This was great. I wasn't a Steelers fan myself, but growing up in the Gong, there really was a sense of pride for our home team and our home-grown players, even if they weren't your first team. Still remember as a kid when they made the prelim in 92 ironically losing to St George. And Brett Rodwell and Mary McGregor visiting our school. I think a lot of people sadly forget the ILLAWARRA part of the joint merge. It's not St George, it is St George-Illawarra.

I couldn't get on board with the merger. I really disliked St George beforehand. And after moving away in 1999 to places where there wasn't a local club, I lost interest in the NRL. Ironically, after moving to the AFL heartland Melbourne of all places, I got on board with the Storm, and have supported them ever since. I just like having a local side nearby. At that point (2003), they were still playing out of Olympic Park - a basic local-style ground with an atmosphere similar to 'Wollongong Showground'. But as much as I've enjoyed following Melbourne closely over al these years, even their crowd has nothing on the glorious noise those at WIN Stadium could make. Following the Steelers was a tribal and passionate affair (as it was the Hawks and the Wolves), and to be honest felt a lot less 'corporate' than being a fan does now. Often you can hear a pin drop at AAMI Park when the Storm aren't playing so well. Very reserved and sterile. But even when the Steelers were trailing by 30 at the 75 minute mark, Steelers fans would still make a huge ruckus. They were OUR team, not Kogarah's.

thanks - I share so many of Tony's sentiments. Well before the Steelers, my father taught me to "intensely dislike" the Dragons. I know it's silly but since they merged I still cant get on the Dragon wagon. The Graham Murray (RIP) years were magic. I was at Manly the night we had to, and did, win to get into our first semi-finals. On the hill at Newcastle having things thrown at me in my Steelers jumper. Win or lose, and more often than not the latter, they were our team.

St George should have merged with Cronulla Sharks. Such a shame that Sydney-centric clubs have been kept alive while regional teams: Canberra, Newcastle and Illawarra have suffered over the last two decades.

I think the Steelers were unlucky to miss out on standing alone because amongst the lowly teams, they were probably the most consistent.

Illawarra Steelers should have not merged since their “shared club” St George Illawarra Dragons have almost erased them other than “Illawarra” being in the club name

They should never have merged for numerous reasons... one being that Illawarra is not a Sydney club like Saints are, and secondly Cronulla Sutherland is in between the St George and the Illawarra...as a Sharks supporter I like the Steelers yet I deplore how Saints just took over... the Steeltown rivalry with Newcastle diminished plus it turned Steelers fans against the Sharks when Shire and Gong are friendly neighbours. Your colours have been streamlined as red and white; why not re, white and scarlet in the merger?? The merger was senseless.

I went to the first game back at Wentworth Park. Growing up I always knew who Glebe were but I didn't think they would ever come back in any shape or form but here they are. A lot of good players came through Glebe and Wentworth Park has a lot of history.
