What did Aunt Jemima say to Uncle Ben? You're a credit to your rice. All the hot guitar players would always want to see Elvin, because he just wailed and put on a great show. He had the toughness to make it on the road, he played clubs big and small all over the country for forty years, and American original, he gave us some great times.

Just as an interesting point of the timeline that some of this refers to, I was a white musician from " down" in Indianapolis while Wes was still alive, but becoming increasingly interested in learning how to improvise on guitar. One of my guitar teachers introduced me to the first Butterfield album, and he had met Eric Clapton here in the States. At almost the same time, I happened by total accident, to meet both of the Baughman brothers, who were originally from Arlington Heights, but had started to visit Indianapolis when their family moved down here to " lower the pressure " on their father who had suffered some health setbacks. Both of these brothers were definitely involved in the visiting and learning from the black musicians in the Blues clubs in Chicago, and Dan eventually played with the Shadows of Knight, who were managed by the guy that ran the teen club " the Cellar " ( Paul Sampson I believe ). I eventually had some luck with what might be called " regionally famous " rock bands touring largely the interior parts of the country. Eventually I moved to Denver, then all over the country and spent three years studying more formally at Berklee in Boston. Then after classical guitar studies, I played in the hotels around Lake Tahoe, forcing me to be able to play 5 1/2 hours of solo instrumental guitar a night ( for $79.92 / night..union scale and it never changed ). It was killing me; but it didn't. I had to move beyond the three chord progressions, just to keep everything from sounding the same, but my roots will always be in that stuff. It's less intellectual, but more " to the heart . " I'm sure that I was very happy to see the Butterfield Band added late one night in a performance at " the Electric Theatre " a rock palace with a 360 deg movie screen all the way around the ballroom. A " goin' concern " at that time. My " hat's off " to Elvin here and all the folks he worked so hard with over the years.

I really fell into Elvin Bishop when I saw him and his band back up Dickey Betts at ~Radio City Music Hall~ when Betts was touring with his special band, ~The Great American Music Show~ which showcased the BEST in country/bluegrass, like ~John Hughey~ the worlds best pedal steel player,, and,, the great fiddle player, Vassar Clements!!! I was a serious Allman brothers fan, and I was lucky to have been able to see Elvin Bishop's band!!! Elvin blew the stage down!!! He was such a funky blues/rock player, and nobody else was playing that way!!! I interviewed The Paul Butterfield Blues Band at a concert they gave at South Hampton College back in the mid-seventies. Paul was such a great host, and I still remember that interview, and very fondly too!!!
