The thing about this song that people don't understand is that it not only refers to Irish independence but also the unification of the people of Ireland irrespective of their sectarian identity. The "nation once again" will be all people together

Here you go, it's an interesting version, taking the lyrics from Thomas Davis' poem "My Land" and adding in the chorus of the Boys of Wexford normally sung. We are the boys of Wexford Who fought with heart and hand To burst in twain the galling chain And free our native land She's not a dull or cold land, No, she's a warm and bold land, Oh, she's a true and old land, This native land of mine. She is a rich and rare land, Oh she's a fresh and fair land; She is a dear and rare land, This native land of mine. We are the boys of Wexford Who fought with heart and hand To burst in twain the galling chain And free our native land Could beauty ever guard her, And virtue still reward her, No foe would cross her border No friend within it pine. Oh, she's a fresh and fair land, Oh, she's a true and rare land; Yes she's a rare and fair land, This native land of mine. We are the boys of Wexford Who fought with heart and hand To burst in twain the galling chain And free our native land

One of the ancestors of my wife, a MacCarthy of Muskerry, also an Irishman in the service of France, charged with his infantry company at Fontenoy in 1745, at about the same time as Clare' s Dragoons, and helped breaking the British line. He went on to become a Colonel and his son was an officer in the French service too, but was guillotined in 1791, and his wife and seven children returned to Ireland.

I’m not the person you asked, but I was curious too so I looked it up. Here’s what I found. Avenging and bright fall the swift sword of Erin On him who the brave sons of Usna betray'd! For every fond eye which he waken'd a tear in A drop from his heart-wounds shall weep o'er her blade. By the red cloud that hung over Conor's dark dwelling, When Ulad's three champions lay sleeping in gore By the billows of war, which so often, high swelling, Have wafted these heroes to victory's shore. We swear to revenge them! - no joy shall be tasted, The harp shall be silent, the maiden unwed, Our halls shall be mute, and our fields shall lie wasted, Till vengeance is wreak'd on the murderer's head. Yes, monarch! though sweet are our home recollections, Though sweet are the tears that from tenderness fall; Though sweet are our friendships, our hopes, our affections, Revenge on a tyrant is sweetest of all! It appears to be based on the ending of one of the ancient bardic tales of Ireland, called “The sorrowful fate of the children of Usna”

High upon the gallows tree swung the noble-hearted three. By the vengeful tyrant stricken in their bloom; But they met him face to face, with the courage of their race, And they went with souls undaunted to their doom. Chorus: "God save Ireland!" said the heroes; "God save Ireland" said they all. Whether on the scaffold high Or the battlefield we die, Oh, what[n 2] matter when for Erin dear we fall! Girt around with cruel foes, still their courage proudly rose, For they thought of hearts that loved them far and near; Of the millions true and brave o'er the ocean's swelling wave, And the friends in holy Ireland ever dear. (Chorus) Climbed they up the rugged stair, rang their voices out in prayer, Then with England's fatal cord around them cast, Close beside the gallows tree kissed like brothers lovingly, True to home and faith and freedom to the last. (Chorus) Never till the latest day shall the memory pass away, Of the gallant lives thus given for our land; But on the cause must go, amidst joy and weal and woe, Till we make our Isle a nation free and grand. (Chorus)

Lyrics: When boyhood's fire was in my blood I read of ancient freemen For Greece and Rome who bravely stood Three hundred men and three men And there I prayed I yet might see Our fetters rent in twain And Ireland, long a province be A nation once again Chorus: A nation once again (x2) And Ireland, long a province be A nation once again And, from that time, through wildest woe. That hope has shone, a far light; Nor could love's brightest summer glow Outshine that solemn starlight. It seemed to watch above my head In forum, field, and fane; Its angel voice sang round my bed, "A Nation Once Again." Chorus: A nation once again (x2) Its angel voice sang round my bed, "A Nation Once Again." It whisper'd too, that freedom's ark And service high and holy Would be prepared by feelings dark And passion vain or lowly For freedom comes from God's right hand And needs a godly train And righteous men must make our land A nation once again Chorus: A nation once again (x2) And righteous men must make our land A nation once again So as I grew from boy to man I bent me to that bidding My spirit of each selfish plan And cruel passion ridding For thus I hoped some day to aid Oh, can such hope be vain When my dear country should be made A nation once again Chorus: A nation once again (x2) When my dear country should be made A nation once again
