Occupations as an alternative housing strategy - Dr Suraya Scheba
Join Dr Suraya Scheba, a senior lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Cape Town as she delves into the often-overlooked urban occupations regarded as criminal, proposing that they can serve as catalysts for innovative housing strategies. In her insightful presentation, she traces the historical context of land dispossession in South Africa, beginning in 1652, and examines its impact on systemic inequality and the quest for housing justice. Highlighting the significance of Reclaim the City’s Cissie Gool House occupation, Suraya draws compelling parallels with urban regeneration efforts in São Paulo, showcasing the resilience and grassroots governance essential for inclusive urba...

    I’m all for housing the homeless and for those in blikkies dorp. However land allocation has been refused, because it’s too far from the city. So when land is allocated it must also come with infrastructure, police, busses, trains, schools, small hospitals small supermarkets, parks, community halls, sports grounds, and swimming pools community day care centres fore the aged and disabled. All of these services create jobs so the flow on becomes self sufficiency and pride over time. Council offices, and council staff to maintaine the infrastructure. People are valuable let’s respect them so they can respect themselves.

    So according to this woman everyone in the metro (4.7 million people) must live in the City? The City itself dont even have space for 1 million residents. How and where will almost 5 milion people gonna move around in a few kms in the City? Must they also build all the hospitals and schools (few hundreds schools) etc etc there? Some people are really so clueless. It is the townships themselves that need to become cities.

    Spatial in justice is a huge concern for poor and marginalised. We need to be organized in our communities and fight against this misuse of vacant land in the inner city for the benefit of the rich. This piece of land can be used a social housing development but decent housing in the province is a huge problem. The City wants to push us away from the areas with better living conditions and better opportunities to the overcrowded slumbs. Let's mobilize each other and fight against UNEQUAL distribution of land. The greatest threat to the Western Cape government is the unity of people of colour and black people.

    Eish, I also noticed that the roads to Nkandla (i.e. my lifelong supreme commander Jacob Zuma's well-deserved palace, all praise to him) get narrower. I don't know why. Also in Transkei, there are only single-lanes. I think the people must revolt against this. Let us build houses and roads to our Nklandla Temple and let us make Transkei for us people. Viva. Viva.

    Stupid ideas from WEF "Great Reset" elites. Aspirations to do better and live better are what make strong, productive people. If you are at the bottom of the class, you cannot just get bumped-up because of woke, left ideologies. It is lovely to compete and struggle against the odds... Equity without a strong vessel to make use of faculties and resources is stupid and nonsensical... putting the bottom of the class in a favourable position is only going to make the entire class a complete mess. Communists need to read Solzhenitsyn - these cretins promoting socialism are really just Nomenklatura that will scoop the cream of the milk and then kick over the jug so that the 'equals' can fight and die.

  • @whangjohnlizhao550

    Inequalities ? Yes, in the Olympics there is just one Gold medal for each discipline. I remember school, only 1 from each class gets the top marks, you were warned in every grade that this is serious, study, read, make effort to go the extra mile... find books and read... most kids ignored the warnings and most kids will be average, no gold medal for average... Hardships and obstacles in life are either going to motivate you and shape you into a resilient and determined person... the stink in the townships is their to motivate you, clean up the stink and earn your way out.... If we cure all the difficulties and diseases that plague man, we will do so at the cost of other life in the system... hardships and inequalities are good, life needs to be harder and tougher for most ignorant fools.

    They are trying to develop in Tafelberg and you guys are stopping them, they are in a legal battle against you to build houses for you. Like what the hell.. Those two lanes and not a pothole in sight. That is crazy. There are 2 lines to join many areas around cape town. ideally it depends on the number of people traveling on that road.

    Molo Bhuti. YOH! Now you are making up stuff! 😳 Have you tried travelling to and from Fish Hoek, Simonstown, Kommetjie, Hout Bay or Camps Bay? These are supposedly more affluent areas, but YOH! Single lane, highly congested, no emergency lanes, often no rail or bus links. They pay high tax and have a daily commute of 60 to 90 minutes each direction to work and home. The N2 is certainly not perfect and was planned when there were a lot fewer citizens in and around Cape Town. Who knew the city ould have to accommodate the influx and would grow to almost 5,000,000 citizens excluding tourists?

    How do you classify these as unused? Have you been there to check. Ysterplaat is active, sure it's not as active as it once was but it is active. Wingfield is also in use, part of it at least. Youngs field is also in use.

    • @ndifunaukwazi1924
      @ndifunaukwazi1924 3 года назад

      We've done a detailed analysis of each of the sites. Wingfield and Youngsfield are largely unused and the City's recent spatial development frameworks for the areas in which these bases fall made no requirement for height restrictions around the sites, indicating that they are not actively used as airports. Parts of Ysterplaats are being used, but there is a clear question about whether we need all three of these military airports all within 10km from the Cape Town CBD, surely some of this land could be better used? Look out for an op-ed on the use of these sites which will be out soon.
