Review: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
this was filmed in shrewsbury in shropshire uk-just down the road from where i lived as a teenager-scrooge's grave is still there today in the churchyard!..my friend tim and i watched them filming the scene where scrooge walks to fred's house at the end,i remember being impressed by the cameras and all the fake snow,it is still my fave version of a christmas carol!
@@kevinericsongs That had to have been an awesome experience
When I was a kid in the 70's I always looked forward to the Rankin Bass specials. "T'Was the Night Before Christmas" just kind of vanished after around the early 80's and an admin in the Facebook Rankin Bass group shared a link with me and I enjoyed it as much as I did as a kid. "The Little Drummer Boy" desperately needs some restoration work; it's a terrible transfer on Blu Ray. "Rudolph" was my favorite as a kid, but when I got older I became a big fan of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". I think it's clever and love it. I saw "Rudolph's Shiny New Year" when it was first broadcast and remember nothing about it. And I love your outros.
I've only seen the theatrical cut. A friend just sent me the Blu Ray of the Donner Cut and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I saw this only once, theatrically. I remember laughing out loud as Piggy's description of Scrooge: "He's mean...and odious...and poorly dressed." I know it's much loved by many viewers and I need to see it again. Have you seen the 1970 musical with Albert Finney? It's my third favorite. I'm not keen on musicals, but it works for me overall.
My favorite version. Sim plays Scrooge as just not a mean man, but a bitter and resentful man who realizes his errors and now can't do anything about it and takes his resentment out on all people around him. HIs attitude is perfectly presented in his interaction with Cratchit in the Past sequence. He asks Cratchit if he expects "the whole day off tomorrow." Cratchit says yes, if it's convenient. Scrooge responds, "Every year you say the same thing, and every year it's just an inconvenient as the last." It is shot like a horror film and that feels right. So many good character actors, including Hermione Baddely and Patric Macnee. A Guinea, is I think, the equivalent of 1 pound, 1 shilling in the money of the time...quite a lot of cash!
@@joseluisherreralepron9987 Thank you for your post, and yes, the indifference is key to Sim’s portrayal working so well. Someone who just needs to open his eyes to the suffering around him, and the good he could potentially do with his wealth.
Just watching this tonight, believe it or not. I saw the first broadcast in 1984. I was a sophomore in high school and it was real event, much publicized. My second favorite version after the 1951 Sim version. Edward Woodward is the best Ghost of Christmas Present...sarcastic and gives Scrooge no refuge. Warner seems an unlikely Cratchit but plays it beautifully; he seems to respect Scrooge and believe in the good person hiding in there but takes his lumps with a beaten-down yet strong attitude. Angela Pleasence is Donald's daughter, by the way, and she's my favorite Ghost of Christmas Past...snarky and condescending and I love their interactions. Just subscribed, I sense a very good channel here!
@@joseluisherreralepron9987 Thank you, yes, the ghost performances are major factor in making this worthy of being on the Mt Rush pre of Christmas Carol adaptations.
Okay, I'm psyched. Thanks for touching on so many important aspects of the story. Perhaps I've avoided this because George C. Scott looks so entirely unpleasant in the promo still. Simms, as you mentioned, has charm even when he's being nasty. But I'll definitely watch this soon with a more open mind. Thanks again. By the way, Eric Norcross has done some really fine film analyses while being a director of small budget films himself. His podcasts are fun. His "43 Degrees North" was filmed and previewed here (I have connections with Chebeague Island), and he's a warm and caring person who believes in community. I also love his way of telling stories in film. www.youtube.com/@EricNorcross
@@ceciljohn1 Thank you. I’ll admit that Scrooge, as a character in the novella, is depicted as so miserly that he all but emaciates himself, and Scott is anything but seemingly such. His hardline business demeanor is a key winning factor here. I believe that every big fan of A Christmas Carol should watch at least their top 3 versions that cover the most basis for their criteria of what makes the story so powerful.
This version pleased me so much I haven't felt the need to see any others - to my own impoverishment I suppose. You hit on all the reasons I like it, as well as reminding me of a few of its weaknesses. I am now very interested both in going back to watch the Muppet version (I've always loved the first Muppet Movie) and in seeing next week what you chose as number one and why. Good job, KC. Story Telling is indeed a wonderful thing. (I'm a baby boomer, graduated high school in '71)
Thank you. I think it’s an awesome thing that there are so many versions that resonate with so many fans of the story.
What I love about this version of A Christmas Carol is that it is a faithful adaptation of Charles Dicken's story that can be watched by young and old alike. Its not been dumbed down for a younger audience, its costumes are so wonderful (Abby Cox did a video of how much she loved the detail put into the costumes) and its a lovely moral story. Its a great movie, its certainly one of my favourite versions.
It’s a must see for me in the Christmas season. I still need my more serious version to deep dive into Marley’s pain, show Ignorance and Want, and make the future look seriously bleak. But like you said, it still hits the key themes strongly, and works as a less scary way to introduce the story to kids. And I have seen that Abby Cox video about the accuracy of Victorian apparel - very good video.
I think this version is underrated. To my knowledge, it's never mentioned in the same breath as say the Muppet Carol, or the ones with Alastair Sim & George C Scott. This version of A Christmas Carol deserves to be on blu ray after being stuck on the DVD format since the early 2000s.
@@jasonregina13 There’s enough to love about it, that I agree. It’s a new adjustment to watch a Scrooge who’s so cold and bitter, but in a second view, you realize it’s its own strength.
Slay
I have another idea for you make a video about super villainess aka fimale supervillains in the public domain
On comicvine the largest list of Public Domain superheroes still resides
First and foremost, Charles Dickens' version of "A Christmas Carol" wasn't the original. He commercialized and secularized a Spiritualist redemption novella co-authored by an American couple named Mathew Franklin Whittier and Abby Poyen Whittier. I know it sounds crazy, but it makes perfect sense if you have all the evidence (it took me 15 years of research to discover it all).
@@ssake1_IAL_Research I’m intrigued. I’ll have to look into that myself.
This comic trailer looks awesome.

