Fish disease case nr. 250 Grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, with a mix of serious infections
People talk about this disease in particular with discus and oscar. But in fact it's everywhere. I diagnosed a small killifish with spironucleus based on stringy stool and microscope exam. It took 3 weeks for metronidazole to arrive in my country, and by then the fish was no longer eating at all and was floating upside down. On day 5 of the treatment, the fish miraculously recovered and began to swim, and a week later it returned completely normal. Parasitic infections (if treatable) are not as immediately lethal as bacterial, probably because the inflammatory response is not as severe.
Thanks for your info! Very helpfull! Yes, Spironucleus (used to be called Hexamita) also occurs in other fish....but mostly in the Cichlids. And you are 100% correct: fish can live long with it...untill secondary bacterial infections appear after damage of the microbiome and the gut line. Keep up the good diagnostic work!
I thought bloodworms were really good for my fish. What should i be feeding my African leaf fish?
Thanks for your question! Bloodworms can be good...depending on the source, the area of collection and the handling procedures during freezing, shipping or packing, etc. If you are not sure, try to feed not too much: this means avoiding risks because who can tell you if they are 'free from bacteria like Mycobacterium'?
@@GeraldBassleer thankyou!!!
another great video, very informative
Thank you for the info !
Hello, free from parasites discus fish, it's really or not?
100% free of parasites (or bacteria) is never possible! But to have few parasites doesn't mean infection nor disease! Only when stress, lack of immunity, poor care, etc. makes the fish proneable to an outbreak...and an infection!
good to know because most of the time this speices has something no right with it when imported normally ick
👍
Very informative informative information 😊 thanks for your interview and knowledge!!
Great videos !!! ❤
Thanks for your video and knowledge. I'm going to start feeding only your food. It's challenging to get though. Anything for plecos?
always something new
Thank you!
Hi! I have a julli Cory i bought like 1 week ago. He was just fine the first 4 days but 2 days ago he started to dart to the tank and breathes(single inhalation) and goes back to rhe bottom. He kind of gets carried away by the water and sometimes floats slowly if he stops swimming. Sometimes he swims normally. He is also panting but still eats. What do you think?
This is difficult to give an accurate answer or diagnosis! It seems that fish was not in good shape OR that the fish doesn't do well with your current conditions of the aquarium! Normally Corydoras come to the surface to gasp for air! Maybe your feeding contaminated frozen or live food? Suggestion= Try feeding with a functional food that aids the fish (like our DR. BASSLEER BIOFISH FOOD FORTE) to build up health & strength.
I've seen something similar in bala sharks and wasn't sure what it was now I think I know what it was , thanks again 👍
Very nice video, thank for your share, Dr!
The statistics about how many batches of fish have the infection are not encouraging for a fishkeeper. Those levels suggest that you will almost certainly find it in your tank at some point, and it will wipe out most of your fish, and the chances of that are high. Does quarantine help in any way?
Dear, Mycobacterium is common in nature...it is a natural bacteria. Only weakened fish with poor immune system (usually due to bad fish keeping or old age) are getting sick or die from it. Quarantine is no help and only good maintenance and good feeding!
Sehr gutes Video
Thank you ❤for this series 🙏
Thanks
thank you sir
Thanks for that movie and thanks for you excellent book:)
Great video🎉 I recently got a bunch of new tetra fish and am having multiple deaths a day in my fully cycled tank. What do you think it's most likely to be? They have no real symptoms they just kinda stop swimming and kinda floating around then die. Lost 20+ fish
When quick mortality....usually bad water conditions, poisoning, bacterial infection....
Love you content, please improve the audio and video so that many more people can learn from you
Yeah I've got to let him fast for a bit.
My 15 angelfish fries also have this kind of problem what do to ?
This parasite can also occur in Angelfish. Has this parasite been diagnosed from your fry?
Very helpful video! I’ve had a group of cardinals in quarantine for 2 months as one has a bubble on its side. Another ended up with bubbles on its tail where there was damage/infection (the bubbles appeared long after the sores on its tail and I had to euthanize this fish) but I haven’t seen the white vesicles inside on either fish and none of the others are showing any symptoms. Wondering if I should continue to keep the entire school quarantined or if there’s a point that I could separate the ones that don’t have bubbles? Should I cull the entire school so as not to risk spreading it in my fishroom? Or could the rest go into a display with other fish if they don’t have symptoms? As of now only one fish has one bubble.
I suspect this is what i have. Time to get back to my doctor asap.
Yes, act a s a p
Awesome
thanks!
❤Thank you !
