRz meant for mostly off-road but its not anymore comfortable to sit on than the stock seat.
Good decision…….your butt will appreciate it