I am interested in knowing about monsters and kaiju from the 50s and 60s that it could be in the public domain. Just let me know.
@@harveywittii9323 I’ve dug quite a bit when it comes to that time frame. 50’s, so far the closest I’ve found have been Robot Monster, Night of the BLOOD BEAST, The PHANTOM from 10,000 Leagues, all who are just a little bigger than human size. The 60’s, at least in terms of movies, you have similar sized ZONTAR: the Thing from Venus, and this video’s REPTILICUS
@ as a kid I loved the monster movies and stuff that would come on every Saturday night and my mom dad and me would watch them have the popcorn and some chips with some dip and our drinks watching as the monsters battle the hero. I sometimes miss those nighttime programs
In my neck of the woods, on TV20, there was Thriller Theater, and that was my introduction to Dr. Phibes, The Creeping Flesh, and I watched a few Godzilla films through them as well. from
@ I will say Dr. Phibes really scared me, but others were fun to watch
I have written down heroes of public domain, and I’ve created a few original characters of my own. it’s going to be an interesting mix of steam punk sci-fi/action adventure superheroes all set in the 19th century
@@harveywittii9323 I love period pieces, and I love to see what comes out of creators’ imaginations with steam punk. Best wishes for your venture there.

Here’s mine! I don’t really know if it’s truly Western because it has lots of other themes. Anyways to sum it up now, it’s just… okay this: *The heroes!* A classic crime fighting outlaw who rides on horseback, a scientist who specializes in physics and also knows navigation, a air force pilot, a middle aged pilot who acts as the “crazy wild dude” trope I rarely see in media, a gang of military veterans. _The Villains!_ A corrupt sheriff, a big company that wants to hyper-industrialize the whole area, an organized group of bad outlaws, some terrorists, cultists… and most of all!!!! *_A giant Eldritch cosmic horror that is so large it takes up half the sky and is hell-bent on consuming the entire planet as it grows through consuming the world!!!_*

tbh captain america 1944 gets wayyy to much hate like the serial is fine
There’s a lot to love in terms of pure action. You just have to watch it with zero expectation of getting much Captain America lore.
Good vid, but the audio is all over the place. When in the room audio is good, but then goes way too loud when speaking over the footage. I found myself attempting to adjust the volume several times only to have to change it again.
Sorry for difficulty. Trying to find the right balance, especially where sound change from what is produced and what RUclips brings from that.
Bra, Vampira clearly appears from a crept and not "no where" and she's filmed on a blacked out set and not location because she's a badass vampire and not a "zombie". She as a vampire could be casting a cloak of darkness around her. In any case it was a clear artist choose of the director and you act like it was some mistake. Gave you a like, thanks for introducing me to this fine film.
Thanks for the like. I see where that angle could be taken, since whatever force may be reanimating the dead might enable that.

Noted
I like adding a disturbing realism to my short Western stories. Like everything feels visceral and genuinely realistic, and the characters are not generally good or even halfway decent people.
What I’ve found is that too many of the fans of the unsavory types completely block out Westerns as “not for them” and not recognize that a preferred character will work in any genre.
