Opening some new Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars
Try and go to Hawaii man. It’s so impossible to see any JDM cars as peg warmers. It’s impossible. Depends on the state I guess.
I went to Maui a few years ago and could not find anything good neither in Walmart nor in Target. It reminded me my hometown with only junk sitting on the pegs or in in the dump binz for weeks. I bought one HW car in there only because it had a "Hawaii" sticker on it.
very neat and tidy display! i like the batman, wonder woman and green lantern hws
It's a smart way to display HW cars on cork boards!
Let me just give an unsolicited perspective from an Asian collector. this gonna be long...LOL. Being from a region that is predominantly a Japanese car market, it is of no surprise that we crave for JDM inspired castings. During the last decade we have seen the burgeoning rise of global collectors and increase in JDM castings. This aint new, this craving for JDM cars has been there even from the start of the new century albeit not on the scale of the much larger Asian market we have today. Take for example one of the most iconic casting that was released back in 2010 - the Godzilla Nissan GTR R34 designed by the legendary Phil Riehlman. It went off the shelves so fast and is one of the most sought after and still fetches very good price in the secondary market. This was around that time too that Asian collectors has begun to grow. Fast forward to this day. HW and Mattel has already seen this rise, both in market and casting preference, for that reason that another one of the more iconic design was released - the Civic, which has a huge market culture in Asia particularly in the SouthEast, it was inevitable that they wont see the light of day in pegs and displays. From the R34, to the Nissan Skyline H/T 2000GT-X, R33, R32, Fairlady Z, Skyline C210, Datsun 71, Subarus, Supras, Evos....down to the latest - the Civic, the JDM hype is not just a hype but more of a cultural trend spurred up by the Asian collector demographic. This in turn spills over the US as demand for these castings has begun to be felt...and of course, the dreaded speculator and scalpers. This is no different from the clamor for great castings such as the DragBus, Dairy Delivery, Gassers, VW T1, Beetle, BoneShaker, Hummer just to name a few, that has more following globally. And here is where it will get more interesting, although Mattel/HW is already behind this trend as brands like Majorette and Matchbox has already had success on them, is if they release the more common commercial JDM design, its gonna be a flurry. the Sentras, Corollas, Pajeros, Suzuki (Pipes Peak anyone?) - heck they should also collaborate with Jack Chan and his Lancer collection used in his movies...LOL
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and observations - it is priceless! However, as I pointed in my video and called that "a hype" you described something similar but under "a cultural trend" title. Even though, the mass market "loves" certain castings, I was appealing to "individuals" and their desire to collect what they like rather than something, what their surrounding told them to. :)
You've got it wrong. Those JDM's were returned to the store because the scalpers couldn't sell them on the secondary market
LOL. I seriously doubt it!
Americans love JDM because they were forbidden there. Aust, NZ, South East Asia had JDM and loved them. Personally, the Hot Wheels scale for Honda's is way off CRX similar size to Hummer, which puts me off, but I still buy JDM as I grew up idolizing them (from NZ) probably as you idolize Volkswagen and Mercedes (which I have no connection with)
I see what you are saying but again this is generalization and by saying that certain groups love certain types of cars or makes you imply that there is some sort of idea that shared by the group, not each individual. But I hear ya. :)
People ARE buying and collecting what they want. Scalpers ARE scalping what people want. Young generation love the JDM cars, in the US at least. They don't care for the VW or the Gullwing you showed. When I tell them I have a Nissan GT-R and a Porsche Turbo (in real life), all they care about is the Nissan. You just have to accept that popularity shifted.
This is what I'm saying - the whole "young generation" cannot love the JDM cars - it is a hype artificially created for the "young generations", they are NOT collecting what they want, they ARE collecting what they are TOLD to collect. But I agree with you - people ARE buying what they want, not necessarily what they like.
I’d rather have the Porsche lol 🤙🏻❤️
I collect what I like Preminum or Basic & found One Ford Escort RS2000 Treasure Hunt last week @ CVS.. ! ✌
Awesome! This one I am missing! :)
You found a th or sth honda s2000? Cvs...what? How?
Good grab!.. that’s the 1 that eludes me!.. the more I look at it I like it.. and at CVS! Great hunting brother 🤙🏻
@@jaamilmaalik8671 Those are premiums from the Car Culture set
I knew you were European before I even opened the video, as JDM is the craze in both Asia and North America. I blame the Fast and Furious movie franchise for creating that craze, also most collectors dreaming about the Supra/NSX/R34/RX-7 are old enough now (between 30-40 yrs old) to be able to afford the 1:1 in some case (buy your childhood heroes).
Yeah, you are not the first one mentioning F&F... and i joined this hobby here, in North America - what i brought to this hobby is probably my mentality and background - yes, in (Eastern) Europe we like German cars :) and even now Japanese cars are rated on the same level (if not lower) than South Korean cars :)
Then you are missing a key part of being a car enthusiast. I was a Honda hater during my V8 days (Trans Am, GTO). Now I own an RSX Type S and I GET IT.
Oh, I get it - for many it is probably their first real car or something "hot" but also is what can be afforded... But imagine getting an AMG or M3?
Ironically in 40-50 years the unpopular cars that got thrown away will often be the most valuable. They will be the rarest.
