Landing at Corvallis (KCVO) with gusty winds at night, 7/17/2018
Просмотров 596 лет назад
I figured I'd hit Corvallis as part of a night flight around the Willamette Valley. It's usually very calm around here after dark so I was surprised when I tuned in the AWOS and found winds were gusting over 20 knots. Could've had it stopped in 200 feet if I'd wanted to - really slow groundspeed at touchdown!

Landing and Takeoff from Oakridge State (5S0)

Oakridge State is located in a valley, surrounded by 4,000-6,000' mountains. When the winds get whipping, it can quickly become an "interesting" approach (and departure).
Salem, OR (KSLE) Total Solar Eclipse Arrival, 8/21/2017
Просмотров 456 лет назад
52 airplanes converged on Salem between 8:32 am and 9:00 am on the morning of the eclipse (and over 100 between 7:30 am and 9:00 am). This was the result. I condensed the video slightly to remove blocked transmissions (these result in audio squeals) and the 15 or so seconds where no one was talking...

Landing at Pacific City (KPFC), 4/22/2018

We flew over to Pacific City State Airport today to have a late lunch with family. Pacific City is always a bit of a challenge due to the narrow, short runway; and was even more so today with variable winds gusting between 10 and 20 knots.

For one day, anyway! 75 knot winds nearly directly behind me meant a groundspeed of around 170 knots (~190 mph).

After I landed at Lakeside, I went down to North Bend and then back up the coast to Florence.

I haven't done much off-pavement flying this summer. My grass strip technique could use some work, so I decided to cruise the half-hour or so over to Lakeside on the coast. Lakeside is a nice little grass strip, though it had been awhile since the mower had come through! Winds at North Bend were reported at 360 @ 18G26. The terrain at Lakeside breaks that up a bit and the runway is 15/33 so it ...

Lake Billy Chinook State (5S5), 4/6/2016

Lake Billy Chinook is a small sealed gravel strip (2500' x 32') near Madras, OR. The AF/D clearly states "animals on and in vicinity of airport." The deer that sprints off the runway just before I touch down is a reminder that they put these things in the book for a reason. I dropped down low on the way back out to clear the runway for the next guy. :)

This was just the start of a bumpy day at the beach. Summer winds along the coast can be pretty strong in afternoon and early evening. I arrived at Newport just before the wind really picked up (around 1:30pm).
Creswell to Cascade Locks, 9/25/2015

This was the first time I'd taken the 172 into a smaller strip. Cascade Locks is 1800' long by 30' wide. I got a bit shy of the water on short final so touched down a little further down the runway than I'd like. Ah well.

Nice shot of the jetties...used to be a deckhand on a boat back in the 70s. Talk about bumpy!

My Cherokee 180 record is 186 mph verified by a photo of the GPS in flight. I have it somewhere in my files.

Hey there, glad it was helpful. I was up a couple weeks ago and the runway is in ok shape. A few cracks but didn't really notice in a 172.

Enjoy the tailwind, most times it is a headwind. I remember once in my Cherokee 140 flying due south and there were cars on the highway heading due south passing me.

A textbook example of what not to do. Looks like the flaps + wind change almost did this pilot in.

Agreed...looks like 20 or even 30 degrees... I certainly don't recall any 172 POH where that is the recommended takeoff setting.

I'm thinking this was originally supposed to be a touch-n-go and the PIC forgot to raise the flaps? The sinking later could be the result of him raising the flaps once he realized his mistake? At least he didn't stall the airplane.

    • @cirritus6738
      @cirritus6738 6 лет назад

Hard to say on his/her intentions. I don't see the flaps retracting on the departure. Looks more like the headwind shifted/sheared into a crosswind and downdraft. Yuck.
