My favorite I ever did was in a 5e game. He was essentially the dhampir equivalent of a Jiang-shi and had to feed on Chi. He was absolutely the "party dad," always making sure the individual party members were in good spirits and always gave sagely advice. Sadly, he finally wound up in a fight he couldn't handle, but he saved the rest of the party in one move by raising the drawbridge, thus separating himself from the party. His final words to the party all screaming for him to flee? "Live"

Great idea. There is a lesser known dragon from the early days of DnD. The purple dragon it has an attack like this.

I like the idea of using HP and damage output to balance encounters, but I don't think I would usually make the bosses as player characters and rather just change the numbers on the stat block to better fit the party and how hard I want the fight to be

Note: alot of the monsters in the monster manual are mythological monsters often striped of cultural context eg the TARASQUE is a french monster. So do a little digging the death kiss may be public domain (or the origin may be cooler than the monster)
