Anyone know why they are using the busways colours are stagecoach going back to the classic 90s the busses look so much better in them colours.

At around the end of this video, you may have seen a group of people at the back of 701, that was me and a few others, we were allowed on it's run back to Heworth via Seaton Carew as we were invited on. Let's just say was way better than getting 6377 all the way back.

Hardly recognize this station any more, although the columns and the curvature appear familiar... Certainly very much neater than recalled (both track and buildings) - where - as a 'lad' I worked in BR Thornaby Area Civil Engineer's office and was expected to apply for permission to attend Technical College (aka "Tech"). Our maintenance Area included Hartlepool - which had its own "section" office where I think the local Track Inspector was a nice bloke by the name of Mattison - and our mileage included Horden, Saltburn, the stub of the "coast" line towards Loftus, all the way to Whitby and I believe southwards towards Northallerton (N.B. I have forgotten the 'mileages' of the point where "our" Area ended and another Area began, since my BR employment in the North of England ended some fifty years ago, when I was lucky enough to escape to BR's Colchester Area where I was at once treated as a man and given REAL responsibilities! However, before this I attended Teesside Polytechnic with my Darlington office counterpart for the HND in Civil Engineering. Railway life was very interesting indeed, if nothing else!!!

That's the first time I've heard a 555 on video that is. They seem pretty peppy compared with the old fleet.

I also worked in the Thornaby Area Assistant Divisional Civil Engineer's Office as a Technical Officer between 1967 and 1971 - before a thankful promotion - and escape at last(!) - to Colchester, where I was Area Technical Officer working for a great boss. (Incredibly I met this retired engineer from Thornaby very many years later in my local (Kelvedon) station car park. My work at Colchester was never checked - I had to know from the outset never to raise the track above what was permitted beneath the 25KV overhead line and always to achieve 12 inches of fresh ballast beneath the new (or relaid) track. It was difficult at times to satisfy both requirements.

Highbury & Islington station is quite a hub, with the Victoria Line, Overground lines running to Startford, Richmond and Clapham Junction (which can be via Willesden Junction, or else via whitechapel), and the Great Northern Line which runs from Moorgate. I very clearly recall the old Eaglescliffe of four platforms (plus a very cosy Refreshment Room selling Smiths Crisps at 2d a bag) almost from infancy, instance when going to the seaside (Redcar or Saltburn behind an 'A5' or 'A8' class) or in later years joining the "midnight" train to Kings Cross. There was a signalbox on the end of the northbound island platform and another "Eaglescliffe South" that was set back opposite the south end of the station. Dad often worked as a Relief Clerk at Eaglescliffe. His brother was a coalman - the horse stable was close to the wide covered footbridge. My first job on BR was as a Junior in the Darlington District Engineer's Office in 1966 - the 08.11 got me there by 08.30. Hardly recognise this station now, but certainly recall the northbound island platform being taken out of use. A silver St. John's Ambulance shield used to hang in a glass-fronted case on the platform nearest the road but this "disappeared" one night...

From 1967-71, I worked as a (very!) "misguided youth" (junior technical assistant) - in the B.R. Civil Engineering Department office, a wooden single-storey building perched on the Middlesbrough end of Thornaby station looking out onto Tees Yard and the circular "steam-age" roundhouse. There were still Q6s, WDs and other steam classes at work then, plus many English Electric Type 3s (now Class 37) on freight workings - pushing or pulling their Diesel Brake Tenders (these sat atop old Gresley passenger coach bogies). I don't suppose I'd recognise this place now (having moved to the south over fifty years since) - but there was a very good bike shop nearby that catered for my needs as a keen (if impoverished) racing cyclist..

Great video, I really enjoyed it. I have been on an ex avanti voyager from Banbury to Birmingham and I have got to say, the ex avanti voyagers now with cross country are beyond excellent. They are even using the buffet/ shop onboard which is beyond excellent. Still a while to wait but in May 2025 cross country will be reinstating an hourly ( fingers crossed) service from Reading to Newcastle via Doncaster and York. I personally cannot wait as the Reading to Newcastle services divert via Solihull and avoid Coventry and Birmingham international and as a result, are not as overcrowded. Only problem is, not enough reinstated. I cannot wait for next year for cross country. Great video once again. I have subscribed by the way.
