I remember talking to Renaldo between 1994 and 1998 when I lived in Pennsylvania. He was fun to to talk to on the Lancaster area VHF and UHF repeaters.

If you turn off Autosky ANNOUNCEMENTS you will loose some announcements. Also leave AUTOSKY ANNOUNCMENTS TURNED ON, so you received timed events notifications and other notifications. With this setup when you connect to a node, you will hear it twice. With AUTOSKY ANNOUNCE OFF, you will no longer hear certain functions!

I have a ladder similar to that and have sometimes looked at it and thought "I wonder if I could load this up and use it as an antenna." but have never actually tried it. You went and did it and it worked far better than I would have ever thought. That's pretty cool! Thanks for sharing this.

Is there anything that talks about how other than speech, the modified firmware is different from the stock firmware? The manual that came with the radio is probably useless because you are using modified stuff. For example I learned to use the knob from this video that I watched a long time ago and I'm coming back to now. It would've never occurred to me before to press the knob. So I'm not sure if there is a manual anywhere that is written for the modified from where, or if there is something written down that says how they modified from where is different than the stock from where other than speech. I'm also not sure if a new version came out and what the differences are. I thought I was reading something about that a few days ago but don't know.

Great presentation Bob. I use a 9:1 unun and was wondering if you have experimeted with making the secondary winding "tunable" to help make a better impdeance match at the antenna feed point?

I do worry that even though everything else about this radio sounds great, it only gives you 10 W of power and that is only if you have it connected to an external power supply with only 5 W using the battery. I understand that it's not about power completely and it's about your antenna and some people don't know about antennas so they try to make up for it with extra power. But maybe power does have a significant impact. For my situation, I was hoping for about 25 W of power to be available to me. Apparently they only make amplifiers that will give you 100 W and so much power is not appropriate or advisable for my situation. I know I could listen, but I want other people to be able to hear me versus may not making it through most of their squelch functions. But a lot of the HF radios come with 100 W even though they are really expensive and maybe there is a reason for that? Or do they just come with way too much power that most people won't use? I just want to talk to people in other states and possibly internationally. I just get bored with VHF and UHF because I can only access the 70 cm and 2 m band right now. I can't get that far on simplex. Repeaters seem to mostly be silent. The Kenwood accessible UHF and VHF radio seems to be just as expensive as this HF radio that can do way more bands. because I'm low income, I was hoping for a radio that could last 5 to 10 years so that's why having access to all of the bands is appealing to me because you never know which ones are going to be open, whether you will be on during the day or the night, and what the solar cycle is doing.

So this radio and the Kenwood radios are probably the only accessible options we have for HF. I'm really glad you are working hard to make this affordable Radio more accessible and would do anything I could to support you. Perhaps there is a way to make it a public open source project like how NVDA is so other people could help with the coding. You could talk to the people at NVDA to see how they set up their project including with safeguards so people wouldn't be using the code in Waze that are not in the spirit of open source and non-commercialization. I'm not sure that you understand what I mean by software to find Radio. I hardly know anything about radios and I just learned about this myself, but a software defined radio is not a radio that uses cat control or whatever that is. A software defined Radio is software on a computer that is the entire brain, the entire internal workings, and the entire processing of the radio. The computer is the radio essentially, and if my understanding is correct, you plug-in an antenna and a transceiver into the computer to give it the extra parts that it needs to be a complete radio. In software defined radios, whatever you buy to plug-in, which I think is a transceiver, cannot function without the computer. The reason I was wondering about it is because there are so many SDR's, both of the transceiver and the software. But I can't find any articles about blind people using these and I don't understand why. On this website named envision Radio or something like that, there is supposed to be a page that talks about accessible SDR's, but when you go to it, it says Paige not found. I would like to talk to you off of this platform if you are open to it. I just don't have any resources about what to do. The only blind people I know use Kenwood radios, which for HF are going to cost over $2000, or they use an accessible ones that they keep on certain frequencies and memories and have extensive sighted help to operate. I don't have cited people to constantly do that for me, and I value accessibility as a human right and want to only surround myself with accessible things because lack of accessibility is triggering to me.

This might be off the topic of this radio, but I can't find a lot of information about blind people using software to find radios. I learned about it recently, and for those like me who don't know a lot about it, this is talking about specific terminology, not a radio that you can plug into a computer, But basically a transceiver and an antenna that you plug into a computer I believe, where the majority of the radio is actually the software that's on your computer. Someone I was talking to had said I should look into a software to find Radio and I kept getting confused because I thought this radio is a software to find radio but the terminology is completely different. Why aren't blind people using those?

I do think it's needed because it's not fair that the majority of blind people are low income, yet we are stuck paying for more expensive brands because those are the only accessible ones or we just can't do HF when we would have been able to had we been sighted.

Can this firmware also work on the G 90 or whatever the 20 W one is called?

The speech is hard to understand I truly hope in the next version they improve the speech and at least have it cover all functions of The Radio. The robot voice is a non-starter. I truly hope that they can come out with a more realistic voice.. One other thing so that radio don’t cover 2 m and 70 cm? Is it that you would need some modification to cover those two bands? Since The Radio says those two bands I would assume it does them, can you test it out and see if those two bands actually work on the radio. Thanks.

I like the in formation but i really dislike one of the guys eating/chewing into the microphone while listening. I guess that HAM isn't only blind but also a little bit deaf. LOL sorry

I wouldn’t of recommended that radio, because it’s useless for a blind ham. I believe to be useful for a blind ham at minimal the manual, and the radio must coincide when it comes to settings and other things, and the fact the voice prompts do not cover the entire menu and doesn’t tell you what you are selecting when you get into a particular setting is troubling. Now for a sided operator just for throw a ray radio I guess it’s better than nothing. It was kind for the company to ask you for your opinion, and I do respect your opinion, and I myself would have to tell the company exactly where the shortcomings of that radio lie, and to all of the blind hams, I would have to be honest and let them know this is not a good radio for you, but again, I guess it would be useful for a cited person. That’s looking for a throwaway radio as I said previous. Look forward to the next video, thanks. KE8SUR.

How long should counterpoise wires be? I have read everything from 0.05 wavelength of each band to 1/4 wavelength for each band. I find by adding cp wires, one band will improve in swr while another band swr is negatively impacted. I am currently working with a 58’ wire to a 9:1 unun and 50’ rg8x. I haven’t found counterpoise wire lengths that work for each band. Any ideas?

if I have a 55 foot antenna with a choke 12 feet down on the cable where do I put the antenna tuner under the 1:4 unun or behind the choke??? . LA2VLA.

Mine just cycles. Trying to use it through our local repeater. Set on 146.13/73. Announces the ip address and then cycles.

Well hello there from Coplay, Pennsylvania. First, I am not a ham though some might disagree with that statement. I'm sure you get the joke. Now, what I'm really interested in is FM HD radio. I would love to find an FM HD radio that provides excellent FM sensitivity. I would like any feedback concerning these radios.

I have a GD 77 and I put the firmware and the last year is there an update? Because I don’t think I have those functions on my current software. It would’ve been helpful if he would explained how to do those functions as well
