Midgard Arthurian British Army

Second in what might be a short series of Wargames armies 'on parade'. This is my 300 point Arthurian British army for MIDGARD. These are all Gripping Beast figures, many I've had for years, the figures have been 'refurbished' and all units are on 120mm bases. An extra unit of mounted Comitatus crept in at the back!

Two Turnout layout Update August 2024

A brief progress update , work has started on the rail served facility on the far left of the shelf. Suggestions for names for that industry are welcome! And a short switching session.. only two cars in and two cars out, with no complicated moves. Very relaxing :-) If you want to know more about how I plan the switching on this layout, see earler video re 'operating'.

    I didn't even notice the sky disappearing. But yes, it's amazing how a little bit like that changed the scene. Much better without it and just a bit of pavement implying something, or other. This is what I always liked about your layouts and which ultimately inspired mine: even your smallest, like Greenville, maintained negative balance. I should finish my ground cover and start practicing with my grass applicator. Love the work you did. Any tips?

    • @moghobbystuff
      @moghobbystuff 3 дня назад

      Thank You! :-) I followed some advice using the grass applicator and applied layers.. a mix of 2mm and 4mm and a couple of different colours.. I think I struck lucky!

    • @SouthDown
      @SouthDown 2 дня назад

      Good to know. Can you recommend colours for the grass? I’ve picked up all kinds and they all look a bit … fake. Perhaps the trick is to mix and test off the layout but curious what you did. Thank you!

    • @moghobbystuff
      @moghobbystuff День назад

      A lot of them do.. I got mine from 'WSS' in the UK.. testing offscene would make a lot of sense.. I didn't but I was lucky! I used a mix of 'dry' grass and a light green for this layout, with some tufts down first.. see my May24 update around 6:30 ish :-)

    Great video as always! I also like the more open look you created in the end much better than the fence version. One of the big mistakes I did with my initial German-style layout was to overcrowd the scenery. The ops part of your video is also extremely nice. Very relaxing, I also enjoy the background sounds (doves?).

    I agree, it looks better. Initially I was not in favour of removing the fence, but with it gone it is certainly more open. Perhaps some pot holes in the concrete in the area will make a difference, to make it more disused. It's also somewhere to put your camera to catch the action in TT Milling. Perhaps a discussion for another day, is whether to put backscenes behind the buildings, and to add sky or not.

      ooh.. now there is a challenge! I think I'll leave the very pale blue for now (there are some low 'backscene' pictures at the very ends and behind the grade crossing

  • @RalphPCvids
    @RalphPCvids 8 дней назад

    That's great! Despite the shallow 12 inch depth the scene conveys a sense of distance with the building flats and the backdrop photo(s). The eye does tend to focus on your excellent details like the static grass, the beautifully weathered rolling stock (love the detailed interior of the Southern boxcar!), and the crossbuck at the grade crossing. That, and the enjoyable prototype speed switching moves! At first I liked the fence but you convinced me that, as is often the case, "less is more". Personally I'm sure I'd catch my shirt sleeve on that fence any time I felt the need to reach over to TT Milling! I look forward to seeing what you do with the little space!

  • @What_If_We_Tried
    @What_If_We_Tried 8 дней назад

    I agree that removing that fence, and backhoe tractor makes the layout look better, as now TT Milling is the main focal point. As a suggestion, at the front of your layout in that 90 corner - the part with the fascia - if you added more to the framework of the bench so that you have a curve instead of that abrupt 90 degree corner, it would not only look better; more of a natural flow, but would give your layout more breathing room as well.

    I definitely think it looks better without the fence! I’m in a similar situation where my layout has a cluttered feel due to the action being concentrated in one area of the layout. For my next build, I’m hoping to spread the industries out a bit in hopes that it relieves this problem. Great job so far, looking forward to the next update:)

    Thanks for this update. I liked your discussion of "negative space" (as Lance M. calls it). It does look better without the fence. I'd be tempted to add some discarded ties, short posts, or some other kind of low-profile barrier to replace the fence for some low-key visual interest (and to keep vehicles away from the track there). I'm building a small one-turnout diorama/micro-layout and will soon be facing similar decisions in its foreground. Cheers from Wisconsin!

    First of all don't feel in anyway that im knocking your creativity. I used to work at a feed mill and when exposed to the elements they only have one track pit, straight out from the elevator and pull the car with a cable winch to the next car pocket. Second most elevators are vertical and unload into a slanted pipe into a bin or cross auger. With all that said, you're doing a fantastic job. I love your creativity and take everything I said with a grain of salt. If it's fun that's all that matters. Believe me I appreciate your talents.

    Hi Mog, I enjoy your videos and I am a great fan of the these end to end shunting layouts. I have a 12' one which I operate on a daily basis to a daily movement roster over a two week period. I also change my industries on a regular basis and the stock to service them. This gives me plenty of variation and avoids getting bored. I have buildings which sit on the same footprint representing an Animal feed Mill, Kaolin Plant, Grain Silos, Intermodal facility, Team Track and Farm Supply Depot. In addition I run stock from the 70's and BN/BNSF.

    Another fantastic video from my hero. As much as prototypical modellers will surely chastise you for whatever wrong, I feel that if an industry looks legitimate enough it works for me. Items I can identify with such as a road size or stripes make or break a layout. But if an industry looks the part then it’s good. I’d just suggest removing the little animations asking me to subscribe. Your quality content does that for you already-just my personal pet peeve! Great switching session! Not sure if you have ever seen the Rock Island layouts of Peter North, but he would name them after his daughters. There was Hope Illinois, Florence Iowa and others. It is not unusual for small towns to just have a person's name in the US.
