JaR (Jay Graydon and Randy Goodrum) - SCENE 29 - The Cabo Cad
Jay Graydon and Randy Goodrum have worked together for many years and having written songs like e.g. GIVE IT UP for DeBarge, HAUNTING ME for Dave Grusin, PLEASURE OVER PAIN and HEART'S HORIZON for Al Jarrreau, LOST WITHOUT HER LOVE for El DeBarge and the super hit WHO'S HOLDING DONNA NOW for DeBarge, they realized they should become a band, to write more songs together and release on their own record label.
So they formed the supergroup JaR and released their first album SCENE 29 in 2008, which received rave reviews for the superb songs and stellar production. This is track 10 on the album - JaR (Jay Graydon and Randy Goodrum) - SCENE 29

"When I was in Japan promoting my album, "Airplay for the Planet", I was asked to do a video for a major TV show. They asked that I play the "Star Spangled Banner" starting with a melodic chord melody rendition and then break into a Jimi Hendrix thing. I spent a few hours in the hotel working out the chord melody part. When I got back to L.A. the song came to mind and I finished the chord melod...

The Joe Graydon TV Show on KLAC-TV in 1949 (with major audio repairs)

From 1948 through some time in the 1960's, my Dad had many local TV shows and radio shows in LA, Las Vegas, and San Diego. I have a Kinescope of one of those shows from 1948 or possibly 1949 and donated it to UCLA Film & Television Archive. After doing some research, I think the show was aired in 1949, since the song AGAIN (my Dad sang that song with the Gordon Jenkins Orchestra in February 194...

When in Japan in 1994 on tour, as you may know a major earthquake occurred in LA. My house and studio were hit hard. The rebuild took two years. When finished, I needed to do a studio test so I decided to record a surf album for fun. I called my studio musician pals that would have fun revisiting their youth. The album is very true to surf music along with major humor!!! In September 1996, I re...

Best thing ever happened airplay Best thing ever happened
High quality, top-drawer "pop" ... but way above & beyond the simplistic stuff we hear these days. The musical content here is really beautiful, sophisticated, but totally easy to listen to.
Lip syncing?
You are hearing the studio track version, NOT LIVE!
I will be seeing Joseph and Steve L in March. This will be my 3rd time.
I love this song. Such a great groove. Jay is remarkable as always. This is what musicians look like. The term artist is for those who are not musicians.
I hope that when he takes a deuce at the studio he at least keeps his shirt on. What an absolute legend. Love your work Jay. From us Aussies.
Awesome musical work! That harmonized groove break at 4:07 is so thick! Then there’s the solo exchanges on the fade out. Fantastic!
So you can adjust the EQ on each of the 88 keys? Wow that’s cool
Superb. Thank you and God bless you!
**W💖nderful!** ...🎵🎶🎬☺👍
Masterful. Thank you, Jay and company! Beautiful.
Response from Jay: "Thank you very much for your kind words! - All best, Jay"
So goooooood!
Thanks for the kind words man! - Jay
Love your work Jay, no 2 ways about it. Wayde
Excellent song and very well mixed. The bass is right there in the pocket. This is typical of Jay's work
This is a damn good tune!!!
My favorite Rhodes Sound !
Reply from Jay: "Hey Bruno, It’s not the Famous E Electric Piano as this was before we sampled the E. This is a Yamaha Motif patch I spent a lot of time on trying to get it sound as good as possible. This patch has a very strange midi velocity layout as Midi 70 is just one sample not used for any other sample. I seem to remember that one through 69 is one set of samples, 70 for just one sample and 71 through 127 is the third set. I can’t remember how I dealt with that. At some point I’ll check it as to find out what happens. I always tweak/edit velocities after the part is played. Now that we have the E sample program I don’t use any other Rhodes sample but at the time it was better than other programs. Anyway, I’m glad you like the sound but have you tried the E yet? It has 18 layers of velocities meaning 18 separate samples. We recorded 30 individual velocities but after we listened very carefully, all we needed was 18 as they all are distinct sounds the Rhodes has to offer. Further, there is no sample looping as we let all the samples decay until they were no longer audible. Every time you play chords in the program, keep in mind that every time we recorded individual samples that builds up noise wise. For example if you played five notes in a chord, that equals running through the E electronics 5 times. Even though the E is very quiet, on one of the early updates of the E, Greg denoised all the sample sets to drop the noise level down to -90 dB. That leads to the fact I think this is the quietest Rhodes sample set available! If you have the E, have you tried the stereo mode in the advanced section? I think we have the only Rhodes that has a true stereo mode where are the notes pan from left to right or you can reverse it so the loan notes start at the highest point. Another thing we did was, I dislike the release samples as that was a mechanical flaw Harold Rhodes couldn’t get rid of. To get rid of the release samples, in the advanced section, you can set the decay time (release time) of the samples from 1 to 300 milliseconds. Not only do you get rid of the release samples that are annoying, if you use an acoustic piano sample program along with the E, you can adjust the decay time with that control to match the piano decay time! There are a bunch of other great features as well! So if you don’t have the E, check it out as I think you really dig it! jaygraydon.com/The_Famous_E_Electric_Piano.htm All best, Jay"
@@kerstinolofsson2790 Hey Jay, all the years I have followed your work I wanted to tell you something: one of the best harmonic cord progressions in history is in your song "mornin" in the bridge after the 2nd verse, when Al sings "my smiling face....". It is genius !! It opened a new door for me and I have to thank you very much for the inspiration !!

BILL CANTOS needs more screen time here. Without him, we wouldn’t be able to hear the triumphant ROXANN war cry that only CANTOS can execute. #justiceforCANTOS #screentimeforCANTOS #please.
This is awesome. I learn a lot by watching Jay's videos. That sound ( E Electric piano) brings me back to the Jarreau albums, when I first started buying them in high school getting into the LA session scene, and the history they were making back then. Being a drummer, I was blown away by Gadd and Porcaro tracks. Also the rest of the musician's that played on all of the tracks. Those were magical times.
Saw Bill Champlin in there on more keyboards
Almost looks like a toto line up and song ! Steve Porcaro on keys by the way. Jay is a PHENOMENAL musician. Love these cats
Were the Graydon All Stars a regular assembly of studio musicians? Can we identify them all by name? Porcaro on keys stage right, maybe? He looked 30 years younger I guess.....doesn't resemble him today, but I guess could be him. Williams did a stint as front-man for Lukather & Company when Kimball went AWOL, correct? He has that kind of voice. Didn't recognize any other Toto members....drummer is an enigma, bass player, etc. Excellent acoustics and audio overall. It sounded like music from the 80's and early 90's.
he's re-re-re-re-re-mixing the 2nd record....better be a 2x cd
Simba is that you?
Love the tension brought to the chorus by the bass, makes it really touching
A 6/8 time does translate and indeed feel better with a 3/4 in the last bar.. of a eight bar sequence. The feel of the tempo change is the accent placement and essentially setting up a turn around. Nice job there Jay!
Thank you and all in this project, to let a dream come true.......
That was terrific. You’re still the best. Happy holidays to you
My fave! Thank you Jay! Thank you Stefan! 😊👍
perfect storm of talents in one room.
joseph williams-one of the greatest vocalist ever. Tone and range is awesome.
Great lesson.
Do you still have your old Valley Arts telecaster style guitar?
