I am looking to convert some old vhs tapes to digital format. I have a Magnavox zv427mg9 VCR to DVD combo, but I want to convert the vhs tapes directly to digital. The Magnavox has an HDMi output which makes the resolution of the vhs tapes very good when watching. Any thoughts?

I tried this and it didn't work. I went from a VHS player to the YITROX Upscaler to the Elgato HD60 S+ to my laptop and I just get a blank screen. When I cycle through the resolutions on the upscaler, the best I can get is a flashing rainbow screen that says there is no input. Am I doing something wrong or does this combination not work?

I decided to follow your recommendation but did the ElGato HD60x since I only have laptops... but the issue I am dealing with is my VCR only has Yellow/White components and the upscaler feed is black & white... do I need a VCR with the 3 component jacks (which I thought was better audio only)? Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

The Yitrox has terrible reviews and would only provide the image in black and white when I tried it.

ALL those analog to digital converters on the market are GARBAGE - Those low-end capture devices, or RCA to HDMI + HDMI capture, etc all garbage - they were intended to work with LIVE signals (console, bluray, etc) and not recorded signals. Even small issues with sync pulse will throw your A/V sync off, even something like a VCR's auto tracking kicking in, or anything causing glitches, bad tape, time base errors, etc, these capture devices are NOT designed to deal with these issues unlike DVD Recorders which had tbc like features / frame syncronizers, etc... Of course capturing with a DVD recorder in 2024, is really silly, so the next best thing, a TBC between your capture device and computer, a good quality one with comb filtering too Otherwise you are wasting your time - these consumer upscalers are TRASH - useless and a waste of time, in many cases will make your image look worse, and in fact the upscaler on your TV would do a much better job anyway. There is also the issue of capturing at the right IRE levels. Some of those capture solutions online only capture using 0-255 full range, which is wrong and is meant for computer graphics. video captures from NTSC sources like VHS, etc, should be the equivalent of 16-235 (IRE 7.5) Using those upscalers is a big no-no, you are better off using software AI upscalers, some do a a far better job (like day and night). as with the software AI solutions the video frame is completely regenerated as opposed to a cheap half arsed scaler that just SCALES the images and terribly so I might add. So you are taking garbage and scaling it to ........ GARBAGE ! it won't look any better.

I bought the HDX60 elgato and the Yitrox upscaler that you recommended and was not able to get it to work with my video player even had a friend who is very tech savvy try to work it out and he could not get it to work, so wondering if you tried the laptop system with the HD60X yourself to see if it works?

Your video on that matter was perfect and the explanation of upscaling the analog signal, using RCA or S-Video was perfectly clear; but I have one question: Is it possible to upscale a digital video signal (FireWire) from a camcorder by hardware or software, similarly to what you showed with the Yitrox? I know there are digital scalers designed for old consoles, but should those ones work on this scenario? Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond. Best regards.

Greetings from the UK and many thanks for a really interesting & informative video.I have a bunch VHS tapes of our band in the 80s,which I'm keen to convert. I have a question though [forgive me if it's a stupid one - may be fundamentally misunderstanding.!]. I would connect the Yitrox AVSvideo to my VCR deck and the Virox then outputs upscaled video. I would then need a capture card to get upscaled video into my MacBook for editing? You talk about the Elgato External Capture Card, which I have, but the inputs on that are only composite or S-Video. How would I get the output of the Yitrox into a capture card?

Once the video is converted and on my laptop, am I able to add it on a dvd and a thumb drive?

Thanks for the great video! I am having trouble connecting the Elgato to my DVD player. My LG DVD player does not have the yellow/white/black audio video jacks, just an HDMI jack (out to TV). Is there a coupler I can use to hook up these two (the female elgato jacks to the HDMI)? Any advice you can offer would be great!

Hi, I like your video, quick question: I get the Yitrox, and it upscale well, but it displays only black and white, no colors at all, and it pauses the output constantly, the tape is good, I play it many times and it does not stop at all. Any recommendation to get the color back? I maybe just have a defective unit. My VHS does not have s-video output. Note: this is not a complaint :) I am a big fan of your videos and your approach is really one of the best.

I really appreciate all of your videos. Have you, by chance, made one yet that shows the ins and outs of your settings in OBS? The hardware arrived yesterday: S-cable, Yitrox upscaler, power supply, Elgato HD60X, and new external hard drive. I've installed OBS and watched a lot of videos on their site, but I'm still tweaking and trying to understand resolution and pixels and stretching, etc., and what to select in OBS as the input and output sizes and FPS, etc. Are there any other tips, tricks, or videos that you recommend? Due to your RUclips channel, I now have the confidence to tackle digitizing boxes full of home videos. Thank you!

Don't use Elgato vhs capture card. Bad quality, no 60fps, wobble, low bitrate and expenisive. I use an easycap capture card and I'm happy with it. It produces high quality,60fps, decent bitrate and it comes with easy-to-use software and the best part is that I paid only 10$ for it. Worth it! WARNING: the easy cap is named by many brands and the quality is inconsistant from brand to brand

I no longer recommend this device, as it is now almost impossible to find and personally I would just stick with the Yitrox.

Newbie here. Your videos are excellent! In trying to mesh several of your videos together to go straight from VHS to hi def (1080p, I think). Would I connect the VCR to the Yitrox HD Converter to the Elgato HD 60 X to my laptop USB to make this work? And it sounds like the S-cable is superior to the composite cables so I have that option available. Have I understood how the Yitrox and the Elgato work together in between in the VCR and the laptop? Or should a newbie just stick with the regular Elgato simple setup because it's good enough? Thank you for all the videos.

You should always use a 75 ohm co-axial cable for composite video where possible, it can give a substantial improvement in image quality by removing the RF ringing in 'shoelace' wires. With PAL region VHS machines that have a SCART socket you can use an adapter with an RCA composite socket. They're pretty much the same as SPDIF digital audio connectors which use similar carrier frequencies (several MHz) to analogue video.

I tried this. I purchased the Yitrox upscaler and hooked it up in between my camcorder and my capture device. All I got was a fuzzy black and white video. After reading the specs on the Yitrix upscaler, I learned that it does not support 240p input. It starts at 480p and goes up from there.

Everything is fine, but from time to time when the shots on the tape change, the picture changes from color to black and white, and I have to switch to switch it back to colors, possibly because I am using an S-Video cable and not CVBS?

Avoid Elgato Video Capture. It's crap. It's capture quality is very awful. Mine was directly to recycling facility.

Interesting demo of these 3 different converters. They all look great, but i really didn't care for the 4:3 to 16:9 upscaler, because it seemed to stretch the picture. Unless i missed something, is there a way to up scale to a 4:3 to an HD without stretching it to 16:9? Thanks

There is a big problem with Gefen upscaler. It has not been produced for 5 years and is impossible to get!!!!