Absolutely, I am tired of picking on Skylines but it was the case just 4 years ago - no one cared about them. And hey, stock up on muscle cars - you will be rich in 50 years! :)
For me personally, it really depends on the JDM. The Civics and hatches are not bad cars, but they're just a little boring for me. But I do like Honda's other cars however, such as the S2000 and the NSX because those were true sports cars. My favorite thing however, are the the classic European luxury/sports cars. But mostly I just consider myself a car enthusiast in general. You also have a lot of new collectors that are into the whole street/tuning culture with JDM, so that also buys into the hype a little. The only thing I don't like about the JDM craze is that the hype takes viewers away from my channel, but otherwise it takes the attention off most of the cars I actually do like. So sometimes it all works out in the end. Thanks, I enjoyed this little discussion.
Thank you for your comment! I am not against collectors buying JDMs, I do not understand when they buy and collect them only because they are JDMs. Also, in my city many collectors are quite aggressive and if they see card they have but they know those are desirable and on demand - they would buy them all anyway creating more hype!
@@AJMancaveHobbies Fair points and I agree!👍🏾💯
A scalper is a toy investor. Why are you telling people to not invest in what other people like?
Despite the fact I hate scalpers cuz they ruined this hobby, i did not say not to invest in whatever you want. My video was for collectors, not scalpers, and I was trying to bring common sense to their hyped absolutely unreasonable purchasing habits. And why dont they instead invest in Lego and Barbies - leave the HWs alone! LOL
@@AJMancaveHobbies You hate toy investors? Why?
@@oatybuck I dont! In fact, in my next video I will prove everyone that scalpers are the good guys!
Skylines are so overrated. Give me a Karmann Ghia instead. I do like older Hondas, though - like the N600.
There is always something special for everyone, man!
Dessert Dragster is the only true grail
Cannot say I am a big fan of those but hey, if this is what you like, bro! ;)
I blame the fast and furious franchise. I personally go for air cooled VW’s and gassers.
I like Gassers and have quite a few!
What I find weird is I don’t like vw’s much in real life but there castings look great and I grab everyone I find!. Honestly it’s 1 of the better castings out there. Especially the vw drag bus and beetles 🤙🏻
As a huge JDM fan (Especially of Hondas) from the United States, I was initially biased to disagree with you but I enjoyed watching this a lot. Compared to the Mercedes, Audis, Toyotas, Fords, and other cars of similar eras, the Civic is pretty damn boring looking. I think for a lot of JDM fans in the States at least, our love of the cars isn't so much from the design or looks but the culture, performance, (generally) reliability, tuneability/modibility, and notoriety of the Civics in subcultures of street and city driving/racing. My family only bought Hondas (typically Accords and Civics) and that really gave me the Civic and Honda "bug" so to speak growing up. Got into racing them, driving and owning Civics myself, and just started to collect models and Hot Wheels of them at some point. But I totally get how they can look boring and stupid compared to a lot of other cars from Japan and other countries.
You got it, man! See, you and your family have a history with Hondas (what a coincidence), so you like those and you tend to buy them. And this is exactly what I was trying to say - most likely whoever bought those "peg warmers" Miatas had some sentimental memories or experience with them! I am not against ppl buying Honda HWs - I am trying to promote meaningful collecting not falling for whatever is "the current thing"! Thank you for sharing your story.
I collect a bit of everything from jdm to semi trucks, some odd wierd stuff but i absolutely love american muscle cars and american trucks. Obviously there is certain castings that the majority loves that i also collect but sometimes im thankful that certain stuff gets left on the pegs so i can get it.
After i read it i had the same thought - I am thankful that some castings are unpopular, and I am able to buy these cars I like without any issues! :) I collect trucks as well - american ones look so much better than japanese ones! :)
If there are any guys from Asia and South America - can you share your thoughts and stories may be as well?
Australia as well please!
I don’t get all the American muscle cars HW make, they sit on the pegs in UK stores. I would rather they made cars for each market
Awesome, it means we will not be getting JDM cars outside of Japan. Most of American makes are peg warmers in Canada and the US. I am not following the logic at all. I talked to some collectors asking, why the main line Bugatti Chiron was so popular - the answer was that it is because they were the most expensive cars. By this logic all the Civics should be forever on the pegs. :) I actually like seeing HW cars from various markets and by Opels and Holdens because I like them despite the fact they are sitting on the pegs for months and months.
It's the scalpers homie. Most collectors I know love American muscle or German cars. If you're a fan of JDM, buy mini gt, or kaido, better quality same money spent with scalpers
Well, if scalpers take them then they are on demand meaning that there is still hype on JDMs. Also, just bought my first Kaido Datsun - will review it soon and compare to the premium HW.
@AJMancaveHobbies I got my first kaido and it was amazing. Also the scalpers hoard them but I personally don't see them sell all that much.
@@alexanderlopez4527 i think there is no hype on those yet, except the black editions. I have not got mine yet but very excited to unbox it. I never seen them in the wild except specialized stores though.
It depends in which part of the world you live and where are you coming from. Where I live, JDMs are the thing to collect. This is mirrored by the car market, where Japanese cars are the most popular. Europeans models are next, but nobody collects American cars here.
Good point, I heard that 4runners were peg warmers in Australia and Holdens are peg warmers in North America. I guess popularity needs to be defined - if general population is poor or rich then different cars will be popular. And it is quite sad american cars are not popular among collectors - first HW cars were either muscle cars or fantasy cars, this is how it started.
I wonder if in any part of the world Skylines are peg warmers? LOL
I often like the peg warmers, the most. Sometimes, I just want to complete a set. The Acura from a Boulevard series, is my least favorite of the set, it's the only one I can't find.
Exactly! Where I live all relatively decent cars are being scalped though. We have another video on our channel from Walmart showing shelves and pegs filled with cars no one wats.