Gerald I bought your new Book and it is very nice. How much of these symtpoms, causes and solutions can be transferred over to saltwater fish? :)
Thanks for your interesting question! Most of the marine fish diseases are "counter parts" or "look-a-likes" of freshwater fish disease. ICH, Oodinium, Spironucleus, etc...You can find them also in my book on marine aquarium fish diseases, See: www.geraldbassleer.com/book-diseases-in-marine-aquarium-fish

I have lost 5 salwater sharks to mycobacterium, my aquaruim now has no stock but still running to maintain biofilter , does the bacteria live in substrate with out a host ? I am concenered about passing on disease when i decide to get more fish ? thanks in advance if you respond , your vidoes are very helpfull to.
Yes, the bacteria can survive without a host. This is also happening in nature. The bacteria can only become an infection when the fish have lost their immunity or not able to resist...due to different factors! Good maintance of the aquarium and fish could prevent an infection!
@@GeraldBassleer thank you for your fast responce , my maintance was of high standard but i believe i introduced the infection via a recencently aquired shark from another aquarist which in turn infected my livestock , do you think its required to remove all sand, water and rock to avoid passing on infection to new stock?
@@megafishtank1 Interesting! Usually it is the food and weakened fish that caused infection! If you want to do the best= is remove all and start all-over...but be aware...feeding with infected food (or ohter new stuff) can bring back the Mycobacterium (is part of nature)
@@GeraldBassleer thank you
Gerald ,any connection between cynobacteria and mycobacteria other than both bacteria ? any ideas on painfreeways euthanize ways to my last 2 sharks prefer in tank ? thanks Gerald

good good 👍
thanks!!!
Super!
I have never ever in my 30 years of having aquariums been in a Zoo shop in my part of Norway, where the symptoms you describe are not precent. I have had the desease in my aquariums for about all those years as well. I have experiensed long quiet periods with little outbreaks and the oposite. I have had all kinds of fish, also Discus for many years. It`s common in aquarium`s forums to sell or give plants, roots, used equiptments, and other things, I believe this disease is a very very common thing in the aquarium communities around the world. On a micro level, a kind of regulator of overpopulation of a spicies or a comunity tank?? I have never ever been sick by this.
Thanks for your interesting feedback! We have seen Mycobacterium in nature and in aquaria....because it comes originally out of nature (I have seen it in Wild Cardinal Tetra) but the fish only get sick when their immune system collapsed due to many reasons, such as poor water quality, overcrowding, etc. Some fish can live well with a somewhat small infection(?). Same for the fish keeper: you get only infected when you do not take properly care with wounds or poor hygienic matters! Prevention is better than cure!
very interesting
Thank you very much!
I love your channel. Thank you for putting educational material on the internet. ❤🐠🐟
Does enchytraeous introduce diseases too? Does Hikari mysis shrimp carry bacteria? What about Hikari Krill? Thanks.
As studies showed it is frozen or live food that can be risk. See my videos on this matter
@@GeraldBassleer I taught it was only from fozen or live blood worms.
yes. This is what is mostly known but others depend on sources and preparation
@@GeraldBassleer Is thee any way we can kill the bacteria in frozen foods before we offer to the fish? Some say to put in the microwave on high for 15 seconds. Would that be safe? Any other way? Thanks.
@@Alex_Correa Thanks for the question! I know that only good heating & cooking kills the bacteria in the food! This is why granulates are made with heating to provide a food guarantee free of bacteria! A bacterial test (agar plate culture) after 15 seconds microwave should be a good test but I presume it depends on the thickness and quality of the product and Watt-intensity of microwave.
Does it seems likely I could have hexamita caused by the damage done from the red worms. I treated this tank but never actually saw the red worm. It was in my angels in another tank.
Yes, a correct diagnosis helps to find the real cause and to implement the correct treatment!
Thank you for this information.
how do we hire you? I have had guppy wasting for about a year now. I treated Levamisole in water and in food and praziquantel. I hoped it was cured with he last dose but it seems to be persisting. Feeling pretty demotivated and at this point I'm considering shutting down the whole fish room. My fish room has callamanus 6 months ago. I treated everything many times.
Thanks for sharing your efforts to treat! Camallanus, if correctly diagnosed, spreads easily in an aquarium! Treatments must have the exact dosage (certainly not over-dosing what many do!) and also repeated to kill the baby larvae worms! Follow the correct instructions (as in my books explained) and you will be succesfull.
Wow great and thorough video! Thanks so much Dr. Bassleer! I keep a lot of angelfishes so this is very helpful.
Could you make a 5 most common diseases for angelfishes or corydoras like you've done with discus? It's so helpful
Thanks for your interest and the 5 most common diseases of Angelfishes is already made...and soon be published! Stay tuned!
Dear Gerald FYI: Sound is very good with your new headset.
Thanks Stephan
